If the man was working for Marcus then that makes him a part of the movement. If he was following Marcus then he was a part of the movement. If he was taught by Marcus then he was a Garveyite.

Foota, there is no disrespect in saying Howell , and not Marcus started the Rastafari movement. Marcus saw His Majesty as a leader politically and not spiritually. When Marcus said 'look to the east for your King', he was saying that the black man should find leadership in his own black king and not on the Monarchy in England. It was Howell who made the spiritual connection to Selassie. Foota, don't be too quick to be aggressive on subjects you do not fully grasp. One Love.
And another thing, people must've forgot that, when Marcus Garvey was deported back to Jamaica the people treated him terrible, and shamed him. It took almost 70 years for people to give him any credit. He was not looked at as no hero or great leader.
Foota , get your timeline right. Garvey was deported to Jamaica in 1927 and moved to England in 1935. Howell started the movement in 1933 whilst Garvey was still in Jamaica

Great display of how Africans should handle having a different opinion from your brother or sister, they were both passionate and yet remained mindful of their oneness. Though I am a bald head, as a Pan-African nationalist, I'd always give respect to both ancestors, Howell and Garvey for their sterling works. It's not for me to focus on whose contribution was more or less, I believe each finger is important to the carrying of the burden of African liberation and prosperity worldwide. Every organized form of spirituality is to be used for our self improvement and guide us in dealing with every human being with the respect life afforded each and every one of us, African and all others. We have Africans involved in every organized spiritual group, while I'd like to remind us all that Christianity, Islam and Judaism all started in Africa, what has happened since their birth has been the misrepresentation of them by other groups of peoole(Dr. Joseph Ben Yochanan, Dr. John Henrik Ckarke). They have since lacked the humanity that it seems only Africans posses, we are mankind's first people and therefore were made with a special connection to spirituality that no other group of people has. We are a collective people, meaning we work better within a culture that embraces group centered activities instead of this selfish and individualistic way of life we see being promoted and taking over our society gradually. Our problems are as a result of us not knowing what best fits us and that can be learned from a knowledge of our history before being invaded by foreigners on the continent of Africa. We have never been told anything that would help us to get back to who we truly are since invasion, colonization, slavery and neo-slavery by our conquerors and slave masters.

Marcus was also critical of Selassie for not getting the assistance of his fellow African family members while fighting against Mussolini. There were Africans in the States who were eager to fight on behalf of their Motherland, which wasn't at the time a common term and they would refer to regions or countries then. So, they were willing to go and fight for Abyssinia(Ethiopia), even if it would cost them their life in the service to their brothers and sisters on the continent. Sadly, the American government refused to allow them to offer their service but were very welcoming to allow the Italians living in America to go and fight for Italy against Ethiopia.
Reason Marcus Garvey denied His Majesty Haile Selassie as being the black king in which he so called "prophesied" about, is because Marcus Garvey was repeating a prophesy that he'd got from the African princess of Ghana Laura Adorka Koffi. Look her up. And he did not acknowledge his majesty because that was not his prophesy and he was unaware of whom she spoke......
