Other than Fireball XL5, this programme UFO was my next favourite of all Gerry Andersons amazing programmes he and his partners made. The sound of that UFO still make my spine tingle, I'm 65yrs now and still love to watch all his creations - just fabulous memories, thank you Gerry 😊
UFO like most of the Anderson productions still look fresh and modern. A tribute to the creative genius of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.Thankyou for a life time of memories. .
People seem to always forget SID and the vital role he played in detecting UFOs. I am sure without SID we would all be wearing red space suits and breathing night nurse in our space helmets... let’s hear it for SID👍👏
Lee Britnell I agree! Add the sound of Thunderbird 2’s boosters, the sound of a T.I.E. fighter’s ion engines and the sound of Airwolf’s engines to the list and I’m in heaven!
I can still do a very passable impression of the sound of a 'youfow'... korrr'rwhackh, korrr'wackh, Korrrr'wackh... . Such a eeeeeery sound that once heard, haunts one forever. . Of course, we didn't realise until 1978 that; in space, no-one can hear you scream...
Those Purple Wigs 💜 As a kid I had a cassette player and recorded the open theme on it. Loved this show as a Kid, it was magical. UFO stands the test of time, even today the show looks futuristic of sorts. Those Outfits!
Guess main reaso for the wigs was those were fashionable back then. In those days my mother even had two of those in blond - and don´t forget JAMES BOND-DIAMONSD FEVER done at this aera - also with female wighs
Gerry Anderson's production values were always high - he could world build really well - I remember this scene vividly. BTW the Space probe looks like it was based on the US lunar orbiters.
@@Howyaduing Knowing the BBC it would have been about the same. . . they were pulling as much funding as possible for their flagship CoronationStreet. There is something kitsch about seeing Tom Baker running down the same corridor seven times.
British film and television productions have always excelled at using sound effects and instrumental soundtracks to enhance the visuals occurring on screen. The timing and nature of evocative "incidental music" is critical for eliciting an emotional stake in the story. So too is silence. Within just this segment, there are many examples of how this is done effectively.
The only time in the whole series that a UFO turned around and went back home. How lucky for the tracking team. Even without details of the planet they should know exactly where it is located and there is at least some kind of repair facility there you would think. Not a complete failure at all. Love the show❤.
UFO, Space 1999 weren't produced or broadcast by the BBC. It was an ATV (Associated TeleVision) production, broadcast on ITV - Independant TeleVision. . Dr Who was the only BBC production.
I had one of the fighters when I was a kid. It was made by Dinky toys and it was Green. Of course I lost the torpedo. I also had two Eagles from Space 1999.
So many wonders and emotions! This TV series accompanied my childhood, even though it was broadcast incomplete in Italy at the time. It was only in the 1990s that I was able to see it again in colour and in its entirety. In some respects it looks a bit dated, but certain technologies are still beyond our reach. The sense of wonder remains as intact today as it did then. My personal nickname is an obvious homage to my favourite character. Thanks to Gerry Anderson for making us dream. UFO, Space 1999 and, of course, Dr. Who: unforgettable, inimitable, unsurpassed! 🙀 😻👍👍👍👍
Ok, so the scale is shot on the photos, but you know where the alien world is, or at least one of their bases. Next step is a manned expedition, heavily armed.
Must of have been a bit confusing having The Purple Gang together. Gabrrielle Drake was LieuTenant Gaye Ellis. Lt Joan Harrington was played by Antonia Ellis.
It makes me wonder to what extend this was informed by the battle for Britain in WW2. Like the 2D map of the trajectories of UFO and interceptors, and the communication between the base and the pilots
No need to guess... I believe there is an interview with Gerry Anderson (or Sylvia) that explains the influence of the BoB 'Home Chain' defense system set up by ACM Hugh Dowding, on the scripting of UFO.
I always thought the Interceptors were pretty lame. Armed with a baddass missile but only one! That aside I loved UFO! It was always on late at night which meant I had to plead with my parents to allow me to stay up late to watch it. The sets, the vehicles, Mobiles, Skyone, Strakers gas turbine car, the music...but best of all was Gabrielle Drake as Lt. Ellis, surely every 70's schoolboy fantasy in silver PVC, lurex and a purple wig with that killer body...Phew!
