I hadn't planned to shoot any more videos this year, but my wife wanted to go shoot some videos with me, so I obliged her. I figured I'd finish the piece I started two years ago on the SP Eastside Branch (which I did), and ended up catching a full day of action in the Fresno area, the rest of which will be in other videos.
So, join us as we follow the SJVRR out onto the former Eastside Branch to do some work!

Sunmaid Crossing used to have the old style Santa Fe cantilever signal. The old Sunmaid Raisin plant was located there, served by both SP and Santa Fe.

I remember when Sunmaid Raising moves to Selma. Their old plant sat vacant for a long time and the S.P. had a big wooden sign on the corner saying it was for sale. I can't remember if it just said Southern Pacific or Southern Pacific Land Co.

Hello there Mr. McGowan, I travel to Fresno quite a bit and I noticed last year they rerouted the main line through downtown Fresno. I assumed it had something to do with high speed rail. It was great seeing the wig wag signal. There can't be many left in The U.S.

@@MarkClayMcGowan the Exeter branch had some pretty interesting operations in the fifties and sixties. Alcos abounded and mainline detours occasionally hit 70 on the stretch past the curve South of Sanger toward Reedley.

That same railroad also operates in Ohio (Rc and PE). Sad to ,see the taggers totally destroyed that lead engine. I have seen them all over. I don't know if they lease out their engines or what. I guess I'll check it out.

Mark, on a curve, is it the inside or outside wheel that is slipping? I would assume that with time you could see rail ware on onside or the other. Jennifer is looking good as yourself. Take care, the Griswold Family.

It's not the wheel slipping that causes the grinding sound, but the flanges against the sharp curve. I would imagine the outside set is the one protesting the loudest! I'm sure the rail takes a beating, but at such slow speeds, and little use, the rail should be good for some time. I noticed that where I was parked were old ties and rail pieces, so this lead is probably relatively new. Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!

Just saw one of those SJVRR engines at Bakersfield last Wednesday. Oh, and Pierre is the capital of South Dakota. It's pronounced Pier.

On that tight curved siding I bet the neighbors there would love it if the conductor with a walk in front of the locomotive and squirted some 3-1 oil down the tracks

I really don't know. Perhaps future parking or footing area for a pedestrian bridge for the HSR? This is a heavily trafficked place. I'm attempting to get more HSR info so I can do a piece on it. Maybe some info about this is forthcoming. Thanks for checking it out!

They don't care about it really. In the face of the theft of freight, copper from locomotives, and assaults of crews in yards and and on the rails, it's not a priority for railroad police, and municipalities certainly have no time to deal with it. It rarely happens on railroad property and has no effect on operations. Paint doesn't affect the Automatic Equipment Identification system. With the imminent downsizing and/or closing of many prisons in California, they wouldn't prosecute them anyway.
