Fodder Trial Run (barley growth cycle)

I bought barley seeds at the local feed store in order to grow fodder (feed for farm animals). The barley seeds germinate to become barley sprouts. This is a ten day documentation of the growth cycle. This was an experimental/trial run to see if it would grow and if the farm animals would eat it.
Fodder in 10 days.

The fodder starts will grow quicker in the first 2 days if you use a tray to cover the trays to help keep the heat in!

Good for your animals! With no green pastures on a daily basis, that fodder has got to be welcome! Glad to see how much you put in a tray... I am getting ready to start my first large tray and I would not have used near as much seed as I needed to. Growing here for indoor cats.

Suggestion...once you rinse the first time..fill the jar with water again...next day rinse well and drain all the water...put the seed on trays and cover with wet towel or newspaper...next day see if the towel/paper needs to be sprayed with water...the next day remove the towel/paper if you see green shoots coming out...then just water as needed and let nature continue...by 7th day all be ready for eating.

Once my chickens tasted the sweetness of the fodder they went nuts for it. It took a little while though.
@David_636

Sounds great. But I'm pretty sure birds don't have a sense of taste. They have very very low numbers of tastebuds. It's why chillies evolved to be spicy, because birds can't taste it and will spread the seeds.

Normally fodder will grow in 7 days. When you are letting it soak don't cover it. Let it have the sunlight. In day 7-10 it shot up. Try experimenting with more light in earlier days aswell it will make it grow faster and more lush sooner

@@FarmerG also when you finally get down what your doing. Set up like shelf with pvc or mini green house shelf. And stack them newest to oldest going down with a bucket underneath. To catch water. Wow, I don't get it that you did not get mold because you had no holes in the bottom of your trays or did you ? Your explanations are not clear. I've done mine with oats and I used sprouting trays, it's the only time I had success with it. It was good because I could wash the bottom pan and spray it with little javex and water on the bottom. This was the only way I could see my sprout come up without mold. I live in Canada and we heat our house with a wood stove and the seeds sprout in the house.

@todspeerii7498
@todspeerii7498 5 лет назад
Yes he probably used bleach to destroy any mold spores. I work in a biochem lab and I understand bleach very well. It's the polar opposite of acid for it's very basic. This high pH kills bacteria, cells and mold spores DNA very well, that's why we use it to clean the qPCR machine. After a small amount of bleach is added for a while, it's rinsed out with water. Bleach can be diluted very very easily like acid and after rinsing none will be left. This isn't a harmful chemical that "sticks around" for a long time and will not affect the plants, animals or the growing process other than destroying mold from growing (common issue with fodder). Other than that nothing is used especially if it's indoors. You don't have to worry about pests so if you use organic seed and you feed the animals this, it will stay organic and chemical/pesticide free obviously.

Fodder...sprouted grains...seemed like a great idea for me 3 years ago to keep feed costs down for my pigs. WRONG...I damn near killed my pigs. Contrary to popular opinion fodder has little nutrition, and here is why: Look on a bag of barley (or other grain of your choice) and see what the protein value is. It is probably around 15-18%, correct? And that should be plenty high, right? Right...BUT...That is for the dry barley seed. When you sprout and grow fodder the protein value of the fodder is only in the dry matter, while the weight of the fodder is about 90% water, so 10 pounds of fodder is only 1.5 to 1.8% protein, and THAT will kill an animal. Its a great idea, but it doesn't work. I wish it did...I'd love to cut my feed bill by well over 50%.
@FarmerG
@FarmerG 6 лет назад
Mountain Crest Farm It’s been a long while since I did fodder but I want to get into it pretty heavy once I finish my greenhouse. I will look deeper into the protein content like you mentioned here. Thanks for the heads up. 👍
@MountainCrestFarm
@MountainCrestFarm 6 лет назад
Sprout a tray to about 6 inches then take it to your local extension office and ask that it be analyzed for nutrients. You'll see in the analysis that animals would have to eat near their weight DAILY in sprouted grains to get the proper nutrition...And that's not even taking into account the lack of vitamins and minerals livestock needs.
