Hello, been a few weeks.
Progress has been pretty steady, but lots of things that just don't show well. Significant time has gone into nuts and bolts work like LODS, transitions and some audio changes.
However now I'm at the point where I'd like to show a few things.
The Saettia is nearing a fully functional state -- with the rigging and ship controls now fully operational. Cargo and provisioning systems are in place, along with the meshes to show this. Lighting and effects have been tuned a bit as well.
Lighting overall has had a number of changes. The player can now toggle the ship lights at will, and environmental factors can cause lights to go out as well, no more submersed lighting. I'm considering wether to add oil as a provision -- where you wouldn't need to manage each light individually, as the larger ships can have a dozen or more, but instead you would need a supply of oil in your provisions to be able to toggle them on, and it would be consumed at a slow rate when on. I worry that would add a frustrating degree of tedium, so I'm open to suggestions on the matter.
I am increasingly confident of a playable demo being available later this year. My aim for this is to be both a hook for player interest, as well as being a playable tutorial. I'd like to avoid as much text box style prompts as possible, but recognize that the controls here can be complex and not necessarily intuitive for players. So I've added more in depth tutorials, but given players the ability to just skip them if desired.

Yt random recommended made me discover a whole new world: this, and sailwind. While waiting to try sooner than later this magnificent project, i buyed sailwind, and I have to say, the shipping exploration games are now one of my most favourite gaming genre. Can't wait to try this. It looks more complex than sailwind, and i'm sure it will be a real satisfaction to be able to make the whole ship work! Wish the best to your project!

Fantastic! When it comes to oil etc I think it's a great idea. Personally I like preparing for a journey and make sure everything I need is there. Also, depending on what kind of gameplay you envision, it will give you something to do on longer journeys. Of course the ship needs to be sailed, but I think it's cool to have general maintenance to attend to too, as as you venture across the ocean. Keep it up! Look absolutely fantastic. You can count me in 😊

Glad to see I'm not the only one who just got a this as a super random recommended vid. TBH I saw the title and thumbnail and assumed it was a nautical piece of music but was surprise to find a dev update vid for a game I've never heard of. I'll be keeping an eye out for this because it looks like the kind of game I'd be into; survival, exploration and RPG. Curious to see what you do with the actual gameplay and story.

Thank you. :) It's a solo dev project, so the scope is somewhat modest, but I aim to get the mechanics fleshed out to a fairly high degree.

Just found out about this game today. Straight to the wishlist. I've been crushing sailwind, esail, and sailaway recently as i've become interested in the sailing aspect of these types of games/sims. rooting for you and this game to be a success.

Just make the lamp oil a toggle in the difficulty settings. It's looking GREAT!

Agreed, the best option is to leave it as a togleable setting for difficulty. Could even have 3 stages, no oil management (eternal lanterns), oil is a generic consumable (simple stored with the other supllies and lanterns use it automatically), manual oiling of all lanterns (player refills a handheld container from the supplies, and uses it to manually refill all lanterns).

Very cool, will definitely follow this game. Even though I would wish for a bit of pirate/combat action in an in-depth sailing simulator game like this. Not MMO style, but coop with a crew of friends doing PvE and exploring new lands. That would be really awesome, though I get that is outside of scope right now.

the only negative criticism I would have(caveat it's VERY early etc etc) is that either everything is massive, or you're incredibly short as the Player, I know you'll probably sort that out, everything else looks amazing, and I am SO looking forward to it!, The Ships look amazing, the details are fantastic!, Sailors, Sim lovers and Patrick O'Brian fans will love this game!. A VR version would lead to me refurbishing my Shed and turning it into a SimShip. Seriously.

Thanks. :) I've got that from a few people, and it's been a struggle to sort out what scale is out. Just general walking, or being on the ships? The scale should be about right -- but I get that games often have to muck up scale objects to get things to look 'right' so I'm definitely open to adjustments.

