@@ClimateDude not really. Sailwind has far less accuracy especial on Junks. Also I don't see where in Following Seas where you will sleep (let the ship go on while you have no consciousness) which is proven to be problematic design in Sailwind.
At launch it's just a quest -- but longer term plans are for a bit of a mix. This is a post apocalyptic setting, and a big goal of the game is to help supply and rebuild a town on one of the islands. Not like a city builder -- but similar idea to the town in Ashen, except you play a bigger part in building it.
It's on the wishlist -- but it's not a main goal. I don't want to exclude the vast majority of players without access to headsets -- and while I think the immersion would be great, I feel it runs a high risk of becoming tiring quickly, as there's a lot of extended sailing without much action.
@@2eightnine I totally agree with you. The virtual vision should be a supplement, not the final goal. But having the possibility to navigate with the headset is an extra touch that fits perfectly in this kind of games (imho)
@@2eightninedefinitely agreed, I use VR while flight simming from time to time, and I end up only using it for take off/landing on long flights, I switch back to the monitor for the enroute portions
This sailing game looks incredible! The graphics and realism are just stunning-it's like you're really out there on the water. I'm definitely going to give it a try. Can't wait to set sail! 😮
Can we control the sails by slacking and tightening a sheet (rope with pully) instead of physically moving the loop of rope from pin to pin? Non-sailors won't care either way, but IRL sailors will want to see it done correctly.
Hey there, just stumbled onto your game and your channel and iv got to say your doing a amazing job. As a old vet from Pirates of the Burning Sea, iv got to say your models are looking great!
Finally, a sailing game focused on transport and not pirates. I feel like the History of shipping itself is underrated, historically speaking. I still would like oneday a game like this, but with steamships though.
Hopefully future iterations will also showcase player models and animations. Promising sailing game, but looks like everything is operated by the main character of a translucent ghost.
Definitely similar in a lot of ways. Less focus on customization, survival, and object manipulation, but a bit more narrative and ship functions like pumping, kedging, and ballast management.
Sailwind is a great game, definitely an influence in some areas, but the same could be said for most first person 'boat' games, the old Sea Dogs games and some older immersive sims were also big influences. Sailwind as a project focuses a lot more on economy, ship customization, and survival elements, while FS (aims) to focus more on immersion, setting, and ship operation.
@@2eightnine The reason I left the comment is because the actual UI elements look almost copied from Sailwind. I'm not bashing your project, I really hope this takes off, because as far as I know, there is only one realistic sailing simulator right now: Sailwind. So by all means, take the wind out of Sailwind's sails (hah!) and make this game a banger!
@@NavidIsANoob Hope it didn't come across as salty -- it's inevitable that similar games will be compared, but I don't want to foster the idea that I'm trying to rip off or replace Sailwind. They are similar projects but going their own ways -- and I hope for Raw Lion's continued success. Plenty of room on our HDD's for both.
You making great thing, thank you, i am accudentaly found this video in RU-vid and recommend to my subscribers [i am small game journalist, srry for my endglish)]
Oh man, this looks like exactly the sailing game I've been looking for for years! I used to love the old sea dogs series, but wished it was more about sailing and travelling, and less about fighting.
Not that it's a bad thing, but Following Seas basically looks like a prettier, slightly more simulator take on "Sailwind," which if you haven't tried, you should give it a look. I had a good time with the game and it's not too expensive. It does get periodic small updates, so it's not abandonware, just slow. The sailing sim scene is tiny, so there is definitely room for many more games, even if they are very mechanically similar. Fans of the "genre" are really after the trade and exploration, the relaxation and thrill of the journey, so the gameplay and mechanics can be very similar. It's like IL2 Sturmovik and DCS, both are intricate combat flight sims with very similar mechanics, but just different settings.
It looks terrific, and I love all the navigation tools and mechanics. I am a pretty big fan of Sailwind and this seems like basically more of the same (in a good way), but more in depth and realistic. My only gripe is minor, and that is the fonts and some of the UI layouts and text elements seem pretty clunky and a little hard to read, but that stuff is relatively easy to fix, but it does make the game look a little unpolished.
@@2eightnine Yea, its just the icing is a little smudged, the cake looks delicious and I'll definitely be going back for seconds. Keep up the good work, your progress over the past few months has been really impressive.
Yeah you're right. Reflections and shadowing was a bit of an issue. Should be ready in time for the demo's launch in October, but didn't quite make it into this vid.
This reminds me of that one old game where you use a hot air balloon to race your.. brother, or friend, I don't remember which, to the north pole, landing and collecting fuel and such on the way
@@sosigakaweinerman869 I'm not familiar with that one. Interesting you mention that though, as a steampunk airship game was another I'd considered making
Talk about Targeted Advertising 🤣🤣🤣 I'm legit watching Pirates of the Caribbean right now. Me and my grandma are binging all the movies right now and we're currently going through At World's End. Game looks pretty interesting tho!
