Dave is addressing the harassment Violet (his daughter) received on social media after the band was unable to play “Everlong” at the previous show in Rogers, AR. The venue’s strict curfew was the only reason they didn’t play the song, he even says that in this video. With so many commenters below stating that “Dave didn’t want to play it” or “Dave’s tired of playing it but he owes the fans”, I thought I should clarify what really happened. Also…anyone who has watched Dave’s interviews over the past 20+ years knows he’s a jokester. The fact that so many people are taking him seriously with the “dial-up” comment shows they don’t know Dave. I can say the people in the venue that night were laughing because we all knew he was joking. Dave loves his fans and he’s a great guy. I know some fans were offended by the “get a girlfriend” comment to the people who know the band’s statistics. He should have been more clear in stating who he was talking about but I never assumed he meant the innocent fans who keep stats, I interpreted it as being directed towards the people who used those statistics to harass the band (and Violet) when they didn’t play “Everlong”.
Spam-harassing his daughter is a pretty chickenshit way to go about expressing their grievances. Every. Single. Video. I've seen of Dave supports the argument that he is one of the most gracious and empathetic human beings on the planet. He knows he's fortunate and doesn't let his talent or fame go to his head--he remains grateful to the fans who he views as an extended family. I'd love to meet him and have a beer sometime.
People need to understand that it's a fucking *_MIRACLE_* these guys are still together and making music and touring. They don't owe anyone anything, and when so-called "fans" decide they want to turn against the very thing they claim to love, that's when artists start to contemplate calling it quits. Dave doesn't _need_ to tour anymore. He's rich as fuck and can peace out any time it's no longer enjoyable. We should be grateful we get to live in a time where we get to experience and appreciate the art they make and enjoy their live performances, instead of harassing Dave's daughter because you didn't get what you wanted. That's middle-schooler shit if you ask me
Joe Walsh once said right before one of his biggest hits ... "if I knew I would have to play this song every night, ... I would have written a better song.
Not that I'm famous or anything lol, but having played in bands for almost 25 years I can tell you that if it's a really good song, you never get sick of playing it. Especially if people respond positively to it.
It's really ironic, since that song is the reason he can get away with saying this. Honestly, if he hadn't done the Foo Fighters after Kurt died, I highly doubt many people would still remember him. As stated, especially after writing this song. Literally every band hates their massive hits like that. It definitely would get old, but remember where you came from. The main reason Grohl has a very comfortable lifestyle is probably 50% because of this song. Only 50% is being pretty conservative too. Just my two cents.
Dave has talked about this before and said something like, that because there's no better feeling than a handful of people singing your song back to you, you can imagine what it's like when thousands of fans are, so he'll never get bored or tire of that
@@Hogiebear7 Ive played a lot of cover songs and had people sing along and its really annoying. When they dance it makes me want to stop playing right then
Man we got in after the bar awning was full! We were stuck trying to hide the little roof jut out by the merch stand. The damn beer stand was open but they wouldn't sell me a poncho! Absolutely insane show though.
Exhausted is a great song!! It’d be impossible to pick a “perfect” set list because they have so many amazing songs, it would end up being a 10 hour show! 😂
I was at the Rogers, AR show and it was amazing! They did not play Everlong, but I was ok with it. What they did do was play The Teacher for the first time live. It was intense, raw, beautiful and I was so happy to be there to hear it ❤.
They closed for Chicago Lallapalooza one year in I dunno, maybe 2010-ish. I think deadmau5 was on the other closing stage. It was a torrential downpour. They played and they played on until they were kicked off the stage. It was an amazing experience. Mud, sweat, adrenaline. I don't think anything can ever top that experience, but I've seen them once more since then, and it was still other-worldly. Not everyone sounds good live, and not everyone puts on an awesome performance live. But , from what I've seen and what I've watched, Foo Fighters to hit every time. Worth the ticket cost.
