I ordered the foil quill two days ago and was going to go out to buy some deco foil (Just cause I used to use an iron to foil it on my laser printed paper and I loved the results of that) thinking it might work with the quill. Saira Chohan - I'm so glad that the video was helpful for you. It's too bad that the Deco Foil isn't a good match for the Foil Quill, but I love it for laser foiling!
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. Your results are consistent with my results using the same three heat foil products with my Maker. For some reason I can't get good foiling with the Gemini brand, but the WRMK and Glimmer work great. Interestingly, the Gemini foil works perfectly with my Scan N Cut DX. It's very odd.
swatts1195 - Thanks for sharing! It's good to hear that there's consistency with at least some of the foil brands between the Silhouette and Cricut machines. Just a guess, but the inconsistencies between machines may have to do with technical default settings that vary from machine manufacturer to manufacturer, something like that?
*PLEASE NOTE* : After I recorded this video, I learned that many Foil Quill users are getting great results with much lower speed and pressure settings ( generally in the 3 to 5 range for both) than the default material settings that I've been starting with, so be sure to experiement to see which settings work best for you. Maria's Creations - I thought that the Foil Quill worked with any Cricut machine that has pen holder attachment, and I have seen examples of it being used with the Explore Air 2, so I wonder what might be happening? Unfortunately, I only have a Maker so I'm not able to test it out. Did the C adapter come in your Foil Quill package? That's the adapter that fits Cricut machines.
@@mariascreations9783 Hi, I know it's been a while but I don't know if you could fix it. I have the cricut explore air 2 and the foill quill works perfectly, youjust need to use the Cricut adapter that comes with the set. There's plenty of videos on youtube on how to make it work. I hope you've figured it out!!
Wow, what an exhaustive battery of tests. Wonderful! I agree, the first three you tested produced the best results, though the Gemini required a little more programming "manipulation" to get there, whereas the other two made it with default settings. The "spotty" look (to varying degrees) in the filled pattern definitely works better with non-foil colors, as it creates the illusion of hand-coloring. For foil, unfortunately, that wouldn't as desirable an effect.
Keith - Yes, the results with the heat transfer foils were definitely the best of the bunch, but I was glad that it worked with the Minc foil, too. Lots of foil options with the Foil Quill!
Just letting you know that we on the Silhouette Foil Quill Facebook Group have found that a Force range between 1 and 7 is best and a Speed at about 3 works great. High force dulls the foil. Keep in mind the Foil Quill is not meant to "emboss/deboss".
Brige S. - Thanks for sharing! Have you been able to get better results with the Deco Foil using these settings, or is it just a no go for the Foil Quill? I'll have to try changing up the settings to see if I can get better results with some of the foils that were spotty and weathered looking.
@@kdotbecca - Toner related foil (Minc/Deco/GinaK) will work on vinyl with the Foil Quill and really does not work with cardstock. I am surprised the Minc foil worked for you but I know it can be a hit or miss with the Minc foil and the Foil Quill (FQ). The pressure may have played a part in it working for you. You are welcome to join our group as you like. I have been sharing your video links with the group. Also, know that people have been finding cracks in the collar around the heating nib and there is no evidence that a high force is doing it but many are concerned that it may play into it. Some of the cracks go all the way up to the top of the FQ where the nib is snapped into the collar of the FQ in the factory. Some cracks have shown up after use and some have arrived already cracked before use. The whole point is the FQ will work great at lower force between 1-7 and a speed of between 3 to 10.
@@kdotbecca - Try less force with the spotty foils that are heat activated (hot foils). You could be causing them to actually "rub away" with the extra force. Less Force is more with the Foil Quill & Silhouette Cutters. The "weathered" look could also be from the High Force, it dulls the foils. Search FB for Foil Quill Silhouette to find our group.
Brige S. - Thanks so much for sharing all of this information. I'll be on the lookout for cracks in the collar around the heating nib. So far, I haven't noticed anything. Using lower force to get better results honestly hadn't crossed my mind since I was coming at it from the point of view that the Foil Quill behaved as a sketch pen for foiling, so I started with the default sketch settings and went from there. So, this is all good to know, and I'll have to try lowering the settings and doing further testing. I'll look for the group that you mentioned next time I'm on Facebook - thanks!
Glennis - Glad that the video was helpful for you! Just a heads up - my results with the Minc foil and the *standard tip* Foil Quill weren't nearly as good (video coming next week with those results), so if that's the tip you have then you might have trouble getting good results.
