Hi Ben, Great video! What was your seed mixture composition (% winter wheat, % crimson clover)/seeding rate? Also, in my experience, winter wheat doesn't roller crimp as well as winter rye, which is why I prefer winter rye. Just wondering your thoughts? Thank you, Pat
Nice looking food plot. Last year I used Buckwheat , them spread Brassica blend into it then rolled and sprayed. Worked pretty good. Is that what your gonna do?
Great video Ben, wondering when and how are you terminating this crop? Are you planting / broadcasting the brassica then spraying the wheat and clover or are you crimping it? Also the seed rate is the per acre? Thanks for the videos and keep them coming!
Ill leave standing until the wheat is all gone. Should be August time or so right in time for planting and then broadcast a brassica mix in this situation and spray as needed for additional weeds but as thick as this is I'm not anticipating much weed issues. As for crimping I don't have the budget for a crimper. However if needed I can use a cultipacker and then spray the crushed vegetation. Its similar to crimping effectiveness. Think that covered the questions you had keep em coming glad to help.
I’m planning to plant a .25acre plot of clover and chicory mix. After that, I’m adding winter rye. When do you suggest planting the rye and when do you suggest knocking it down? Should I use a weed eater or grass spray? I could also roll it with a packer.. Thoughts?
Steve thanks for checking it out glad you enjoyed the video really appreciate the support and if you have any questions or want to see anything specifical covered in a video let me know!
I have some wheat on half and rye on half 1/4 acre each that’s coming up from last fall. Central NY. What do you recommend I do? Can I seed right into it in late summer and roll and spray?
@erokjenkins Thanks for checking out the video it's a good question for sure unfortunately I can't give you a definite answer. Lots of factors would play into this decision. What equipment you have access to. What the plan or goal is with the plot for this season. Future soil requirements from soil test. Problem weeds or other plot issues. My email is otc.management@yahoo.com we can discuss further and we can pick it apart.
This plot was winter wheat. So I just let it stay till the deer ate all the seed heads. You can terminate a rye crop by using clethodim herbicide or mowing when the rye is in the dough stage. Any other questions just let me know. Thanks for checking it out 👍
@oltincuphabitat I appreciate that a lot. I'll probably make you regret it lol but I'm getting serious about food plots for the first time and the more I learn the more questions I have. Great video btw 👍