I don’t blame you!! The Foos are HANDS DOWN the best band I’ve ever seen live!! 🤘🏻 They’re one of the few bands that sound even better live than on the album (which already sounds amazing on its own)!!
@@DejitaruGhost this niche indie song called Everlong! Jokes aside, it was Everlong and The Colour and the Shape. I was just drawn to their music a lot more than most other bands and ended up listening to their whole discography, and it was perfect timing because But Here We Are is so phenomenal. It’s one of the few albums I have on vinyl now
Ive been a fan since i was a kid. I saw them live once and i’ll be seeing them live next time theyre in town whenever that is. They played like two hours longer than they were scheduled for. Absolutely the best performing band ive seen.
@Marksutter182 you are correct they end theirs shows with Everlong, however there was one time they didn’t. It was 2015, the break a leg/throne tour in Pittsburgh. That big curtain went up and we heard Everlong.
I don't go to gigs to sew the artist/band play the songs I want to hear. I go to see them perform whatever the hell they want to. I couldn't care less if they played my fave song or not. It's all about the experience.
He just mocked both all of the fans who paid money to come out and support his band, but simply couldn’t afford good seats, and all of the fans who simply are passionate enough to know encyclopedic facts about HIS band’s shows, essentially calling them virgins, all the while cursing like a try-hard fool to a gratuitous degree. Truly the epitome of humble and badass. This guy could call you out by name at a show, piss on a photo you, then say “fuck your mother” and you’d conveniently interpret it as a positive. Maybe time to zoom out some. This was toolish behavior on Dave’s part, and you can’t use the loss of Taylor as an excuse for showing this mean-streak side of him over being told people want to hear a song they love.
@@postilaatikko7384 yeah I was about to add he's NOT THAT HUMBLE. too bad he's a bleeding heart liberal. but I think he's had way more than 3 hit songs. have you seen his award case? 35 awards and 113 nominations. His music is quite moving.
@@UncleDeadly1031 he couldn’t play the song due to curfew and then people start harassing his daughter when she had nothing to do with it, fans shouldn’t be crossing that line and to be honest he handled it way better than a lot of “rock stars” would’ve (other artists might’ve just not played their song and said “fuck off”) . i can see how the ticket comment might upset some people but at the same time why would you get upset after being told you have dial up internet lmao. the guy has been joking around and trolling fans for 30+ years, it’s kind of your fault if you take it seriously. plus i’m sure 99% of that crowd went home happy anyway so why does it matter (not even a foo fighters fan btw)
Ultimately I understand a band getting tired of doing the same song every day, but when you write one of the absolute best songs in your genre, of course people will want to hear it everywhere you go haha
It would be awesome if they did a show of deep cuts. 1. DOA 2. Hey Johnny park 3. Wind up 4. Something from nothing 5. Watershed 6. For all the cows 7. Let it die 8. No way back 9. Skin and bones 10. But, Honsetly 11. Come alive (That’s all I can think of now but it would be fuckin killer)
I saw them in Fayetteville in ‘07 and then in Rogers a few weeks ago. I was deeply honored they played The Teacher. It was an absolutely amazing show. I hope they realize how many thousands of people truly appreciate them coming down to Arkansas. I certainly hope they return one day.
I'll never forget my first Foo Fighters show. 2017, Budapest. Band came to Hungary for a show after 20 years. First song was Everlong. I'll never forget that night.
They should just start opening with it from now on like they did on the Sonic Highways tour. And save All My Life or Times Like These as an encore opener. That way they play the song without having to worry about curfews and playing The Teacher during the encore. Everyone wins
Everlong's one of my favorite songs, but i honestly think it would have been really cool to have been at the one show in 30 years where they didn't play it.
I also think it would be awesome to be able to say you experienced the first live performance of “The Teacher”!! 🤘🏻 We got to experience “Show Me How” live for the first time in Pelham, and that was amazing!! 🩷
Billy Joel said at one of his concerts that there's certain songs he played where his mind would wander to what he was going to eat afterwards that night. He wouldn't say which songs those were though.
