Focusing Through a Lens of Hope After Decades of Depression and Attempting Suicide 

NAMI Montgomery County MD volunteer, Shannon Heath Parkin M.S., will share how she recovered from decades of depression and a disabling suicide attempt in 2015. She will describe how during her six month hospitalization, doctors found the right combination of anti-depressants that worked best for her, and she learned to walk again on partial feet which had been amputated after her suicide attempt. The presentation will include how her recreational therapist encouraged her to return to activities she had enjoyed when she was younger as she gained confidence. Shannon will describe how her faith community supported her. She will share how telling her recovery story and facilitating support groups through NAMI enables her to live fully.
