I never understood why people buy milk, bread, and eggs when power might go out for a good 2 weeks. I stock up on canned goods and rice and I'll usually get crackers and peanut butter as well since they'll last longer and don't need refrigeration. I have a gas stove, so I can cook without electricity, but it's also good to have things that don't need water or heat just in case

I think it's just a matter of what we consider "staple foods" here in America. When we hear we need to stock up, we consider the basics of our normal routine diets, not whether or not they'd outlast the storm. Panic normally triumphs over logic in these kinds of cases, just like putting water on a gas fire. We think of "the bare essentials" without considering of we'd need to change our typical diet. I'm pretty sure if Rice and Beans were our main staple foods, those would be what would sell out and we wouldn't even consider the fact that they're the actual scientific choice cuz they don't spoil.

@TheWizardMus I guess, but I've lived my whole life on the coast where we get hurricanes and it still never made sense to me. If you have eggs laid by chickens, rather than from the supermarket, your eggs will stay fresh at room temperature for weeks because of the bloom. As long as the bloom of the egg isn't scrubbed off, the pores in the egg remain closed, keeping bacteria out.

The reason highly perishable items like milk, eggs, or raw meats are often "sold out" leading up to hurricanes is because grocery stores generally stop ordering items like that in the days before a storm hits. It's not that people are over buying those items, those things just don't get ordered again until the store knows it's safe and has power to stock them.

Didn't know fish could actually be "cooked" with lemons. Our power outages don't last more than a few days out here (they're either caused by temporary bad weather or rolling blackouts in the summer), so we usually just load up the fridge with frozen bottles of water and eat things that aren't refrigerated. We have 2 grills, one propane and one charcoal, so cooking things is only slightly more finicky since it's outside.

It's so weird that Americans keep their eggs in the fridge. In Europe, the shells aren't scrubbed and sanitized, so they can be kept at room temperature for as long as two weeks. And our butter is made with unpasteurized milk, so it can also be stored at room temperature.

Butter easily last two weeks in room temperature if its in a sealed container, even longer when salted. So knäckebröd - thin dried bread and butter will get you by easily. Even better if you dont buy supermarket eggs - can last weeks outside. Though anyone stocking up on fridge items to begin with got a few screws loose, when canned foods exist.

Grew up in appalachia, growing up many of us in the higher elevations would get snowed in for a few days and most of that would come with power outages. For the cold stuff, you can have coolers outside... but if you go to the store? People buy up all the milk and bread for some reason. I've always kept dry good loaded in the pantry and the freezer packed, so it'll hold temp longer and I can just start cooking a bunch if it's necessary. This is why I don't want electric appliances. I can control how much gas and/or firewood on hand, I can't control the power.

My mind rolled when you said eggs, milk, and bread. I stopped drinking milk because it goes bad so fast. Almond milk last a week at least. And almond milk can be bought shelf stable. I barely buy bread, because it doesn’t last in a one person apartment. Although when I do, I buy only two days worth and leave in on the counter. Hate the taste of cold bread. And eggs? I haven’t eaten eggs for two years because of the short time it has. I finally learned you can freeze scrambled eggs, but like how? The smallest is like 12 large eggs, and cooking that all up and storing it last me months. How many people are eating how many eggs for you to be fine with buying them? "bread... one of the first things to go bad"... what?! shelf-stable breads, which are by far the most popular in the US, last weeks to months -- absolutely not one of the first to go. Fresh bread definitely isn't good emergency food, but it still lasts 4 or more days (albeit unpalatably stale), and most of the things people would keep in a fridge would spoil within that time if the fridge temperature could not be maintained.

Eggs in the USA get washed and sanitized before being packaged and sent to stores. This removes the thin natural protective cuticle layer and exposes the shell's pores to potential contamination. If an egg that has been refrigerated is later left out, condensation on the outside of the egg can facilitate bacterial growth and movement into the egg.

Watching this made me wonder....Is there such a thing as ultra-pasteurized or shelf-stable milk over in the US? Here in Germany we call it H-Milch (H standing for "haltbar", basically meaning long lasting). It doesn't need to be stored in the fridge if unopened and lasts a long time. So technically it would be possible to stock up on milk without it going bad quickly.

yeah, i know there's at least plant milks that i buy (i can't digest milk without getting really smelly) that stay good for years at room temp as long as they're unopened. there's gotta be regular milks like that too

Keeping bread or eggs in the fridge seems like an American thing so keeping them out for a few days because of an outage wont necessarily make them go bad all that faster. Especially if you have a large family those items will definitely be gone before they have the chance to spoil.

Day 3 of asking: This is kinda random but if every time someone litters it’s poisoning a turtle or something so can u calculate how many dolphins/turtles a person has poisoned? (Idk if this is food theory or not😅)
