One of the catchy jingles from my childhood that I remember. Heard this all the time on WPAT in the late 80s/early 90s - I recorded this commercial from Z100 in 1997. The Food Emporium pictured (now closed) is the one on East 51st Street my parents used to shop at when I was a baby.

If you grew up in the tristate area in the 80s/90s this theme is embedded in your mind

And even into the 00s they kept airing this jingle, I very much remember hearing this jingle quite a few times in my teenage years of the 00s. :D

This is quite honestly the greatest of jingles. So emotional. It makes you not only want to shop at Food Emporium but fall in love with it.

I remember being a kid in the 90s sitting in the car with my grandmother and listening to this jingle with her. She passed away 3 years ago. This brings back happy memories.

Great memory! When I was a kid in the late '80s and early '90s, after we moved out of the city we listened to WPAT, WNEW (AM) or WFAN in my dad's 1984 Honda Civic.

@@tapesfromtheradio Hell yeah! Same to you as well. I've been in jamaica queens since i was born and moved to LI when i was 10. I remember hearing this jingle from my toddler years towards the end of 2001 throughout the main streets of queens. Now, strolling from the streets of Queens bvld to Hillside ave to Broadway has gotten me nostalgic imagining all the rnb, pop and disco, Z100 and 1010 wins my dad played back in those days. The food emporium lyric has echoed in my head for so long, this recording's got me singing it everyday reminding me of innocent times.

This store was a legend for me, a kid raised in Queens in the 90's who had never stepped foot in or even seen a Food Emporium until his 20's, because of these radio jingle ads. The ads made Food Emporium seem like the greatest gourmet market ever. They say never to meet your heroes, because alas, Food Emporium in reality turned out to be just another crappy overpriced Manhattan supermarket like Gristedes or Morton Williams.
@tapesfromtheradio
@tapesfromtheradio 4 года назад
Agreed, it was more a marketing gimmick than anything else. Once FreshDirect arrived in the early 2000s we switched to ordering groceries online. That was the best alternative to the crappy Manhattan grocery stores at the time. Now at least there are Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Aldi and Costco in the city to compete with the old school stores.

@@tapesfromtheradio In Queens, I was mainly familiar with Key Food and Waldbaums as a kid. Imagine my dismay when I first walked into a Food Emporium and saw the same dirty tile floors and box packaging strewn haphazardly along the aisles. 😑 It makes sense nowadays, of course, since Key Food has owned Food Emporium for a bit less than a decade. Morton Williams is probably the cleanest and neatest of the traditional Manhattan supermarkets, but they're fairly expensive. IMO, all of them are sort of like convenience stores close by to the nearby apartments, and are often priced as such. I mean, where else do you get charged for lettuce by the lb and not by the head? I remember my brother used to get Fresh Direct quite a bit around 2010 because they were competitive on price in Manhattan. I don't think he orders from there much anymore, though they're clearly still doing great business in the city. Trader Joe's is a great place for single workers and families in need of a quick cheap frozen dinner and other foods. I like it a lot. Whole Foods has become more price-accessible ever since Amazon bought them. And Costco is awesome for cheap bulk items if you have the apartment space, though you have to deal with only one city location and a bunch of inconvenient outerboro locations. I'm interested in checking out the Wegmans by the Navy Yard one day.

Food Emporium advertised heavily on cable superstation WOR TV 9, this jingle was heard nationwide because of that fact, even though they were only a NYC based chain. I grew up in the south and heard it often on WOR TV.

I bet I have the most interesting story about this jingle. I have never been to New York-never even set foot in the state. I used to hear this song on 1010 WINS, the all news radio station in NY, from all the way in Nova Scotia, Canada, several hundred miles from NY. I could only pick it up while driving my car, and only at night. It made me want to go to New York and see one of these stores. I also really enjoyed the WINS traffic reports of all the NY bridges and tunnels. My town in NS has only 600 people, so stuff like that was unheard of to me. I now live in Vancouver, BC-much further away from New York than before. But I'll get there someday, after all this Covid BS is finished. Right now they don't even let us cross the border for gas.

Great story! I love Canada - was just in Vancouver a little over a year ago for business and recorded some radio stations there. I have always wanted to visit Nova Scotia. Hopefully in 2021 when the borders reopen.

@@tapesfromtheradio Vancouver is where I live now. It's a far-Leftist hell hole compared to beautiful Nova Scotia. Go see it before the Communists take away all of our travel rights (assuming we ever get back what's left of them).
