Angela Wells is a multidisciplinary Canadian artist who creates colorful impasto paintings. These 3D pieces of art are made by using palette knives and piping bags to layer acrylic paint.
Although there are many layers of paint, the mini sculptures dry perfectly, allowing the pieces to be moved or touched. In addition to mini canvas paintings, Angela does her impasto work on earrings and magnets.

If I were to do this, I probably wouldn't use acrylic paint as the base. Air dry clay + paint/pigment + a thinner would work for cheaper.

@@monkeybearmax You're right, acrylic paints for 2D paintings alone take minutes to dry. For 3D textures like in this video, all you gotta do is add a gel medium which extends the waiting time to a few days depending on how thick it is. I swear the people in these comments only use oil paints or something...

@@knightobreath yes, the people can get cuts The paintings that either don't have a background (the 3d cake) , ade more 3d and soft looking (the corn is a good example, same with ice cream cone) are safer, and ones with backgrounds could be lightly sanded reducing the risk or get rid of the risk entirely And more 3d style painting can just be sanded where it's sharp as I already mention So I see your point and I might have a solution

How in the world is it a waste of paint when she's making art? Acrylics are supposed to be like that. The charm of Acrylics is they are 3d. You can feel it. Touch it. I'd say they made every drop of that acrylic paint worth it.

I would also argue embroidery: it uses a lot of thread for the purpose of art, which could have been used for clothes, bags, stuffed toys, etc. not typically expensive tho depending on what type of floss you buy and how much

Reminds me of how Wayne Theabaud (or however his name is spelled) would use pastry knives to apply paint on top his pies and cakes paintings. The impasto texture and chroma on these food paintings are way too stimulating for me, but I can understand how they can be appealing to people. If I were to do make these kind of paintings myself, I add a bit of neutralizing color, like a warm brown, to each of the colors to make them look less intense, and the paint's body no thicker than what's out the tube.

I've been frustrated with the lack of 3d element my drawings have - they only work if you look at them from certain angles, which is an inherent shortcoming with paper. But, you can still put so much more onto paper than you can in sculpture or 3d pens or anything like that - this has given me a little insight into a potential way to give me that real-world depth I want in art. Thanks!

I was gonna cry if that was oil paints, thank goodness it's acrylic. That would have been SO expensive if it was oil paint. Honestly it's pretty interesting what you can do with it, and I never thought of it being a sculptural medium before

You can also do impasto techniques with oil paint. Either way you just need a thickener. That way it's cheaper bc you don't waste pure product
