An introduction to the project: • A New Project - JacksG...
The Equipment breakdown: jacksgap.com/following-heart-e...
Hey there.
So then, a new project!
For a while now we've wanted to challenge ourselves to make a short film or documentary. We wanted to see if we could turn the camera around and tell someones else's story. When the opportunity came about to collaborate with Skype it seemed like a perfect time to try this new format. Over the last couple of months we've captured three short stories about three individuals who are using technology to pursue their passion. The series is called Following Heart.
This is the first short film featuring Danielle Turano. She's a violin performer based in Brooklyn, New York who uses Skype to teach her music to students around the world.
Thanks to Danielle Turano, Skype, The Freeman Family, The Bianco Martinis and The Rockwood Music Hall.
Directed by: Jack Harries
Camera by: Jack Harries & Tim Kellner
Edit by: Adrian Bliss + Jack Harries
Produced by: Finn Harries
Series Produced by: Lucy Evenden
Music by Lullatone

Wow can you please not ask Jack to make videos like he used to? Jack doesn't owe anything to an audience of teenagers. If you want boring ass tags and challenges, go watch the other thousand youtubers that create 'content' like that. Filming/watching videos like that is only a waste of time, and I'm sure Jack would prefer to be more productive with his time.

Filming/watching tag and challenge videos is not a waste of time to those who enjoy it... just saying.
@ellapiron7236

Though this video was cool, I'm just saying that watching tags/challenges is not a waste of time, it's what people want to do - or why else would they watch them? So if your gonna say it's a waste of time, your saying that millions of people waste their time watching them, which isn't true.

I think Jack and Finn are amazing and they make amazing videos/projects. But sometimes, sometimes I just wish to see Jack sitting in his room talking and playing banjo or making me laugh by showing what to do if u get bored in a hotelroom. NOT 'cause I am their subscriber and I want to. But because I just really really like them. :)

It blows me when people say they miss the old funny videos, they didn't sub for documentaries! Well go watch Marcus Butler, Alfie Dyes, Joe Sugg, and Caspar. Hell they make 1 video for you once a week with the SAME content. Do you think those funny quirky videos are going to farther their career in their 30's and 40's?? No! Jack is a film maker and has a lot of potential. Face it!

Sasha A I feel the same way! For me personally, they (Marcus, Alfie, etc.) were great for a while, but now I find their content so dull and mediocre. I don't find their videos funny anymore and it feels like they're making a video for the sake of making it, without actually putting some thought into. But that's just how I feel. But when I come to this channel, I am in awe at how they've grown and the impact they create at such a young age.

Right? I would rather appreciate a well thought-out, meaningful video that took time and effort to make (and that makes you really appreciate humanity) than some 5 minute video which lacks any form of creativity and tries to replace that by trying way too hard to be funny. I would rather want a video to touch me for a long time than one that makes me laugh (even that is an overstatement for most of the content out there) for 2 mins.

This is what I want to see when I click on a video. I'm fifteen and female. 'Female teenage audience' does not necessarily mean an audience that cannot comprehend real, true content. And for those who say he cannot make films, watch the rickshaw run series. That is filmmaking.

If you're going to complain about jack's videos being boring, why not watch every other youtuber who makes tag videos for money. Jack and Finn are pursuing their common interest for film and the fact that they want to share this content with you shows you how proud they are of their works and if you're going to put down their amazing short films because they're "boring" you should probably unsubscribe because if you don't find any interest in film you shouldn't have any place to criticise them.
@GabbyTeAma

For everyone arguing about the old channel vs the new channel, did you even watch the video? Did you see that?? Did you hear that beautiful music she was playing?? Did you see how her face lit up when she was working with children and doing what she loved? You just watched someone's dreams come true and you're unhappy because it didn't make you laugh. Everything isn't supposed to make you laugh. Some things are meant to inspire. When God gives you a talent for making videos, you can do one of two things: Use it to make yourself famous, or use it to change the world. Thank you Jack for using your talent to change the world.