@@kemdo123 The fact that your YT page is all Gretta Van Fleet means you don't get a say at anyone's opinion 😂😂😂. A children's cover band of a cover band!
Seeing them live will be awesome even if they don't play it...zero disappointment, especially knowing that one day i could see Rick Astley perform it 😊
@@dr.quattro_224 oh very true. He came out at 11:15 for the encore and said they had a curfew of 11:00. Then they Played the Teacher. A nine minute song lol. I am by no means complaining about the privilege to see them live as well.
I went to that show and I was was fine with them not ending with everlong and I think its ridiculous that people went to his daughter and complained about it and I sure hope that those people do get girlfriends.
What a awesome fun night!! I was there!! Everyone was super pumped as it rained bad w/lightning and luckily show was only delayed after wondering if they were gonna have to cancel. So they played a awesome show as usual, and a great time was had by all!!!
He looks loose here. Love to see it. I was at the tour kick off in Gilford NH and, understandably so, there was a very somber vibe in Pavilion for most of the show. Still rocked of course 🤘🏻 Foo forever 🦅
The Dark Energy surrounding this entire operation is palpable and no one wants to talk about it. The vibe is getting worse, not better, and that’s what happens when you steamroll over the life of someone like Taylor Hawkins. Not sorry for feeling this way.
@BostonTransplant1 thanks for your thoughtful response. I thought the London tribute was one of the most beautiful moments in popular music history, it utterly obliterated my cynicism and I was moved to tears several times. Granted I was not there in person. The LA tribute show is where it started to feel weird, it didn’t feel right. And it wasn’t clear at the time what was gonna happen with the band. I’m not against anyone moving forward, but this band - this guy - Dave - didn’t even stop man. They barely lost touring time. They didn’t miss an album cycle. On the Wikipedia page if you looked at the discography you wouldn’t even know anyone died. Medicine at midnight Studio 666 Dave grohl book tour, Taylor Hawkins death, tribute concerts, but here we are now back to touring like nothing happened while making a point of SHOWCASING Taylor’s incredibly expensive hired gun replacement. All in like 2 years man. And the record, I don’t feel that way, it sounds half baked, you’re not gonna make a masterpiece without taking time to process it you know? The guy either wants to do this or is being pushed to do it by his world famously toxic management team (same one as Nirvana’s look how that worked out for Kurt). It just doesn’t feel right to me, an album 1 fan. It feels very wrong. And Dave making fun of people who paid hundreds of dollars for lawn seats in Alabama isn’t a good look, that’s not healthy. Parading his daughter around is not healthy, it’s a direct and clear emotional crutch the guy isn’t right. Nothing about this is healthy in my opinion. It’s wildly irresponsible and I’d bet, I donno, some figurative amount of money that this ends in rehab for Dave.
@@TubeSolePursuit Being an “album 1 fan” I’m surprised you don’t know the origin of that album. Dave created it out of grief from Kurt’s passing. He originally turned away from music after Kurt died, but eventually turned back to it, understanding that he could use music to cope with his loss and to celebrate life. Dave uses music as his therapy for getting through difficult times and that’s why he created another phenomenal (not to mention extremely emotional and touching) album after his mom, Virginia, and Taylor’s deaths. It’s not healthy to be extremely depressed for years and never do what you love because you’ve experienced a loss. If you’ve watched their live performances since Taylor’s passing, especially the first few concerts, you’ll notice a somber vibe, they haven’t forgotten Taylor, they are honoring him by continuing to make music! I know some people will be unhappy no matter what the Foos decide to do. I try to be empathetic and understanding, knowing everyone grieves in their own way.