I've watched a few of your update videos now, project is looking great! Fwiw I don't think the manual aspects are manual enough. I saw a comment about hiding the oil filling on a difficulty slider. I think that would be a great idea if you're trying to appeal to a wider range of playstyles. Can't wait to see more

Back before his wife developed Alzheimers, my grandfather maintained a 40' ocean going sailboat and a 26' freshwater one. The 40'er relied on a minimum of 4 hired crew, but I can remember trips with more. My grandad could sail the smaller boat himself. Regarding the beached ship at 1:52... appears to be at least 60'... two lanteen-rigged masts... you'd need at least a dozen people just to make sail. The game looks beautiful, but I do like some AoS reality. Will the simulation be reflecting that reality, or will we be "pretending?" Whatever the decision, it's coming along. We can always use more sail simulations.

There's definitely a degree of fudgery going on -- I'm aware it would be impossible to handle ships of this size solo. I do plan eventually on a kind of hired crew to make things easier/quicker, but as a gameplay concession I've set things up to be manageable solo.

@@2eightnine I'm not familiar with the whole storyline of your game, but it's possible that you might be pushing fairly significant content too soon. A smaller ship - one just barely controllable by a single individual in an era without modern sailing equipment - might be a better option to introduce the various basic control mechanisms and basic sailing concepts, as well as adding the concept of proper crewing - something that is pretty important in sailing, no matter what era you're in. In the case of the AoS, a difference in crew quality could mean being able to escape a looming lee shore, out-sailing an adversary, or surviving a storm. Being able to hire a small crew, who could then gain experience, would allow the player to have a competent nucleus when transferring to a larger vessel. Might be fun :-)

"Happiness [is] only real when shared." (Christopher McCandless / Jon Krakauer, Into the wild) - I would really consider the multiplayer option. It's nice to be out there alone, for a while.. But the simulation, graphics and concept look amazing! So happy to have whatever comes out of this.

Hey Brandon, just curious, are you planning on doing a closed beta at some point? I'm really interested in games like this, and the current crop is all pretty disappointing, but yours looks fantastic! I'd definitely be down to jump in and play test it a bit

Excited for this. But oiling the lamps is a bit too much of a hustle. Also, if you use unreal engine, there is a great addon that simulates water. Fluid flux. Maybe something for you

@@chrisfox9492 thanks. Made in unity actually. It may come down to a difficulty setting, as a lot of players have asked for individually oiled lamps, but I went with a more automatic setup. You still need oil, but all lamps draw from a single pool, you don't have to manage them individually.

I’m deeply interested in the game. I love Sailwind, but I would prefer 1. Better graphics and 2. Not having to manually give my guy food and water every 20 minutes. Having a finite food supply in a ship game, well and good. Having to manually click pick up the cheese, eat, etc pure tedium. The trend of sticking the most boring of survival game elements in literally everything needs to end.

I am a Sailwind fan, I am looking forward for your game release! I really like realistic graphics and physics in game, your game looks outstanding! What software development tools do you use to create it?

Thank you. Lot of respect for sailwind myself, Raw Lion has done great work. Following Seas, like sailwind is made in Unity. Models are mostly blender

Another hand touches the... It's entirely possible. I unfortunately don't have the budget for bespoke music, or the skills to create it. I've licenced the music from a third party.

it is looking amazing, personaly i enjoy even more realism, but i understand the need to make things easier, after all a single person sailing a big ship like those in the game is not viable relisticaly.

Thank you. :) Square riggers are possible, but not currently on the roadmap. My sail tech doesn't scale well for a large number of sails, so anything beyond the smallest of square riggers would require a beefy rig.

How big of a ship do you intend to add to the game currently the biggest vessel is an xebec what kinds of vessels might we see once the game is out fully?

The xebec is actually one of the mid to smaller ships, the biggest currently is the triple deck saettia. I don't anticipate having anything much bigger, but we shall see

Will there be NPCs in the game? If so, there could be one that replenishes the oil in the lamps.

On the Caravel there is a small bunk at the stern below decks. Got to get a bigger boat if you want something cushy.

Well the ship definitely seemed to be up on the rocks so there would be a significant amount of damage to the vessel. Maybe add maintenance of ships as a difficulty option. Game does look amazing
