Hi, as an intending international Amtrak Pass traveller can you please advise what type of payments are accepted in the cafe car? cash? or only debit or credit cards - if so does Amtak accept Visa? Also what is the tipping policy on board the train in the cafe and riding coach class? Many thanks - Love your postings have learn't lots

@@AJV723 Hi Alan, thanks for watching! Good question - I'll add this to our list to make a video about too because I bet a lot of people are wondering. During the pandemic, Amtrak stopped taking cash onboard, but they're back to taking both cash and card in the cafe car now, Visa included. I always recommend paying with a card so you can carry less cash (because credit card reward points are awesome and it's just safer to not have a lot of cash), but it is a good idea to have a little bit of cash with you just in case their card reader isn't working. That's very rare, but it has happened. For tipping, I would recommend tipping $1-$2 each time you go to the cafe car, especially if you're asking for free items like hot water, utensils, napkins, etc., and especially if you're on a long journey (when you will be asking the same cafe car attendant for things multiple times). A small tip can go a long way with cafe car attendants, because not everyone tips them. I hope that helps! Please feel free to send any other questions you have. I'm always interested in hearing where you're planning on taking the train and where you're visiting from if you want to share 🙂

@@inthegreatwide Hi, many thanks for your great information and details, certainly helps to ensure I practice "when in Rome do as the Romans do". I am a Kiwi rail traveller that has previously travelled on Amtrak on a 2 week pass many years ago and a couple of shorter legs on the Californian Zephyr in 2019. There is still so much of your great country to explore and meeting locals on trains is a great way to really appreciate the country. I have purchased a 30 day pass which is coach travel and with the 10 segments and a couple of additional tickets purchased start in Portland and travel all 4 long routes to/from the West Coast from Chicago as well as travelling every East Coast route so will cover Portland to Miami, Boston to Los Angeles and end up in Emeryville. I do have an overnight break at the end of each long segment and spare days in Boston, New York, New Orleans and Miami so not all hard slog. Having travelled by train from Hong Kong to London in 1980 I am looking forward to it. Keep up your good posts. Cheers and thanks

Man a prime rib dinner on a train sounds lovely. Amtrak HAS changed their dining car policy so that coach passengers now have the option of purchasing a meal in there a la carte, but only if there's room leftover after they make reservations for all the private car passengers. It's been way too pricey for us to to feel like it's worth it, but at least it's something.

Yes knowing where you want to go will certainly help you make a decision! The private rooms can get rather expensive so keep that in mind. It may make more sense to save money by sitting in coach and then splurge on a nicer hotel or dinner when you get where you're going!

We just went on the empire train to Seattle in coach and we’re able to purchase dinner in the traditional dining with a reservation but only when there was room after the sleeper cars were served. Thought it was funny when you said you would never leave sleeper car to go to observation car if you had a sleeper. That was kind of my thought too on my first, and only Amtrak trip 3 weeks ago (Coast Starlight-LA to Seattle). Got to my room to find out it is on the east side. Knew immediately I would be spending a lot of time in observation car. Turned out to be awesome. Met great people and had wonderful views. And now realize I also broke a couple of rules. (Oops😊)Did bring some adult beverages on board and took them to observation car on occasion. Also, took a dining car meal, that I'd had delivered to room, to observation car to eat. Not a soul seemed to care. All in all, a wonderful way to travel, relax, observe, and socialize.
@inthegreatwide
@inthegreatwide Год назад
One thing that Amtrak doesn't talk about enough is that you only get views out of 1 side of the train in your private room! I think there's a common misconception around that but I'm glad you had a great time in observation car! There were a number of rules that weren't regularly enforced, but none of them affected us in a negative way.