The UFO's were travelling so much faster than the Interceptors, it was somewhat like a WW1 biplane trying to intercept a fighter going supersonic. But the Interceptors would use 3x nuclear missiles to try triangulate on at least one of the UFOs, if there were three of them. The nuclear explosions would make an electromagnetic pulse and put out very fast moving radioactive shrapnel debris - because there is virtually no shockwave in a vacuum.
From the episode "Close Up," written by Tony Barwick, who also wrote "Shadow of Fear," an episode of the Supermarionation series Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons. The Scarlet episode runs for only 20-odd minutes. Compare the two.
Used to watch this on Channel 27 , Worcester, Ma back in the day. Liked it so much, I bought the DVD bix set, before the price got crazy. Still watch it today. Get show. Love Gerry Anderson's work.
Lt. Ellis..(Gabrielle Drake) was my very first crush as a young boy...Wow what a beauty !! Her late brother also became a musical hero of mine Nick Drake.
I never understood how that UFO could NOT see this device following it back home and Not alerting their defense systems to have it blown to pieces once it entered it's defense perimeter.
I’ve seen episode many time’s!And,yes,it uses the;Journey to the far side of the Sun 🌞 music by;Barry Gray!I can’t believe, that Ufo is fourty eight year’s old!
And,opp’s!I meant to say;I’ve seen this episode many time’s!(of Ufo).Yeah, here’s come’s my 4th Grade memory, again!I saw this particular episode after 3:30 p.m.after school ended. It was probably,in the spring that I saw this! It’s a classic! But,so,is;Journey to the far side of the 🌞 Sun!
You know the series sir. How often would Sci-Fi depict a multi-billion dollar failure in 1969. The story lines in this series were light years ahead of anything being broadcast at the time. Tragically only 26 episodes were made. Happy Good Friday Mr. Baird.
I'm wondering if the aliens didn't mess up that satelite somehow. With their level of technology they surely would have spotted that satelite, and the fact that they didn't blow it up seemed pretty odd. One blast from that ufo and that thing would have been scrap metal.
I remember when this episode aired and I wondered how the probe could catch up to a UFO travelling at SOL 5, which I figured was 5 times lightspeed, with just a little chemical rocket.
Thats funny, Friedland D814 (ex electrician) that was the first thing I spotted too, though I didn't notice them back in the day! I think they must have had a box of those lying around or it would seem like an odd set-design choice: "You know the cockpit"? Yes... "You know what would look good behind the pilots head.... 36 doorbell pushes"! 🏆🚀
Exactly. I first saw this episode when I was 10 and I thought the same thing "send another one". I liked and still like this show, mostly for its groovy 1960's vision of the future, but it had plot holes big enough to fly Sky Diver through.
Commander Straker gave Gail full control of the sheparding of the ufo towards the orbit of the probe. As soon as he said this he walked straight over to the blokes who then coordinated the whole operation!
Gabrielle Drake we shared many of my young teen fantasies. She played in some risque films in the 70's and was not adverse to showing that sexy body off, minge and all. I always thought that purple wig suited her. She auditioned for the part of Jo Grant in Doctor Who but lost out to Katy Manning.
In the distant future of 1980 it's a trip that nobody could have fathomed that we would be able to watch the world in the palm of our hands. And IT WOULD BE THOUSANDS OF S.I.D.S. and not just one.
It's amusing how they thought ANY of this stuff could be accomplished by 1980. Here we are 42 years after and STILL not possible. MOST sci-fi shows underestimate the time needed for technology to be developed. Did they ever explain why the moon women all had purple hair?
I don’t think I’ve ever noticed before how much extra height those purple wigs give them, now I’m wondering if that’s a deliberate style choice, or just that the actresses in question had long hair tied up under the wig?
It seems to vary. Possibly the worst example I've seen was Maureen Tann's character: www.shadolibrary.org/ops/aaper2.shtml I think the wigs look hot, but not when they're teetering on top of an already large 'do. :-)
Hello. This is Bo and Peep of Heavens Gate. We have been toodling along behind Comet Hale Bopp and we are looking for a new comet to ride. *Flying saucer sounds*
@@dogwalker666 I grew up in Los Angeles in the 70's and 80's. I watched everything on every channel, but I'm seeing this for the first time as well. We got some Dr. Who, and Space 1999, but no UFO.
