Hello, welcome to 2024 - and an annoying looped seabird sound.
Fairly small update here, as I've been stuck on a 7 days a week work schedule for a few weeks, but still have made some appreciable progress on the junk.
Texturing is well underway, but the most significant work has gone into adapting my sailing system to work a little better with battened sails.
Fortunately the base system is adaptable enough to work with most sail types, in that everything works mostly as it should, but getting the sails to look nice, and behave well while reefing has been a challenge.
It's important to me to be able to show that battened sails are not rigid, and that each batten has a fair bit of flex and range of rotation, while still being effectively tied to its neighbors.
It's not quite there yet, but I feel it's getting close. I need to do some significant testing to ensure my solution is performant however, as it's more complicated than I'd like, lots of configurable and spring joints.
I'm going to be working on this ship for probably another couple weeks, and my next task on the todo list is to improve environmental audio.
I've set up a discord server as well - but I'll admit I have no real experience with that -- so I'm not sure what I'll be doing with it. Stay tuned if that's something that interests you.

Thank you. Sailwind is fantastic and I've got a good few hours in it myself.

This game looks like it could be the game I dream of since I was young. I'm looking forward to more updates and the release of this game.

Man that's just beautiful. Just found your channel, and I think you have the prettiest Naval simulation I have seen (I don't know which genre this belongs to?)
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 8 месяцев назад
Thank you, very much appreciated. Not sure what I'd call the genre tbh. Sailing Sime Lite maybe? For some reason youtube keeps tagging it as belonging to Naval Action -- but there's no affiliation there. I have no ptw ha.

Haha yea I saw you previous comment, I haven't even looked up Naval Action. I just think your game looks great. The interaction system looks neat, to much interaction and it can become confusing for inexperienced sailor. And some things just become a hassle instead of entertaining, you have found a good balance. If you create a discord I will join it

The water on your main menu looks really good, is it the same during gameplay?
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 8 месяцев назад
Thank you, yes the water is the same. Some minor shader differences (namely foam is disabled in the menu to keep it clean looking, but other than that it's identical.)

What are plans for the max and min system requirements? It would be wonderful to have the game look alright even on slower machines.

Bit early to say -- but my aim is to have it playable on steam deck. Right now it manages 30+ without much optimization, so we shall see.

The ships look amazing, what methods do you use to make them?
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 7 месяцев назад
Thank you. Nothing too fancy -- they are built in Blender with standard hardsurface methods.

@@2eightnine Thanks for the reply. Is there any tutorials as to making ship hulls similar to yours? Im not very experienced in blender.
@2eightnine

That's a bit tough to answer. There's nothing about these model's that's unique to ships or blender vs models for any other purpose. (i.e. the same steps would be used making a car or house in C4D or Max) If it's something you'd like to learn, there are many collections of draft lines or blueprints for ships -- mostly from wooden models that are excellent starting points for topology. Some of my ships are directly based on real period line drawings as well. (The xebec is based on the La Requin) From that point it would just be a matter of learning the interface and basics of 3d modelling. @@Brzzb

What do you think the spec reauirements would be?

My aim is to have it playable on steam deck. Biggest bottleneck right now is textures, but it can manage 30+ on the deck without much optimization done yet.
