When actually when this was filmed he'd quit the band but was working off the schedule while Franz Stahl was getting ready to replace him. Pat passed the torch at the Foo Fighters' performance at Radio City hall of the 1997 MTV music awards.
Dave looks so effortlessly confident here. On ‘The Colour and.the Shape’ Dave did what he had to do to make the album as great as possible. If it flopped he might not be packing stadiums now or even have a career now. I have so much respect for Dave including his decision to re-record the drums himself-rather than keep tracks he considered subpar to not hurt feelings. Dave had a lazerlike focus then and now and is a true survivor. Dave had/has drive, ambition and the talent to back it all up.
I don't know. I don't know if you asked Dave now if he had left the drum tracks as they were with William playing them that the album would've sounded worse to 99% of people. From what I've heard I think they might have even sounded even better. The story behind that first session was Dave meeting pressure from the record company to quickly put out another hit record, and then going to an incredible and expensive studio and wasting a lot of money, tape, and time due to insecurity and uncertainty, most of it from the taskmaster production style of Gil Norton. There is a great write up about it here: www.foofighterslive.com/sessions/foo-fighters-bear-creek-studios-nov-dec-1996-31 Basically the whole re recording of the album was because a lack of confidence and Dave finally re did it himself on the cheap knowing there would be no one left to blame but him if it flopped. I think The Colour and the Shape could have had huge potential as a proper transition between the post Grunge first record, and the slick modern rock it became that informed later Foo Fighters work, but it instead feels like a harsh transition with no explanation. Between Dave and William sharing drum duties (he said back in 1996 that some songs would feature that, My Hero being the one he later seemed to hint at), the huge room at Bearsville, Gregg Keplinger handling teching and drum sounds (Superunknown, anyone?) and Gil producing, the potential drum sounds alone sounded insane. I hope one day Dave will reconstruct the album with the original Bearsville tapes, just to see what he had there.
William is an amazing drummer, Dave was just picky then. He even said it in an interview. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5C_1NN4KMO4.html, although it's indirect.
I remember exactly the live...i saw it live front of my tv and i think it was the first tv appareance with taylor Hawkins...it was powerful and the sound is great with the gibson too... the tv show in 1999 in canal + with learn to fly was good too...
J'aurais tellement aimé connaître cette période où on passait du Foo Fighters même au Festival de Cannes et pas du Aya Nakamura ou ce genre de conneries par exemple...
'f'course ! He's always chewing gum. He was already chewing gum in most of his interviews with Nirvana. He's so hyperactive that he must keep is mouth busy when he's not singing or speaking haha.
Not to mention he's in a band with Pat and Taylor who are even more hyper than he himself is. I can only imagine how tough it must be on Chris and Nate....
I remember seeing this live on live TV. I had a VHS and was recording every performance of bands playing NPA, waiting with my finger on the REC button. It's so cool that all these performances are on youtube now. NPA was a really great show and the Cannes editions were even better. Among others playing at cannes I remember Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, Faith no more...
Dave almost eats shit coming back to the mic. It’s pretty impressive he manages to stay on his feet. I’d imagine that stage is pretty slick from the spray coming off the water.