I was waiting for the game where you can manage the sail ship and don't have such small world like Sea of Thieves, or not been able to play first person like Naval Action
Essentially two reasons at this point. The game is in early development, so NPC's have yet to be added. Secondly it's a post apocalyptic setting where human population has crashed to tiny pockets.
I'm curious, will this game have any other rigs? it seems from most of what I've seen on the channel all the boats have lateen or junk sails, will there be any square-sailed ships? Either way it's on my wishlist and an instant-buy, I have like 500 hours in sailwind and I imagine I'll have another 500 here xD
It's possible, but there won't be tiered square riggers or anything with a large number of sails. I wanted to focus on less-seen designs, and I've gone with more complex individual sails that wouldn't scale well to 10+ sails.
I just saw this on steam and it looks like a lot of fun! But, can I still play this if Im terryfied of things underwater? Will there be sharks or something else?
There's currently nothing underwater. It's murky and dark, and you can sink -- but no sharks or sea monsters or anything like that. Some mild horror elements are planned -- but it's not like subnautica or anything designed to play on Thalassophobia.
It's definitely similar in a lot of ways to Sailwind -- but it's a different project. Less focus on customization and survival, but more on ship functions and setting elements. I don't want to create the idea that I'm copying Raw Lion's homework, and I feel both projects can be enjoyed. SW was definitely an influence, but so was Sea Dogs and old immersive sims.
@@2eightnine Didn't meant to throw shade like that but I guess I did I feel really bad. Especially when I already clocked in 600 hours into Sailwind. That game is so cool. I'm glad that you want to provide a different experience. More variety for me!
@@dkelrk1 Wasn't trying to call you out -- all opinions welcome. It's just a lot of comments come out as if this were Sailwind 2, or a project made to replace Sailwind, which isn't true. I want Following Seas to be it's own thing, even if the roots are similar.
So, no combat, no horror elements, just you, a map to explore, a ship, and the weather? Sounds utterly wonderful! Will it eventually get a console release, do you think?
Sure hope the dev gives us the option to turn off that big ole white dot crosshair. That kind of eye sore is annoying. Otherwise its looking promising so far.
My focus is on ship designs from Asia, the Iberian Peninsula, and parts of India. So there may be some square riggers in the future -- but it's mostly going to be lateen rigs, junk rigs, and similar styles. While the time period of my selected ships is kind of nebulous -- it largely predates the complex large styles of the 17th and 18th century.
@@2eightnine dang, was hoping there would be some full rigged ships. If it’s 15th and 16th century that we’re focused on, is there any chance we’d see the likes of caravels and carracks, and their cut down variants? Or if it’s smaller ships we’re focusing on, perhaps we could do brigs or sloop of war?
Pretty low to be honest. I would like to add some combat elements to the game in the future, and there is already the bones of a damage system -- but the mechanics just aren't designed for a PVP experience. If that's something you are looking for -- take a look at Ahoy, seems to be the angle they are heading.
@@2eightnine i get it, wish it were diffrent but i get it. Looks like solid work tho hope the game does well. Havent heard of ahoy but i will check it out thanks
I would call it sim-lite. I aim to capture the 'feel' of being at sea, with a fair degree of complexity. I don't however aim for 100% accurate physics or ship performance, and numerous elements are simplified to a degree.
NPC crew is a planned feature, but is far down the list. This isn't aiming to be 100% realistic, more sim-lite, so you can sail the ships solo without much issue.
@@NovardNoodle I like sailwind, and it's definitely been an inspiration for certain elements. That said I don't intend to copy what raw Lion has built, and I'm just as much inspired by the old sea dogs games and immersive sims.
The aim here is for more nw Pacific look, so more of a grey-green except in the bluest of skies -- with loads of foam (I mean loads, it can be 10 ft thick on beaches some days -- and plenty of it on the water.) Much more oxygen rich and life bearing than the bluer waters like you see in the Caribbean.
Looks really cool, but it seems kinda strange to make a single-player game like this, given that sailing ships typically have, you know, a crew. A more realistic and adult Sea of Thieves that's more about sailing and less about all the nonsense SoT is about could be a really chill game with some friends.
I definitely respect the desire for multiplayer. It's a solo dev project at this point, and multiplayer (at least to be implemented well) tends to be a significant undertaking. I try to resist scope creep to get to an unmanageable level. This isn't going to be a full priced game bursting with content, at least not at the start.
@@2eightnine Totally understandable, and as someone who dabbles in game development himself I understand the extra complexity multiplayer presents. Non-competitive private lobby only multiplayer would still be really cool though, and would sidestep many of the most difficult parts of multiplayer architecture (i.e. dedicated servers and ensuring that people don't cheat). I hope the project will be successful enough to enable you to consider this in the future!
