Everything you want to know about the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (3rd Gen) audio interface. We'll cover the features, setup, register, Focusrite Control, recording, and loopback for streaming or recording DAW/plugin videos.
#Focusrite
Everything you need to know is covered in this single video. Use the Chapters to navigate to different sections.
The Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Generation 3 is an incredible audio interface.
It has 4 great mic pre-amps with 56dB of gain
2 independent headphone outputs
4 Line inputs
4 Line outputs to connect two sets of studio monitors or to route audio out to external audio gear (compressor, eq, etc...)
Speaker Switching
S/PDIF
ADAT
Loopback
and way more.
With the included Focusrite Control you can route audio and setup different mixes for each output.
So, you could have a DAW control room mix for your speakers, a different mix with the Direct Monitor for a singer using headphone 1, and a different mix for a guitar player using headphone 2.
With Loopback you can record computer audio, like a video w/audio playing in a browser, and record that into your DAW.
Or, send your DAW audio out (even ASIO audio) into OBS, Streamlabs, Zoom, Skype, etc... and live stream with your DAW and plugins, and/or record a DAW or plugin tutorial/demo video for RU-vid.
The Loopback implementation is probably the best I have used.
Other features include AIR for each of the 4 front inputs. AIR models the frequency response of the classic Focusrite ISA preamps. AIR adds clarity and detail to the top end and works GREAT with the Shure SM7B, which tends to be a 'warm' sounding mic. Of course it works well for other mics, and even guitar or bass.
Speaker Switching lets you switch between two pairs of studio monitors (access in Focusrite Control)
Change the color of your Gain Halos.
Turn on Phantom Power in pairs.
Add 8 more inputs using the Optical ADAT Input - great for adding an external mic pre-amp.
S/PDIF input & output for digital gear like guitar processors, vocal processors, FX units, etc...
All of this, and more, will be covered in this single video.
The Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 is an 18in /8out audio interface (those numbers include ADAT and SPDIF)
There are 8 analog inputs on the 18i8 - ADAT adds 8 inputs, SPDIF adds 2 inputs (full total: 18)
There are 4 analog outputs, 2 headphone outputs, and SPDIF adds 2 more outputs (full total: 8)
In this video we are using Windows 10, Pro Tools, Studio One, OBS Studio, and Streamlabs OBS.
The 18i8 and Focusrite Control is also compatible with Mac/OSX and other DAWs (Reaper, Cubase, FL Studio, Logic, etc...)
Focusrite Control is also compatible with iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch)

Completely agree. Amazing tutorial. Covers everything, straight to the point and easy to understand. Ironically, talking to Focusrite support, they advised to use virtual audio cable to run audio from the DAW to OBS when using plugins in real time. They should know their equipment better than anyone. Not that i´m complaining because so far, support from them has always been top notch but i find it ironic.

I just purchased a Focusrite interface, and I was doing my homework on the setup. Prior this this, I've watched 3 other videos, and as others have said, you are far and away the best. I completely understand Focusrite Control, and I definitely could not say that from watching the other videos. Nice work. I appreciate the time you spent producing this excellent tutorial.

Several things struck me about this video: The clarity and comprehension of the demo - so thorough, so well done The amount of thought that Focusrite put into the little details, that make all the difference The well-written, well-designed software and installation The amazing support from Focusrite By far the best infomercial-style video I've ever seen. Focusrite should pay you for this. I now NEED a Focusrite Scarlet 18i8 (in your voice - no other way to say it now!) Nice job!

Dear Benoni Studio - This is the best instructional video I've ever seen for anything! I never even knew what "loopback" meant! I've used y-splitters to send sound out of my computer and back into my DAW to record sound played by my computer - what a hassle! I just recorded a section of this video with loopback! Wow! I think I've learned 200 things here! More. I've suffered every way imaginable as a self-taught songwriter / musician / recording person. Computer freezes & crashes. Pops & clicks. Lack of awareness of features like availability of keyboards in the DAW! Lost iLocks. Not able to get Pro Tools help. Not knowing anyone who could help me. Not knowing how to take advantage of audio interfaces (M-series). Not 'getting' dither until I read ten different articles about it - eureka! Obsolescence of operating systems, PCs, Laptops, audio interfaces. Not understanding MIDI. Basically I've lived in a state of confusion over how to use many, many Pro Tools features. Now I give myself a 7. I'm not a pro. I want to understand mastering better. I think my lack of mastering knowledge prevents my recordings sounding as good as Steel Dan or Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening". ANYWHOO THANK YOU SO MUCH! I just got the Focusrite 18i8. What I've learned in these 54 minutes would have taken me weeks or months to figure out, or I never would have got it without this video!