I subscribed to you ages ago when you made quirky fun videos. Then you had your big break from youtube which lasted over 3 months. Then you posted your travel videos which I really enjoyed. But now it's just serious documentaries and things like that. I loved the old videos you made where Finn was also involved like PO Box videos and just random stuff and I get that you guys are growing up and do more serious stuff. But I think I speak for some of your subscribers when I say I'd like it if you brought back your fun, quirky videos back. As much as I love both of you, you're turning into Barcroft and I just miss your old videos because they were more enjoyable to watch but I also like your documentations and stuff like that but I think there should be a balance between serious videos and fun videos xxx

Jack, I know people are complaining about how you are not the "fun Jack" anymore, but they clearly don't see how talented you really are. You are more than just a hot boy youtuber, you are a director, and a pretty amazing one at that. Your work is outstanding and inspired me to pursue a role in the film industry. Lets say, that you never picked up this passion and stuck to the normal RU-vid layout, I would have never taken and interest in film. And film, like Danielle and her music, is my escape. So I thank you.

I think that something that could make this little fight stop is maybe having two channels, one for vlogs and Q&As etc, just so people can enjoy their personalities, which is something that I think we would all enjoy since that's why we came here in the first place. But also having this main channel to post professional things like this new series and shed sessions... like things that allow them to do what they love as filmmakers.
@vkarlsson
@vkarlsson 9 лет назад
I dunno if they have time for that though. It's not like they're just filming Monday, editing Tuesday and relaxing the rest of the week. Also, the film making is a part of their personalities. I think it shows through their videos. And I mean, they are going to grow up some time, they already have so I think we should just be grateful we still can watch them for free on RU-vid :)
@JeniFonseca
@JeniFonseca 9 лет назад
I agree, but thats why the videos on the other channel don't need to have like really good editing or anything like this... they could just be like vlogs and stuff, just because even though we can see their personalities on these videos here, we don't get to actually see them, you know? And I know these videos are great content and they put a lot of work into it, but people miss just watching the guys being themselves sometimes.
@jackmilne1831
@jackmilne1831 9 лет назад
Jeniffer Fonseca The reason they don't do this is because they don't want to fullstop. I know people all enjoy the fun silly videos they used to make just like so many other youtubers (and don't get me wrong I enjoy alot of sit down silly vlog videos now from other creators). But the reason they don't make that type of video anymore is because they don't want to. As much as their old fans try to force them back into the simple vlog stuff, if they caved in and actually did it, it would be fake. because they simply just don't want to. If they wanted to continue being silly and funny and not high quality (which is fine, i'm not judging) then they would have never made the change to all of this amazing directing and producing style of documentary/short film videography. because this is what they want to do.
@JeniFonseca
@JeniFonseca 9 лет назад
I get what you're saying but I don't thinks it's because they don't want to, I mean Jack did an 'ask jack' not too long ago, but they don't have time to edit these other videos when they're working on professional stuff, so that's why I suggested a channel where they wouldn't need to do that. But anyway, It was just a suggestion, if they actually don't want to make the other kinds of videos it's ok, people also love the new content.
@jackmilne1831
@jackmilne1831 9 лет назад
Jeniffer Fonseca even though I assume that ask video was just a filler video to get to know more about the filmmaking side of Jacksgap, you do make a very good point. :) But even if they did make a second channel, knowing Jacksgap, they would still put heaps of effort in. :) We'll just have to wait an see what goes on I guess.

I wish more youtubers were like you and cared about adding value to the world and the RU-vid community. There's a bunch of youtubers in England who just videotape each other doing stupid challenges or tags and sit on the money from RU-vid ads and provide NO valuable content. So many people need to understand that Jack and Finn are growing up. They're moving away from the generic challenge videos to bigger and better and more mature things. Hate to say it, but they're catering to a different audience now. They obviously don't want to lose their original fan base but want to expand to make a footprint in more advanced film making that takes time and skill to edit and produce the videos. I'm no expert but I can tell they have very good editing and filming skills and videos like these are a great way for them to pursue their professional career in this industry.

