My God, she was beautiful and such presence! I'm so glad we have her on film; One of the greatest stars, ever.

Say what you want about this lady but she was a friggin pro in everything she did.

She actually sounds like she has a good singing voice, She just needs more confidence. I can tell she is holding back because she is to afraid of messing up a note or sounding bad.

omg I just love the bit where she says "And stop laughing at me" -- she sounds so genuine and nice... Can I detect a Southern accent? I laughed out loud bigtime at the end when she murmers "Oh God!"

Those days it was about perfection not realism

Why she was dubbed who knows. She was a solid singer and even made recordings, including a few classical pieces. It was her hobby and a hobby she loved. She was good at everything she attempted overall. Look how trim she is here, how stylish, and how focused on her character. She was a pro, always a pro. What the public did not know about her was she was tiny; in later year she wore hats which added to her height. She really never looked old even when she was old, nor did she ever lose her interest in life and challenges. She had a great sense of humor in private and a lot of interesting friends.

She's clearly not a trained singer, but I prefer JOAN'S voice as it fits with her acting voice and look!

Her voice wasn't half bad and totally usable in the film because her beauttiful face and figure more than made up for it. Miss Crawford looked even better in the 1960s.

This movie has to be seen at least once. It stumbles from one cliche to the next as it spins a tale of HOW IT'S LONELY AT THE TOP. Carol Burnett did a hilarious take off of this movie on her old show, and they called it TORCHY SONG. See it!

India Adams dubbed the singing for not only Joan Crawford but Cyd Charisse. In neither case did her voice suit the actresses.

JC sang most of her songs in the late 20's and 30's. She actually was a brilliant singer.

Apparently during her early MGM days, Joan did some singing and voice lessons, and was actually pitched to make music and musicals. But another star at MGM, Jeannette Macdonald, was already a singer/actress and allegedly told Mayer that there wasn’t enough room for the both of them. Since Jeanette was raking in big box office at the time, they decided to axe Joan’s possible venture into professional singing to avoid competition.

Joan actually had a perfectly serviceable voice, had they allowed a little more time for her to train vocally. Her tone and interpretation is actually quite lovely. She just needed a little more confidence and support.

In the 1930s she took vocal lessons. But by this point that was 15-20 years ago. She still sounded pretty good.

There was a "soundtrack" album released for this movie, and it was clearly labeled "India Adams sings" and (rumor has it) that Joan Crawford was NOT pleased that a Record was out which made it clear that the vocals were not from Joan herself.

If you watch her sing and dance in the Hollywood Revue of 1929, she seem to be having fun with the whole thing. Same year the musical picture "Great Day" gets shelved and never finished because of her insecurity with her performance. Her record with Gus Arnheim's orch of " how long will it last" gets shelved at Victor records, I don't know of any artist on screen whose recorded work got supressed as much as Joan. Marilyn Monroe's vocal records were'nt perfect by any means but they were released.

Her voice sounds pretty good to me. They definitely could have made it work with today's technology.

One must have been born with vocal ability, of course. If you've got that, then singing is all in the breathing. If tennis is all in the elbow and golf in the wrist - singing - it's all in the breathing. She's not breathing - doesn't have enough air to project and sustain the notes. I agree, however, that she sounds "decent."

The voice dubbed for Joan is just over the top. It sounds like the singer is struggling, not into the song at all and not sure of the lyrics. Joan’s voice really surprised me. That is what should have been in the film. It so puts the feeling of the song across. I mean hell...Lucille Ball was allowed to sing the whole soundtrack of Mame (1974)

The producer in the recording studio didn't discuss anything with Crawford like today's producers would have. Today it would be, "Oh that's great baby, just give it to me a little louder, softer. Not too much emotion when the bridge comes up. Draw it out right before the end. Sure sweetie-baby-cookie-honey . . . etc."

Best part of the movie when they go for lunch, Michael and his dog walk by Joan and he growls at her, lolololol. I certainly see what Liz Taylor saw in him.

This is crazy... her voice is so unique, with so much personality, dubbing was one of the worst things that have happened to cinema, evryone sounded the same! a few months ago I heard the real voice of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, she was good!!!!

Did you make this track from the audio supplement on the DVD? The only reason I ask is that there is a track on the 2006 edition of the That's Entertainment soundtrack set. I haven't heard it, so I don't know how similar the take is.

As others have said I thought she sounded pretty good. I was expecting something bad.. I guess because of the movie was really about a really great singer they had to have a really great voice but in my opinion she did fine.

Okay. I have researched for many hours, days, weeks, months. I know that Joan Crawford had a very good singing vocal, however the facts that I have read, or heard by audio tell me that her vocals were never used in film. "Follow Me" in Torch Song was dubbed by India Adams. An act that was very disappointing to Crawford.

There's a scene in this film where she's in black face makeup then she rips off her wig after an argument with red hair underneath in 2023 that looks insane