Extremely clear and concise as many others say. I've listened many people arguing that the Scarletts cannot move high impedance headphone. I am thinking getting the 8i6, because I need to record kemper via Spdif and also would like 2 separate headphones outputs (and good mic preamps?). Do you know if the 8i6, which I guess is virtually identical to the 18i8 in this aspect, is suitable for the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250? I don't need to burn my brain and ears with extreme volume. I just need very sufficient power in every possible situation. Thank you and congrats for the video.

Incredibly detailed and informative, with real-world examples. Must say, I'm sold on this interface. I mostly use Reaper as my main DAW for bass and synth re-amping so the additional outputs and custom audio routing is a bonus, like the SPDIF and ADAT. BTW I've just switched to MacOS on an M1 MacBook Pro so I'm hoping there's no compatibility issues now. Only downside I can see is having the Focusrite control software open to change some basic front panel settings like the Mic/Inst and Pad controls. Much rather they were discrete switches on the hardware. Other than that (and it's a minor gripe TBH), a well-thought-out interface.
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 2 года назад
Yeah it's a great desktop interface with lots of options and it sounds great. Just keep in mind that on Mac Loopback works a bit different than on Windows. If you want to send DAW audio into something like OBS you will need an additional app like Blackhole or Rogue Ameoba Loopback.

Excellent video. I found one brand new for under 600 AUD which is about 400 USD, way under retail price.....I think I will just buy it and be done. I was going to get the Steinberg UR44C because of the included DSP effects on the inputs, but the 2 extra analog ins of the Scarlett is what tipped the balance for me. Yes I could get a much bigger Steinberg, or PreSonus or Focusrite, with as many ins as I would need, but the point is to keep this small as this is for my bedroom with just a few small synths like my Electribe and the like. If I ever want to expand I do already have Adat A/D interfaces in my studio room, but I don't want to start going too crazy in my bedroom lol. The thing is, at least the option is there, with a similarly compact interface, unlike the UR44C.

This is a very useful tutorial, One thing I'm wondering about (as a newbie): if there is latency between the DAW output and the 'no-latency' 18i8 headphone monitor, how do we overdub over an existing DAW track? Won't there be latency from the DAW to the phones, and another latency from the mic/instrument to the DAW?

Yeah buddy. Most of what is in this video also applies to the other Scarlett Gen 3 interfaces. Especially the part about exposing your inputs/outputs to Windows. The 18i20 is a nice interface too with actual buttons for Speaker Switching, Dim, Mute, Inst, and Pad, plus more routing options. And the Focusrite drivers have been rock solid for me, and the Loopback feature is so well implemented. I was very impressed with the 18i8, especially being under $500.

Lots of good info. My current (older) interface doesn't have software other than the daw. I do see value in setting up monitor mixes and possibly direct monitoring of individual inputs, but other than that what advantages are there for using software outside of the daw (where you can already monitor both wet and dry recordings)?

Something like an 8i6 will function about the same as the 18i8, just less I/O. But if you think you will need 3+ mic inputs/pre-amps at some point, you may just want to grab the 18i8. If you are CERTAIN you will never need more than 2 mic inputs at one time, then an 8i6 would be fine maybe even the 4i4. If you go with something even lower, like the 2i2, you won't have all the features shown here - things like loopback for example.

Superb review, great job. So the optical port can be switched from ADAT to S/PDIF, but does that mean the RCA S/PDIF port is then disabled, or can you have two S/PDIF inputs going at the same time? It doesn't look like it from the settings you demonstrated, but I just wanted to confirm. Also, for the rear line inputs, is there any way to switch them between "consumer" -10dBV and "pro" +4dBu line level standards? From what I read, the 18i8 uses +4dBu by default, but I can find no mention of whether it has any provision for -10dBV. Some Tascam mixers have physical switches for this and I was hoping the Scarlett might have it as a software option but I didn't see it anywhere in your video.

