Joan Crawford At Warner Bros. Part 1

In 1943, Joan Crawford left her home at MGM for Warner Bros., where she won an Oscar for Mildred Pierce and also a variety of roles to greater acclaim than ever before. I find her courage in the face of sexism and aging tremendously inspiring. And, I wonder how far anyone might have gone with a fraction of her drive and ambition.
Here is an excerpt from Crawford at Warners, my documentary for Warner Home Video's DVD of Flamingo Road. You can see it as "enhanced content" on The Joan Crawford Collection Vol. 2.

Joan is my favourite actress ever and should have won additional Oscars for Humoresque and Sudden Fear. B uilt herself up from nothing, became a first rate actress and is the epitome of movie star.

Joan Crawford also had a reputation for either being almost a butch lesbian or as a man eater. I heard that she was the original choice instead of Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity. Can you imagine Joan Crawford making out with Burt Lancaster in that famous beach scene. Poor Burt. If I saw Joan Crawford coming at me like that in the film I would turn around and run for the hills; or I would have my dick scream "I want my mommy" and shrivel up inside me till it disappears. This would work for me also if his costar too was Bette Davis.

Two stories I love about Hollywood's parochialism in World War Two. (1) When Gable came out of the service, he met Joan at a party and she said: 'Oh darling, you've been away so long I guess you feel right out of it. You probably don't even know that I moved from MGM to Warners.' (2) When WW2 broke out Joan's previous employer, Louis B Mayer, held an emergency conference. He told his minions that America had come through terrible ordeals before and would survive this one. 'And so let us drink a toast to our President- Nicholas Schenck.'

@tremainejotham297
@tremainejotham297 4 года назад
Well, multiple former staff members who worked for Joan had backed up Christina's story. Also a number of celebrities who had witnessed Joan's behaviour towards her children. For instance one remembered Christine all dolled up and he complemented, only for Joan to say aggressively 'Aren't I pretty too?'. Another when she had lunch with a friend, where her son asked for a single chocolate and had two. Joan made him eat the whole box and let him vmit the whole thing up, when her friend asked why she made him do it she apparently said 'Well, now he won't do that again'. Had there not been witnesses I would not be on Christine's side, but Joan was a phsyco egotistical lunatic who thought about no one but herself. Even when she had the twins, though apparently she toned it down considerably for them. Christine was put through hell and I wouldn't go around sticking the 'Brat' label on her on speculation and suspicion alone.
@Honeymoon1988
@Honeymoon1988 4 года назад
Tremaine Jotham and there’s also a number of people who go against that story and say that Joan was nothing but an amazing mother... I’m sure she was strict, I’m sure she probably disciplined them which as parents you should... that’s what’s wrong with kids these days they are so sensitive because people are afraid to discipline their kids when they’re bad. I’m on the side of the twins. Why would they lie and say they had an amazing mother?
@tremainejotham297
@tremainejotham297 4 года назад
I'm not dismissing the twins story, as I said before she was evidentaly a far better mother to them than Christina and her brother. You can not dismiss children as being sensitive if their parents put into practice the disgusting 'punishments' that Joan dished out to them. Joan may have been not the worst mother to the twins, perhaps she grew a conscience. Or maybe she just got better at hiding the fact that she took her insecurities out on her children during a period where she was on the decline.

Who really is watching “The Last of Mrs. Cheney” or “Laughing Sinners” or “When Ladies Meet” or “The Shining Hour” today? Only “rain”, “Sadie McKee” and “grand hotel” mainly…”the women” and “womens face” were also great but one was ensemble and the latter is on the periphery. Not mainstream…..Crawford really is remembered for her Warners roles. And then her 50s fame where she became almost a parody of herself with the severe eyebrows, lipstick and attitude that Bosley Crowther had accurately stated was as “forbidden as a pack of sealed razor blades”

At 26 seconds he says that in 1943 she buys up her contract at MGM. That is a total myth. LB Mayer gave her the boot from the studio because her films were not making any money and they really just wanted to get rid of her and all of her emotional and psychological baggage, child abuse events at home and all of her sleeping around with all of her leading men at the Studio. They just wanted her to get the heck out! She did not buy out her contract - LB Mayer made her pay the money back to the studio that she had borrowed against her films. She had to pay that back or face the consequences. MGM was through with her! Read, "The Man Who Seduced Hollywood ". The information is in there.

Joan is so tragic as a figure. I think she wanted someone to love her, and if she found a partner that could have babied her, she would have done so much better. It’s true that the love of a good man or woman can change people. She wanted love and she had such a tragic upbringing. And just found out not long ago her stepfather was inappropriate with her, but still she changed her name to his which was Billie until the studios had the fans vote on the name Joan Crawford. She was Billie Cassein. So that shows even though he betrayed her in the worst way, she was so desperate for a father that loved her she still tried to please him. Sometimes you wish you could help a person and give her the kind of man that would have loved her and given her the stability she craved.

Why invite Christina to speak...she basically ruined her mother's reputation with a very one sided book, and an exploitative movie...upsetting her mother's legacy......luckily her films speak for themselves.....

Christina book completely changed her image..the film did even more to cast a shadow...I know she had a reputation, but the wire hanger image is all many think of when you say Joan Crawford nowadays....

Parker930...I agree, the movie, which has become a cult favorite, paints an unflattering light, but if you are unfamiliar with her films, it's the only image you have...I happen to love old Hollywood movies, but I have the distinct feeling many aren't streaming the TMC classics...I remember when the book and film came out,and the consensus was this will tanish her reputation,and I believe it has...even that Ryan Murphy Feud mini series added to it...giving young people an unflattering perception.....

I just don’t believe Cristina Crawford. Mommie Dearest was a wonderfully campy film but fiction no doubt.

No honest assessment of Joan’s film career should include Christina in the commentary.

Crawford and Davis at the same studio?! A disaster in the making. You know that Davis must have resented this intrusion of Crawford into her turf!!!

She was an incredible actress though. Totally toxic real life personality.. mental illness and alcoholism.

Good god, I was enjoying a video about wonderful miss Crawford when her jealous daughter had to step in and tell all her nasty lies again. How annoying.

Joan's career consumed her. She was a jealous woman who acted her whole life in movies and out. She always seemed unstable to me in both lol....I find it sad.