From a fan who was at the Arkansas show, screw the people who did that. They came back out after time limit was already up and played the longest song they’ve ever made. Not to mention his daughter should NEVER have to deal with asshole fans
When they played Pula in Croatia they ended the first night with Everlong then started the next night with it, fking epic, front row both nights as well. Can’t wait for the U.K. shows next year.
I used to live really close to it when I was a kid in the 80's. I remember hearing bands like Poison and Motley Crue doing sound checks from my front yard.
I’d rather see The Teacher live any day. Then again I’ve seen them 3 times and all 3 times was mostly the same setlist and I have no plans to see em again until they start throwing in some deep cuts.
It’s an amazing song for sure! The only reason they didn’t play it was because of the venue’s strict curfew. With the ugly backlash they received, I’m sure it won’t be missed in future shows!
Yeah, I think that would be a very reasonable reaction. For many fans, it is their favorite FF song. Quite weird that there are commenters here trying to argue that it would be unreasonable to feel disappointed in this scenario.
@@JustinLesamiz Not at all. All I've said is that it is reasonable to feel disappointment that the song wasn't played, when it is typically played at all their shows. Fans spend their hard earnt money on these shows, and part of the deal is that they should reasonably expect the band to play their signature song. When that doesn't happen there is a justified sense of disappointment.
@@cookergronkberg I never said fans weren’t justified in being disappointed at not hearing their favorite song. I would’ve been sad if they didn’t play it at the Pelham show. That being said, I wouldn’t have a vendetta against my favorite band because they didn’t play one of my favorite songs. I also wouldn’t harass Dave’s daughter on social media to try and prove a point. You can be disappointed without being rude.
@foooschick Sorry, my comment wasn't directed at you, apologies if it came across like I was suggesting you said something that you did not. I was referring to a bunch of the other commenters on this vid.
Can kind of see his point, it's a great song, but imagine having to play it every fucking working day of your whole damn life. I think Lindsey Buckingham said something similar about Go Your Own Way. I can just imagine clocking into work every day and my boss going "Right, before you do anything else, you've no played Everlong today, and a lot of people are really disappointed about that, so you need to play it". I mean really, I just want to load the van and go out to site, can you not let me off playing Everlong for just one day? Then I realise, my boss loves the Foo's, and doesn't know I can play Everlong. I'd better not tell him, or that shit might just come true.
Yeah, imagine playing in a band for work and having thousands of fans screaming for a song you've written. Getting paid more than you could ever spend, just by pleasing people with your art. Must be fucking exhausting, I totally get where he's coming from. I mean, sometimes I won't do what's expected of me at work, because fuck the people counting on me to do my part
Wait....a grown ass middle aged adult commented on a young woman's tik tok to berate her dad for not singing one of his favorite songs at a concert? That's called stalking!
@2dopesick true, I was going more by the 'blowing up' statement Dave Grohl made in the video, meaning it happened an unreasonable number of times. Which makes me wonder of it was one person or a bunch of people. I don't know what's worse: one lunatic blowing up your kid's phone to harass your kid over something you did, or thousands of lunatics under the delusion that they're entitled to harass your kid over something you did.
I realize the point of this video wasn't to play the actual song... but still the point where the clip cuts off is hilarious--I actually laughed out loud.
Hey! Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm putting together a full video of the Arkansas concert Dave is talking about in this video. Would you mind if I used this footage at the end of the video? I think this "controversy" is absolutely hilarious, and would love to preserve his response to it. I argued with multiple people after the concert about this. I told them what we saw was a historic event, the first live performance of the Foo Fighter's longest song to date, rather than another in the over a thousand performances of Everlong that the Foos have done in the last twenty years. I couldn't convince a single person. Anyway, I'll put the link in this same video when it is ready. Please tell me if you disapprove and I'll take it down.
When Dave wrote it and when it was released are two different things. And, music wasn't instantaneous back then like it is now. Sometimes, it took years for a song to "hit."
Imagine telling the people that made you f u. If we never listened to Everlong he wouldn't be playing all over this world. I get his plythe but you made your bed and picked your lane. Now give me my song or f your ticket sales.
