This is great, thanks Gary. Because of how I hold my camera, I often merge several images from portrait mode views; this adds another trick!

One caveat is, it helps to have a lens with no or minimal focus breathing.

Never heard of it. And a Google Search for "Alpha Focus Bracketing" didn't turn up anything specific. Do you have a URL?

@@FriedmanArchives Yes, I have the app and is actually very fast. Worth every cent. I tried the manual method and results are very different. The main issue is movement every time you touch the focus ring, this cause many troubles during the focus merging, especially at high magnifications. My camera also doesn't have a shutter cable input. Would be interesting a video comparing both approach.

I was trying out my Sony A7RV with the 70-200 mm G F/4 OSS II lens to give macro photography a try to see if I really enjoy this genre before I make any investments in more macro gears.. I tried focus bracketing and set it as 2 with maximum shots at 70 and the camera keeps shooting till it reaches the maximum 70 shots. I was expecting it to stop shooting before it reaches 70 shots as it would have captured enough focussed images for focus stacking. I also tried testing it by setting it to 3 and then to 4, and also on both occasions, the camera also took up to 70 shots which I knew that for my just a flower image, the shots taken by the camera were far more than were required for focus stacking. Can you please how to resolve this issue? Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Many thanks!

Now you understand why I don't like Sony's focus bracket feature, and why I recommended the technique featured in the video instead. It's the fastest method and no guessing is required. I'm also playing with a new free app which claims to do focus bracketing; it's called "Focus Alpha" which might work for you better. Let me know how you like it!

you take a movie with high frame rate and highest resolution and bit rate, sweep through the focal range, and then you extract frames from that movie. it won't be as crisp as a raw image but might get the job done. Or look into whether high speed burst modes can allow focus changes.

Hi, Not sure where to ask this question but can you focus stack a self portrait? Say you focus on other areas on the landscape, then you jump in the shot with the focus on you. I take my own images and I’m trying to get very charm images of myself and the landscape around me. How can I do that?

Hi, Eva. That's an interesting question! In theory you can; but there are probably other ways that are less labor intensive. Off the top of my head: 1) Take two pictures, one of just you and one of just the background and merge them in photoshop. (Photoshop is getting better at automatically selecting subjects.) 2) Use a wide-to-normal lens and stop it down to about f/11. Wide lenses tend to have greater depth-of-field than telephotos. 3) If full-frame gives you the shallowest depth-of-field for the same f/stop setting, then a smaller sensor will help with your goal of getting everything in focus. So use a wide angle coupled with an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds camera body (or your smartphone, if you're not going to be making giant enlargements and pixel peeping).
