Food Storage: How to Extend the Shelf Life of Nuts and Seeds

I'm a huge fan of nuts and seeds so it makes sense to include them in my prepper pantry. However, nuts and seeds tend to have a short shelf life due to the healthy fats that they contain.
In this video, I'll show you how I extend the shelf life of nuts and seeds by storing them in a low oxygen environment in a cool location.
*We used Wallaby oxygen absorbers that are conveniently packaged in bags of 10 to ensure freshness. You can check out Wallaby Mylar bags at bit.ly/3fmgEqD. Use the promo code PROVIDENT5 for $5 off.

Hi Kylene, i have a question... which nuts/seeds are considered too high in oils to use an oxygen absorber on safely? because all i was ever told was not to use an O2 absorber on "oily" foods because of botulism... but i think maybe i misunderstood what that meant! I would really love to be able to extend more of the storage life of my seeds and nuts because i also should be eating far more things like that... Maybe the reason it is ok to use O2 absorbers with nuts and seeds is because the oil in them has not been extracted. In other words, the oils in them are still part of the structure of the nut or seed. Other oily foods they have said not to use the O2 absorbers with were foods that had oil as an ingredient in them. I am guessing, but does that make sense?

Hi Kylene and Jonathan! I have learned SO, SO, SO much from your videos and website (and I will continue to learn!). I've learned so much that I don't consider myself a "newbie" anymore. My prepper pantry is growing rapidly and so is my peace of mind. One topic that I am NOT 100% certain of and 100% TERRIFIED of is..BOTULISM! I want to understand it completely so I am confident that it is NOT invited into my long term storage. I have a pretty good understanding of it with "wet" canning and reasons behind pressure canning vs. water bath. But I am lacking in understanding dry food storage. I understand the why behind boiling as a safe guard, but some dry foods (nuts as an example) aren't something I would boil? Do you have a video about this? If not, could you make one? Thanks :)

@@TheProvidentPrepper - Hi :) It is my understanding that Oxygen Absorbers and/or Vacuum Sealing DOES prevent moisture because moisture is H2O. And so without the O there can be no H2O. Now having said that... Oxygen Absorbers and/or Vacuum Sealing will get rid of over 99% of the oxygen, But there IS still a tiny bit of oxygen remaining which can eventually be a problem in the long run.
@gman21266
@gman21266 2 года назад
@@TheProvidentPrepper I'll do my best to explain my understanding of it: 1) Cooking the beans above 170 degrees for 5 or 10 minutes will kill any botulinum bacteria. However, that won't kill the botulinum spores. (But the spores aren't usually a problem for healthy adults). Now having said that... Oxygen absorbers will draw the oxygen out of air. But not out of liquids/foods. Vacuum sealing moist beans will extend the shelf life, but not by a whole lot. Maybe 3 or 4 times longer. But definitely not years and years, unless frozen. 2) Like many people, I keep my spare oxygen absorbers in a sealed mason jar. And sure enough, the next day I can see little droplets of liquid on the inside of the jar. So what gives??? How is there little droplets of H2O if over 99 percent of the O has been absorbed into the packets?? The only answer is that those droplets are not H2O. The droplets are liquified nitrogen due to the pressure drop. I hope this helps. 😁

I would open them and smell them. They will smell rank if they went rancid which I doubt. I keep nuts in jars and bags in the freezer and pantry and they are fine, taste great! I didn't think you were supposed to use oxygen absorbers with nuts because of the high fat content? So it's ok to seal in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers?

I thought you said you can't use oxygen absorbers in nuts because they are not less than 10% moisture?

Kylene, just watched another video where you also showed pumpkin seed storage and you stated never to use an O2 in the jar, However, here you just showed you added an O2 to a jar of pumpkin seeds? I'm confused can you put O2 in with nuts for LT storage???

@@TheProvidentPrepper I am confused, this link specifically listed nuts as not suitable for long term storage (listed under dry goods with either too much moisture, oils or other concerns) I really really want to store nuts and seeds this way, but this provided link does not support this. Is there additional information you have come across?

Oh my--on another channel they said NEVER use oxygen absorbers with nuts---botulism possibility.

I find covering my nuts in chocolate protects them from oxygen and moisture. I protect my chocolate from going white by only getting chocolate with the hard glossy outer shells. LOL. I laugh, but I am kinda only half joking.

I still feel somewhat confused. I really need to know specifically. I put oxygen absorbers in mason jars with walnuts and reused jars were used to store planters peanuts also with oxygen absorbers. The peanuts are regular, not dry roasted so they do have oil. Also, I stored craisins in a reused jar where I also used oxygen absorbers. I packaged them between this past November and December 2023. Should I leave them? Should I throw them away or repackage them and use only mason jars and vacuum seal them. I would so appreciate your advice on this. Thank you!

All of the items you mentioned are short term storage items. I wouldn't throw them away because it has only been a few months. Reused jars may be just fine as long as they are air tight. You can check moisture content of foods here fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/174262/nutrients I can't specifically advise you but understand that items that are good candidates for long term storage in a reduced oxygen environment are less than 10 percent moisture and low in fat. The beef jerky you purchase in the store almost always has an oxygen absorber in it. However it is only intended for short term storage.

@TheProvidentPrepper Would you please advise on storing dehydrated nuts long term. I have soaked them (walnuts and almonds) and dehydrated for 12-24 hrs till crisp and dry. Can I vacuum seal these nuts in mason jars with moisture absorber? I am trying to put away for baking Pantry in a shtf situation. Will this be a safe option? I really appreciate your response as I can't find any information on this.

No, you should be fine. The concern is with cooked foods like granola and high fat foods.
