This is the first part of a 2 part series on the treatment for foot drop. This video demonstrates exercises to strength the muscles on the front of the leg that are responsible for lifting the foot. This is a good place to start if you are someone who is catching your foot on the ground or notice that you have an abnormal walking pattern. Strengthening this area will also improve safety, build walking confidence and improve your overall independence.

#footdrop Hi from the UK your definition of foot drop where the foot is floppy is exactly what I have in both feet I was diagnosed with a genetic neuropathy and have worn AFO’s for 25 years (I’m 48)which has led to severe calf muscle wastage and very little movement in my feet and ankles so many exercises to help strengthen my feet and ankles I cannot do but the closed chain exercise with the towel I can do so any similar exercises you could suggest would be very appreciated many thanks.

@@allanparkins8142 I will post more (different) videos for this condition. I think what you are describing is idiopathic peripheral neuropathy? Not sure but sounds similar. Unfortunately had you NOT used braces, you would have other issues at this point. But yes, the down side is, you might see some atrophy in the calf.

First of all I want to thank you Dr. Tobias . May God bless you on all that you do for you are a big help for person like me who are desperately looking for a solution to a problem like this. I’ve been watching your videos for quite sometime and I would say that my problem is a combination of a foot drop, mild and severe spasticity as far as I understood your explanations. So what I do is to gather all those exercises for certain problem and do it simultaneously. But I also have numbness and heaviness on both of my legs. I think you have videos on that as well. I will definitely search for it. One day at a time. Thank you again. More power to you. Praying for my healing and all of your followers. 🙏🙏🙏

My first indication of foot drop occurred when I was at a symphony rehearsal been caught my right foot into a wedge on the stage. I fell and my instrument which was my viola went flying across the stage. after that I was falling all the time without giving me warning. I took my problem to the spine surgeon who performed lumbar Fusion. I was in a brace for a year. I then started physical therapy and they taught me how to walk. It appears after surgery then I had drop foot, so these exercises really help a lot. I can only hope and pray this drop foot nonsense will stop. After my fall with my viola it turns out that my Viola is fine thank goodness I am hoping and praying for any response.

Another great video. I had a terrible hemhorragic stroke after a brain tumor removal surgery . I learned to walk, but I have foot drop, and also have spasticity. Every time I take a step with my used to be paralyzed left foot my toes hit the ground. In addition, I also have a rolling ankle , and a knee that is popping backwards, but I am walking without an Afo now. Hopefully the exercises that you are showing in the videos will be helpful and Soon I will be able to walk better . Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hi zita , if your insurance could cover an AFO made for you from a mold, it would correct all those problems at once. It has like a long metal piece at The back that may not make you feel comfortable fashion wise but your knee no longer pops back, no drop foot. gabapentin 300-600mg works magic for spasticity. Hope this works for you.

This is by far the best description of what I am experiencing with foot drop / spasticity following spinal surgey 2 years ago. That "pause" and my inability to step through without thinking hard about lifting my foot hits the nail on the head. Walking is more mentally exhasuting than it is physically - so much so that I find cycling easier (although the spasticity in my calf and my foot pointing downwards can be debilitating). Thank you!

Hello Tara, many thanks for this great content ! I have a herniated disc in L4-L5 and after reading all the comments I have not found that people have a similar issue. In fact, I have a problem that my heel cannot raise all my foot up, just one side with the big toe, but totally I cannot raise my foot on the right heel. Do you know if it is spacticity ? I think it is L4 herniation that is pressing on peroneal nerve. Do you know what can be done because I can walk but I have pain in the hallus valgus a lot. Thank you.