I much prefer these videos over "tags" and "Q+As". Every single one of Jack's videos has such dedication and time-consuming, hard work behind it. They're not just some roughly edited and quickly thrown together videos of him sitting on a couch answering questions from twitter. Personally, Jack's videos inspire and entertain me more than RU-vidrs just talking about themselves to a camera - but if people are complaining, then so be it. There are plenty of channels out there for that kind of thing. Meanwhile, I hope that there are people who can appreciate such amazing videos as these.

As amazing as your old videos were,I am baffled by your new ones. It speaks to me on a deeper level and it's so rare to find this level of creativity ,work and thought put into a video. It's exciting watching you grow with each video,a different perspective in each that I am perplexed. I can only dream of being able to do something like this ,to come up with something so inspiring and to view life in-depth and perceive it in many different ways. Keep doing you because it's beyond words and I find myself sucked into this vortex of emotions . I think you'd make a remarkable video of a child growing up ,facing his tough times and moments of joy and watching it all fade as he meets the end . Obviously it won't happen but hey, girl can dream,right?

I can understand that people miss the old, personal videos on this channel, but I can safely say that Jacksgap has become the most inspiring and interesting channel on youtube that I know of. I love the variety, the concepts and just generally the projects. So yes, I understand that some of you might miss the old videos, but please just let them do what they want to do, because it actually inspires the majority of us and takes a different perspective. Yes, vlogs are good too, but there are so many channels that do them, so go watch them rather than trying to prevent something amazing. Thank you!

Amazing. In the best way I completely forgot I was watching a youtube video. I forgot what I'd clicked on, I forgot I was even watching this mini 'documentary' style video. I thought I was listening to her tell me her story. It just felt really raw, fluid and organic. It wasn't covered in flashy editing that takes away from the whole picture. I was resisting to comment on this video. God if you can't see the messages portrayed in Jack and Finn's videos your an idiot. If you came here for pretty faces and funny videos - you've come to the wrong place. Jack's content clearly possesses the fact that he loves what he does, and so does Finn. They enjoy making and telling the stories of others through this wonderful online platform, and just because their videos are of high quality, specifically edited and precisely shot, I'm not saying that any other you tuber isn't just as special as the guys that made this video. Lifestyle vloggers, comedians, beauty vloggers, travel bloggers - all of them are unique. I suggest you watch the ones you want and enjoy. Don't criticise their work because its not up to your standards, move on and leave the rest of us to watch in peace and respect the content that we love.

The documentary and the story behind it is amazing; but I have to say that the cinematography used to produce the video was amazing, how you set the focus throughout the video. I also loved the sound of the music faded in the background of the subway, it reminded me of the first party scene in The Great Gatsby

This was really, REALLY great. The videography was well done, sensitive without being sentimental. The dialog gave us a good idea what is going on in her head while not being too introspective. It was just strong, legitimate film work - like so much of your work is & is becoming. I'm very thankful for you, Jack, & you, Finn - 2 guys doing such strong work in an age group & genre that sometimes seems to lack depth & breadth. I know your mum & dad are proud of you, and so am I ;-) Thanks for all you are & for all you are doing.

I absolutely love this video for two reasons: 1. The film work is amazing and just breathtaking. Everything from the music to the videography itself makes this video an amazing piece of art. Jack and Finn, you did an amazing job with this piece of work/art! 2. I love the part where she talks about her students moving on to bigger things than she had ever done because it really relates to me. I have been taking music lessons on the bass clarinet and clarinet for 4 years now and I found out a week ago that I will be playing at one of the most prestigious venues in the world, Carnegie Hall in New York, in February with the Honors Performance Series Band. I'm doing all of this at the age of 16 and I feel that this is the sense of accomplishment that my teacher must have felt when I told her about me playing on an national level in such an amazing place!

I know that a lot of people are saying this, but I agree that you should have some more videos of just you and Finn being silly like you used to. I understand that you've grown up and you're not the same teenaged boys that everyone here subscribed to but I think it's important to keep in mind that about 90% of your subscribers are still teenagers that are here to watch cute twins be funny, not serious documentaries about violinists. I support your decisions to make your content more serious and artistic and by no means think you should stop but please just remember who got you here and what got you here.