@@tvv178 YOU ARE SPOT ON! I HAVE TO PUT A SMILE ON EVERY DAY AND GIVE 110% TO KEEP MY GIG GOING! DO I LOVE IT EVERY DAY? F NO! I'D LOVE IT MORE IF I HAD THE FUN, ADVENTURE AND $$$ DG HAS. HE'S EARNED IT, BUT COME ON DG, DON'T LOSE YOUR MIND. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY A FAVORITE SONG, DON'T TOUR! HONESTLY, HOW DO YOU THINK PAUL MCCARTNEY FEELS TEARING INTO HEY JUDY THESE DAYS?
Hah i saw the foos at the same place but it was after their 2nd record had just came out. That was a billion years ago but it's kinda funny to hear him say they never played there before. AND THEY PLAYED EVERLONG.
I figured that this might be one song that got retired when I learned that the group was going to tour again. I figured that the drum part is so tough that nobody would really be able to do it as well as Taylor could.
I understand being disappointed if it’s your favorite song, but you can still enjoy the many other songs they did perform! They also had the live debut of “The Teacher” that night which I’m sure many fans were thrilled to see!🤘🏻
I think that is a bit of a mischaracterization. Lots of fans went to the show to see multiple songs, but felt disappointed when one of the biggest songs wasn't played. Seems like a very reasonable human response. Would you not feel disappointed if something you were looking forward to didn't end up happening?
@blltz4410 My response was to the OP, but sure, I agree that was poor behavior. There were however thousands of other disappointed fans, which Grohl (and others in the comments) seem to ignore.
Every show of every band I've ever been to there's one song I love they don't play. Get over it. You can listen to it on your phone whenever you want. 🤷🏽♂️
When it comes to the Foos, there are always lots of songs I wish they would play, but I know they can’t play a 10 hour show! 😂 They’ve played “Everlong” consistently for over 20 years, so I can see how people seeing them for the first time would be disappointed, but the only reason they didn’t play it was because of the venue’s strict curfew. I don’t know why so many people are saying it’s because Dave just didn’t want to play it. He literally confirmed in this video that it was because of the curfew.
@@foooschick Honestly, even if he did not want to play it, he'd still be right in my opinion. I can't imagine what it is to seeing the same song for over 20 years. But I am also weird like that, and I love listening to the new stuff 😅
Idk id be disappointed too. Everyone tapped into so many kids brains that to pay money to see them and they dont preform it would be incredibly lame. I feel artists become jaded over time and to them its mundane routine vs for fans its an experience youre paying for. When you pay to see a band, you want to hear the bangers, not a bunch of new stiff that isn't on the same level.
The Foos didn’t play “Everlong” at their show in Arkansas (two days before this video was recorded) due to the venue’s strict curfew. Fans were disappointed and some people decided to harass Dave’s daughter, Violet, on social media as retaliation for the Foos not playing “Everlong”. Violet had nothing to do with them not being able to play the song, the curfew had been reached and the band was told they had to stop playing. Dave was understandably upset about the way Violet was being treated online and that’s what he’s discussing in this video.
They did go ahead and play beyond the curfew about 30 minutes. I just think ppl were bummed that in over 2.5hrs they didn’t hear their favorite song that as been played at literally 99.7% of their shows lol
I remember when he came to SLC a couple years ago there was some guy barricade, Dave looked at him said “you look fucking bored dude, what do you want us to play?” The guy said “play Everlong!” Dave repeated what the guy said in a mocking tone then asked him “have you ever been to one of our shows dude?” Probably interactions like these that cause them to not play it as much, among other things too tho.
I say mockingly, but I don’t mean that negatively cause I’d probably do the same thing in Dave’s shoes. Like you give a guy the opportunity to request any song of yours and it’s the song they’re gonna almost certainly play because basically every band waits to play their most popular song until the end of the concert.
