Fokker DR.1 Triplane - Grimes Field, Golden Age of Aviation Museum

A beautiful full scale replica of the Fokker DR.1 Triplane built by volunteers from the Golden Age of Aviation Museum in Bethel, PA. This aircraft features an actual LaRhone rotary engine and many other details taken from the original design. I love the smell of the castor oil from the total loss oil system as the plane taxi's by. Paint scheme is that of Lothar von Richthofen, the brother of Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron).

It's very impressive especially with the LaRhone rotary engine in it. Talk about authentic. Great job guys.

GREAT video!!! It takes a BRAVE person to test fly one of these for the first time. Hats off to the pilot! 👍🏼 It looked like he lost his hat at 8:20.

I've known a few pilots who flew the DR1 and the said it's NOT a pilot friendly plane! Very unstable. Killed a lot of novice pilots.

In 1966 when I was in 5th grade, my entry into the school science fair was about the history of Manfred Von Richthofen. Included was a model of his sleek Albatross along with it's flying capabilities. I was inspired by my dad who was a U.S.A.A.F. pilot and from watching Snoopy tangle with the Red Baron in the comic strips. I later came to appreciate DR1 even more. Everything about it is odd and unconventional. That's the beauty of it. I've watched this video over and over and marvel at the vintage pictures. A flying DR1 is surreal to me. I see past the original intent of these machines of war and gaze in wonder of the pilots, engineers and the raw, sheer beauty of these creations.

He doesn't... really.... there are cutouts inboard on the center wing. The wing skin doesn't come all the way to the fuse. allowing a little bit of sight. Other than that, the pilot does s-turns to see where he is, exactly. During the war, there were ground crews that helped a lot. At the end of the day, those pilots were highly skilled and literally flew by the seat of their panths. Pretty incredible aviators. Those engines were a major pain in the ass. The torque was crazy and bad craftsmanship plagued the DR-1's The Germans readily exchanged the German Oberussel for the French LeRone engines every chance they got. They were more dependable and higher HP.

@joeblo4306
@joeblo4306 5 лет назад
Rotary engines are actually quite powerful. They run very smoothly and they have very high torque. The leRhone 9j is a 900 cui engine the reason it has a low horsepower is because of the low rpm (1400) and that’s why they all have massive propellers

These planes were designed to kill people. They are weapons plain and simple and yet there is something almost toy-like, kind of comical about their appearance. The bright colors add to that impression. And.. another yet, they are still awesome. Beautiful plane. Well done. I love it.

How many LaRhone rotaries are still available? I've only seen one in an airplane Paul Mantz flew at an air show decades ago. I'll never forget the castor oil smell and the stuff that blew back toward the tail. Thank goodness for the cowling that kept it blowing along the bottom and not in the pilots face.

I would imagine film crews would kill to have a period-accurate, fully functional WWI aircraft available; perhaps the Golden Age museum could rent out aircraft for use in feature films and documentaries as an additional source of income? Heck, even demonstration flights at airshows might be viable. And it would give them greater capacity to preserve original war birds and/or construct new ones. =)

I just purchased a mostly-completed DR1 project (rigged to fly, with tailwheel, looks like it might have been pranged and restored for static display) from the Commemorative Air Force in Tulsa. Don't know much about the build but it's a replica of 425/17 and it needs struts, a top wing and a powerplant. I'd love to find a non-flightworthy motor to put on it for static display at the local WWI hangar air museum. Do you happen to know a good source for such a thing, and what a ballpark fair price might be? Cheers, and congrats on a beautiful aircraft! What is she like to fly?

There are tons of fights on youtube about which fighter is the best or greatest. The Fokker DR.1 was not the best performing fighter ever, even in it's time. If I could own a fighter plane though, to just fly, it would be the DR.1. It might not have been the best plane, but it was and still is the COOLEST plane that ever flew! It just looks awesome.