Another scintillating video, you two!😄 I mean it: great info!👍🏼 Unless you're traveling West to East, or East to West, I don't care much for Amtrak's food fare -- except for the mac 'n cheese.😋 Long-haul West-East / East-West Amtrak routes entitle sleeping-car passengers to scrumptious chef-prepared cuisine at tables with pretty settings. So, yeah, while riding Amtrak, I've brought a small cooler; I always bring a thermos of hot coffee and a thermos of cold water; I bring my own granola bars (less than $4 for a box of 12 on Amazon); for an early-morn departure train, I bring a bagel or empanada or breakfast burger that I had heated up at home and then wrapped in aluminum foil and then wrapped in a paper towel and then placed in a Ziploc pouch; and I always bring nuts that I'm not allergic to, raisins or dates; and iced-tea mix (in a portable container with a secure, press-down, pop-up dispenser) as a low-cost way of having a cold beverage in my hotel room. I also bring a mug -- but that's really for use in my hotel room. I feel that my mug helps keep the coffee or tea that I prepare in my hotel room, hot. A mug is also a good idea to use on the train. You can place your cupful of hot coffee (say, if you purchase it from the café car) *inside* your empty mug. That handy action, with your lid on your cup when you don't want to sip for a while, definitely will keep your coffee hot for some time. Regarding beverages of the alcoholic types, I don't like becoming tipsy on board because, for me, that could bring on motion sickness. I prefer to pack a variety pack of mini bottles of wine (purchased inexpensively in the wine & beer section of my neighborhood supermarket), and I place the wine in my hotel room's mini fridge. Thus, I only pack those variety packs in my luggage when I know that my hotel room actually has a mini fridge. If it's deep winter but the hotel room has no mini fridge, travelers can bring their wine (a few bottles or a variety pack) and keep them by the window(s). I can't vouch for that tip working with cans of beer. With regard to the quantity of wine & spirits one packs in luggage, please remember that if your Amtrak train will be traveling into Canada, there's a limit. I strongly recommend that you read the rules on the Canadian government's website in the border section. Same goes for your return trip to the States; please check the U.S. State Dept.'s website. For non-U.S. passengers on Amtrak, please visit the border sections of both the Canadian and U.S. government websites. No one wants an unpleasant surprise of having to pay duty simply because one failed to read about restrictions.

It's definitely more cost effective to bring your own food and use the cafe car as a last resort. It's not CRAZY expensive but it's definitely not good food for the prices. I would just pack a bag before I left, with a few sandwiches and snacks.....and then rough it,.....or go hungry. Between the cost,...and the quality of the food I wasn't interested,.......and I am not a '.'food snob''.I brought a few beers on with an ice pack,....and a bunch of liquor miniatures.I was always discreet,...and no one noticed,....or said a word.

The quality of the cafe car food could DEFINITELY be improved. From looking at the menu selections, it looks like the Northeast trains have better food than the cross-country trains in the west, which I think is ridiculous even when you consider that the Northeast trains are a lot more popular. They should have better options on the longer trains! We barely spent money in the cafe car on our trip; we mostly got coffee from them, but did eat 1 or 2 cheeseburgers/hot dogs on the really long routes. @@rhondaw6503 This looks like a great itinerary so far! You'll be taking 2 of our favorite routes: the Coast Starlight from LA to San Francisco (Emeryville) and the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Denver. Great choices! Just to make sure you know: there isn't a direct train from Tucson to San Diego or from San Diego to San Francisco. The Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle both travel the same route from Tucson to Los Angeles, but then you'll have to take the Pacific Surfliner down to San Diego. On the way from San Diego to San Francisco, you'll have to take the Pacific Surfliner from SD to LA, then the Coast Starlight from LA to Emeryville. From Emeryville, Amtrak offers a bus connection across the bridge into San Francisco proper, but it WILL cost you a leg off of your USA Rail Pass each way to take the bus. To save the extra legs, you can easily use other nearby public transit to get across the bridge. @@rhondaw6503 The cafe car attendant can provide you with a cup of hot water at no charge; that's what I do on the trains because I take my own chai tea, so that may or may not work depending on how much water you need. Technically speaking, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use something like that at your seat, because you'll have an outlet and a small tray table to fold down where you could place it. There are also outlets in the observation car (but not all routes have that) with larger tables that would offer more stability. The train rides can get bumpy at times, so that would be my greatest concern when heating up water because you don't want it to bounce and fall over, but I also have no idea what something like that looks like so maybe that's not an issue 🤷🏻‍♀

Can I take canned food like tuna, sardine and vegetable on the train ?? How about instant noodle Do they have hot water on the train ?
@inthegreatwide
@inthegreatwide 9 месяцев назад
Yes and yes 🙂 I wouldn't necessarily recommend taking canned fish on the train just out of respect to your fellow passengers because of the smell, but you can definitely bring canned foods. Just make sure you have a way to open it yourself and that it isn't something you need to heat up in order to eat. For the water, you can ask for a cup of hot water from the cafe car attendant, but I've only ever done so for tea, so I don't think that would be enough for a cup of noodles. I'm sure they could give it to you, but you should consider tipping them a dollar or two when you're asking for free stuff. It goes a long way!