That's true but if RU-vidrs made what their subscribers wanted them to and not what they wanted RU-vid would be a less diverse place. There shouldn't be any pressures on Jack or Finn to make certain type of videos. Do you think they would have been included in Buffer Festival if they kept making the same videos they made two years ago? If you want to watch cute guys mess around there are plenty of RU-vidrs who fit the mould, but there aren't many who can also say that they've partnered with big companies and been all around the world because of what they do, not what they look like.
@marissasaurrr

people change. artists change. taking filming making more seriously does not mean they've forgotten who they are. it means they're growing. and who says their main subscriber base don't enjoy being introduced to new types of content? from the looks of the like/dislike bar, everyone seems to be enjoying these new series very much.

Jack's videos aren't like everyone else's, he differs from the norm. You'd think that this 'new' Jack would start up a storm but no most people want the same old stuff If you think about it, it's all a bunch of fluff Cuz videos like these are worth watching and have meaning That leave you at the end totally beaming 'Content Creator's' are like flowers amongst weeds Channels like Jacksgap are exactly what RU-vid needs. He doesn't go with everyone else It's inspirational to me Jacks always tried to be himself That's what everyone should be. Just be yourself, do what you what you do Because we need some more originality.

This was so good. Can I just say, as a representative of the teenage girl demographic, that not all teenage girls watch purely funny and quirky videos. I myself don't. Yes, I loved their funny and entertaining videos but it doesn't have to be that way all the time. Not all youtubers have to be funny and make funny videos. There are many other youtubers out there for that. I love the fact that so much effort, creativity and genuine passion is put into these videos and the fact that it comes across so easily is truly something. Personally, I love these kind of videos because they can be so motivating and they give me a lot to think about. I am extremely impressed and am now looking forward to more of this series! :)

Jack and Finn haven't changed their content has and I support them 100%. It is the creator who produces and takes the time to upload videos on issues or things that THEY are interested in, if you say you're unsubbing, by all means, I'd prefer to see videos with originality that you can tell passion and dedication went into rather than 'recycled' videos. Don't get me wrong I liked Jack and Finn's old videos but just bc they stopped making them doesn't mean I'm unsubbing. Sure they may not be targeting their 'demographic' but as a creator I wouldn't want to upload just to become popular, I'd do what I'm passionate about and if ppl don't like the style so be it. I'd rather have less subscribers, but who appreciate the quality of the work than heaps of subscribers were only a few are subbed for content rather than watching based of looks. Kudos to Jack for doing what you want!

This video touched me personally. I know it may be an ad of some sort for skype, but that doesn't take anything away from the video at all I play the violin too, and let me tell you (me, an inexperienced seventeen year old) that it's not easy at all. Danielle even probably has it easier, but I'm not taking the guts and the will away from her because she definitely has it. I can really tell that she's a determined dreamer and she is using every single bit of her power to follow her heart, and I admire her for that. I admire her so much. Living in other countries, the ones that are more less fortunate and the ones that are dealing with economic problems, can really cause musicians and artists such a huge dilemma. It casts an enormous boulder that obstructs our way towards our dream, and sadly most of the people who are faced with these boulders lack the strength and the power to get it out of the way. Instead of trying, most of us give up, and we look for another dream instead.It is absolutely heartbreaking to witness a person give up on their dream. It takes so much to follow your heart, and dreaming of being a professional in the art or music industry is like playing through life in extra hard mode. Most of the musicians in our country are underpaid and unappreciated while most of the studying musicians are uninspired and terrified because they know what awaits them in the real world. Also, it's disheartening that most of the preparing music students, the children who dream to be, lack the teachers and the proper education they need for preparation. How do you expect people to follow their dreams if they are already held back at the starting line? It amazes me how Danielle has found a way to fulfill her dream. I, along with a million people share her dream, so I really do hope that the hard work of people like her pay off. I hope in the future, following our heart isn't something we need to think about, that it's something just beyond our grasps. She really is changing the world, one student, one music gig at a time. I am truly in awe. JacksGap, I really appreciate videos like this, if I may say so. I hope you realize how special this 6 minute clip is. This video inspired me, a pre-med student and a casual violinist, to still pursue music in the long run. Thank you.
