I made these foldable V-Flats for only $20 each!! It is super simple and takes only 15-20 minutes. Hope this saves you all some money!! instagram: / bobbiebrown.photography facebook: / bobbiebrownphotography
Just started this project today and ran out of tape on the 3rd panel - but more tape is coming tomorrow! Thanks again for this, and your sweatshirt is great :)
Thank you for sharing the video in the Felix group! This is an absolutely genius method of making cheap, transportable v-flats. I'm going to see if I can manage to paint one side black. :) Thanks again!
Did these as well.. But I took 77 adhesive and but the same size foam board together to make black on one side and white on the other.. After about 30 mins I did the taping will gaffers...
I tried making a foldable V-Flat out of white foam board and it didn't really work for me the way I wanted. The problem was that the foam board was too translucent and the light actually lit up the foam board and made it like a giant white light source rather than a flag. I really wanted both sides to be white as I was using it for high key photography. Did you run into any of that with your white ones? I think if I do it again I will either get thicker board, or paint it white.
How do they hold up as far as standing? I was thinking of either creating a brace like stand or even doubling the foam for each panel and doing the steps you’ve shown here to thicken the support of the v flat. Thoughts?
Great video but far beyond $20 each. The boards alone cost about $11 each now add Gaffers tape $30+ for two rolls, Velcro a few more bucks. About $100 for what she built was the cheapest I could find. If you want to make them double sided like "RobZimiga" commented. Double the cost for one so $200. So it's really not cheaper than buying them off Amazon. Unless you can find the black one side and white the other foam core, which I have not been able to locate anywhere locally yet. If you can get a 25% coupon for Michaels or maybe find a better deal some where you might save some money, if not it's better to just order them off amazon, if you want double sided.
Hi NicoSimonPrincely, Depending on where and what you purchase will determine your price. I purchased each board for $4-ish which was 40% off @Hobbylobby and ordered the gaffer tape off of Amazon for $17 a roll. I did not use a whole roll on a v-flat so I estimated the price from what I used. The velcor was $2. So the price was right around $20 per v-flat, much cheaper than you could buy them.
There is one difference, in particular. The V-Flat World v-flats are made from 1/2" thick foam core vs. the 3/16" thick foam core you, typically, find at Hobby Lobby. They should be sturdier and should hold up longer. It's much harder to find 1/2" thick foam core outside of art supply stores and it costs a lot more. The local Jerry's Artarama has 32" x 40" x 1/2" white foam core on sale for $7.99 a sheet. The black 32" x 40" x 1/2" sheets are $9.99 on sale.