@inthegreatwide

Hi Derek! We haven't done that, specifically, but I ask for a cup of hot water from the cafe car for tea (which I bring) every time we're on a long-haul train and they've always given it to me with no problem. I try to tip them a dollar or two depending on how often we go in there and how long the train ride is, especially if I'm just asking for free stuff (hot water, napkins, utensils, etc), and the attendant is always appreciative. I'm sure they would help you out if you did the same!

They used to allow coach passengers to pay for diner food. They did away with that during COVID, and I think in the process they laid off some waitstaff who they don't plan to rehire. When I travel on Amtrak I mostly buy either the hummus or the cheese & crackers from the cafe car. They are fairly decent and seem less overpriced than the entrees.

It sure would be nice if Amtrak offered dining car meals for a la carte purchase for coach car passengers, at least for Flexible Dining. I understand it may not be possible for Traditional Dining, but come on, how hard would it really be for the Flexible Dining menu?!

We have a sleeper Car to Florida can we buy water ??
@inthegreatwide
@inthegreatwide 11 месяцев назад
Yes! There is bottled water available at the cafe onboard the train, but there should also be water bottle-filling stations if you have your own bottle. Before you buy water bottles, ask your attendant if any are included for you since you have a sleeper car. Some trains offer soft drinks to be included for sleeper car passengers. You can also take bottled water on the train with you if you want. As a sleeper car passenger, you're able to take all of your own non-alcoholic AND alcoholic drinks onto the train, assuming you have space in your room to keep them. I hope that helps! Let us know how it goes or if you have other questions 🙂

So yesterday I picked up some people who just got off the Silverstar in Tampa. They told me they can only eat out of this café car. I just want to be clear about something. Are coach passengers no longer allowed to eat in the diner car? Even if you pay for your food? If so, this is not good because the café car was never intended to serve all the meals for coach passengers.
@inthegreatwide
@inthegreatwide Год назад
Hi Christopher! While we were riding the trains on our month-long trip in 2021, the café car was the only option for coach passengers. One of our followers recently told us that coach passengers can now pay individually for food from the dining car. We're taking another trip this summer so we can confirm!
@cdubois13
@cdubois13 Год назад
@@inthegreatwide I don’t suppose they said what route they were on did they? It almost sounds like they do things a little differently with dining on different routes even though they usually have the same café and dining cars. Are usually rode the silver service trains around Florida, but haven’t done so since Covid.
@inthegreatwide
@inthegreatwide Год назад
@@cdubois13 That person was riding the Empire Builder, which has Traditional Dining service in their dining car. Some routes offer what is called Flexible Dining in the dining car, so it's a different quality of food and style of service - much more casual. The cafe cars definitely differ by route; a lot of them feature a more regional menu. It may be that the Flexible and Traditional Dining routes are now offering meals to coach passengers at an additional cost, but they definitely were not during the pandemic. We'll be able to confirm about Traditional Dining on the Southwest Chief this summer.

@@user-wz4uv6cj6v Yes! We are working on a few new videos with Amtrak updates, and one of them is about how coach passengers are now able to eat in the dining car if they wish. @@user-wz4uv6cj6v Yes and yes. We took the Sunset Limited earlier this year (which in that section is the same train as the Texas Eagle) and they offered coach passengers the option to purchase a meal in the dining car, but they didn't state the price. From what we heard on another route, I would expect to pay ~$45/person. If you're looking for the experience of it, then go for it, but that's too much $ if you ask me. We took all of our own food. I tip when I'm sitting at a table and a waitperson brings my meal to me. I DO NOT TIP at McDonald's or any other place where I have to stand in line and order from a counter. I do not consider this to be "service." As for trains, I can't stand having to maintain my balance while going 80 mph while waiting in line. It's nothing short of BARBARIC. Maybe that's why you find so many fast food outlets in larger train stations. Just be sure to eat it at your seat. Amtrak cafe cars, like any other restaurants, doesn't allow you to eat food that you didn't buy there. All coaches have fold-out trays in the seat back in front of you, like on a plane.
