Bowdoin College and Vassar College are two elite private schools that compete for the same students. But one of those schools is trying hard to address the problem of rich and poor in American society-and paying a high price. The other is making that problem worse-and reaping rewards as a result.
“Food Fight,” the second of the three-part Revisionist History miniseries on opening up college to poor kids, focuses on a seemingly unlikely target: how the food each school serves in its cafeteria can improve or distort the educational system.
Season 1 (2016)

ABOUT REVISIONIST HISTORY
Revisionist History is Malcolm Gladwell’s journey through the overlooked and the misunderstood. Every podcast episode re-examines something from the past - an event, a person, an idea, even a song - and asks whether we got it right the first time. Because sometimes the past deserves a second chance.

Vassar needs to continue focusing on providing the best educations for a wide economic demographic. As far as providing an improved cafeteria/food experience, Vassar could just look about 15 minutes down the road to the top notch Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and ask their students to work in the Vassar kitchen as interns, that would probably provide some increased quality and variety in the Vassar kitchens.

Additionally, have Vassar develop some ag classes for urban farming to actually source local produce. If they simply replace goofy ornamental with fruit trees, ground covers that are squash and tomatoes edged with lettuces... Sounds like they aren't really very educated to me.

Wait. This is wrong. The problem is not a lack of marginal dollars, it's a lack of imagination. Vassar is between upstate NY and New Jersey, the breadbasket of the North East. Vassar has more access to locally sourced material than Bowdoin could dream of. They are a few hours from Cornell hotel school. If Vassar exercised some ingenuity, they could improve the dining experience without having to spend money on gourmet ingredients.

This is well researched and executed . The solution is more nuanced and complex than rich kids choosing schools like Vassar . The problems in America or anywhere in the world are the similar .

Give me a break...I bet anything that if the chef from Bowdoin were to "transfer" to Vassar, that the quality and presentation of food would greatly improve without using any additional resources. I am very disappointed in the "zero sum game" analysis by Malcolm.

How about toughening up these spoilt kids for their own good. Self indulgence is bad for you. Suffering together would also bond students..

Im curious to know if the education experience at boden (too lazy to check the spelling on that) is inferior to that of vasar, or if their efforts towards providing exception quality food also extends to their classroom experience. The lever of this argument rests on the fulcrum of who provides the overall best college experience. Suggesting that rich families should pay for their child to goto a school with subpar dormitories offering less in the way of amenities and eat poorly, even dangerously (not in the fun and sultry johnny dangerously way but in the sense you might later pass a staple) for 4 years, all so that poor smart kids can get an essentially free education is a proposal only an altruist among altruists could get excited about.
