Fontainebleau, situated just south of Paris is without doubt the world’s premiere bouldering destination. At over 100 bouldering areas with more than 10's of thousands of problems and counting, to climb them all in a lifetime would be unthinkable. This is place where the concept of bouldering began to be understood, and was developed into the mainstream practice it is today.

Holey crap I totally met Jacky in my first time at Font. We were trying this helicopter boulder - I think the locals called it the leg breaker or so, maybe v5-6. We were trying and trying the crux and just couldn't land it at all. Apparently someone had just injured themselves an hour or so before we got there. Anyway, Jacky shows up with a tiny little crashpad, like doormat sized. He looks at the problem a little bit, puts the mat in a random place in middle of the boulder. He tries the boulder and at the crux he falls, does a little perouette in mid air and lands perfectly on the mat. Gets up and dusts himself off and then immediately sends the boulder. It was epic

sameee! whilst watching i suddenly realised he was that guy i had seen when i first went to bleau- also with nothing but a doormat. i think he might have even been barefoot that day too.. and i remember being so impressed but i had no clue, now its even more impressive haha

I'm 99% sure the boulder is called L'Hélicoptère because of the way you fall, like helicopter blades rotating. Haven't seen it confirmed but the amount of injuries must make it one of the more deceptively dangerous boulders out there, certainly seeing how it's not even that high and there are no rocks to fall on. It's also basically a 1-mover so people that want to do their first V5/6 (bit soft for proper V6 imo) get tricked into thinking they're close until they have to commit for the last sideways move and then drop like a rock after trying to hold the swing. Which might explain why there are so many injuries also. I wouldn't be surprised if Jacky has done that problem 100+ times though seeing how he is basically Mr. Fontainebleay, and it's a lot of fun if you stick it. No idea why I wrote this essay, I guess be careful to people that are going to attempt it and haven't done a V6 before?

Font is good, beautiful BUT definately no comparison to the sandstone of Rocklands in the Cape. I know its a huge burden, trying to raise the cash but you'll find it very, very different AND, worth every penny, cent, zloty, krone. WITH, sunshine, blue skies, better wine (controversy...),great food.OOPS,great bouldering, out in the open. Also has areas large enough to use a rope...in all the styles. European winter is the warmest time of year, very warm n sweaty. Euro summer,is winter in the cape,is probably the best climbing climate, down jacket required, then vest n t-shirt when the day warms up. A seriously incredible climbing area.

To sum up the local's comments - don't be an asshole, treat the area with respect. But that seems to apply to the tourists, not the boulderers. Or are they prone to oblviousness in that regard? I don't know, I'm not one (yet) but I have to say, seeing the area, and Jacky and the others talking about the climbing, I was in tears. Having been from the west coast of the US then lived in the Netherlands the past 5 years with its mostly tightly managed and unraw nature, this is what I've missed...

most of the trash is near the car park...that alone can give a hint at where it comes from. The areas that require long walks, bike, or horseback are generally clean. I guess any trash at the remote areas would be accidentally dropped. I suppose the same can be true for the areas next to the car park, but my suspicion is that tourists are not so careful to preserve the area.

Brushing chalk off also erodes the rock a little. The only way to preserve the rock is not to climb it at all.

You may have a point, but connecting with nature is not a bad thing. The only way to prevent human impact anywhere is for humans not to exist.... The point is to act responsibly when enjoying nature's beauty.