I'm making a podcast with three people (will require three microphones). Could i buy a Scarlett 2i2 and then do a XLR splitter on one of the inputs or would i need to do this 18i8? The 4i4 just have two XLR inputs so that would have the same problem as the 2i2 for my purpouse? So main question? Would this 18i8 work on my iPad and would the iPad register 3 or 4 inputs?

The DAW that comes with the Focusrites (Pro Tools First) is garbage IMO. You can only do basic editing in PT First and PT First is FREE to anyone anyway my.avid.com/get/pro-tools-first Mind you, I am talking about PT First, NOT the full version of Pro Tools which is great. I think you also get Ableton Live Lite, but I never use Ableton since it's not a standard DAW and is really made for electronic music. The Presonus probably comes with Studio One Artist and that is pretty good, much better than PT First. But it is a LITE version of the full Studio One Pro, which is also great. Keep in mind, you can use ANY DAW with either interface. You can get PT First for free, and Studio One Artist is only $99 and will work with any interface. You can record the same number of tracks (simultaneous) with either, they both have 8 analogue inputs plus SPDIF and ADAT. You can record as many tracks as you want in your DAW one at a time. The 18i8 Gen3 is a bit newer than the C series Presonus units. I have a PreSonus 1824c btw. I think Focusrite has better controller software. Focusrite Control is a bit easier to use vs. Universal Control, but they both work. If you want Loopback and use Mac, then get the Scarlett. Presonus only has Loopback for Windows. The PreSonus is nice because it has meters on the front and slightly more powerful pre amps. The Scarlett is nice because the drivers are better, Loopback is stable, Focusrite Control is easy to use, the AIR feature is useful for some mics like the SM7B, the gain halos look cool (although not as useful as segmented meters) Either one would be great. I would pick the Scarlett 18i8, but that's because I use Loopback all the time to make videos and it's more stable than the loopback with my Presonus 1824c (you can get drop outs from time to time) But the 1824c works fine for recording if I need more simultaneous inputs. Studio One Artist is a much better DAW than PT First, but it's still a LITE version. The plugins included with either are fine, but you can purchase much better plugin - I wouldn't base my decision off of included software - you can always buy better stuff later. But if you go with the Focusrite you'll keep getting free plugins every 2-3 months. You can also buy any DAW you want, or subscribe to PreSonus Sphere or the full version of Pro Tools. If this is your first interface just choose the color you like best. Once you are more familiar with what you need and how interfaces work you can get the other one if needed. If you don't have the extra money to buy a DAW on top of the interface, then go with the Presonus. Pro Tools FIRST is horrendous and so limited you will not be happy.

@@BenoniStudio Thanks for your quick informative response. This will be my first interface. I was leaning towards the PreSonus because of the physical buttons. I also found out that the 1810c boost the mic levels 80 dB on the mic settings and 40 dB on the line setting. However, the power boost for the microphone affects all 4 inputs on the PreSonus where the Focusrite affects the inputs in pairs. The latter is more important to me. So I'll be getting the Focusrite. Thanks!

Hello, how would you connect the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 with the Soundcraft Signature 22MTK (mixer), the BOSS RC-505mkii LoopStation, The Roland VT-4 Voice Transformer, the Axiom49 MIDI Controller Keyboard, an electric guitar, and a microphone? And the softwares: Logic Pro X, Mainstage, Komplete 13. And can I use my guitar tube amp as an output or do I need to buy speakers?

I’m having a feedback issue, when I insert more then one hardware on a track I will get a double. I then would go to Focusrite control to turn fader down which allows me to hear nothing on that channel. I’ve tried muting also still nothing. All my inputs and out puts matches with Protools. My connections is correct, I’m using balanced cables. Focusrite control line outputs matches playback inputs. I’m using Focusrite clarett 8pre all connections is used.

I just ordered a Focusrite 18i20. Does it do everything the 18i8 does? Does it have the same user interface? It better!

Great video. Can you record through the all four XLR inputs at the same time? e.g. recording a live drummer. Thank you.

Yes. And if needed, you can add an external mic preamp through the Optical Input and add another 8 inputs.
