The Yankee concept is a two-man route concept that is primarily used out of run-heavy formations to attack single-high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3. It’s a deep shot play that puts the middle field defender in conflict with a deep over route and a post behind it.

AJ Brown's bread and butter right here - love the concise and informative breakdowns, keep them coming!

He made an absolute killing on this and it'll only get deadlier with Julio out there. Having Derrick Henry suck up the LBs doesn't hurt either

An oldie but a goodie concept.

With how shaky pass protection can be in the league these days, I don't know why some teams are so insistent on getting 5 eligible receivers out in the pass attack so often when they can dial up more 2 or 3 man pass concepts. Or maybe I'm wrong about how often that happens. I'd figure in a situation like this, unless the linebackers green dog blitz, you get the numbers advantage in pass protection while the linebackers are momentarily caught in "no man's land".

I think most of it just comes down to offensive philosophy and identity. Some OCs want lots of options to get the ball out faster to combat pressure and blitz looks. Some want to load up and work play action and use 2 or 3 man concepts. Ideally there's a blend and coordinators would adapt, but play-action is definitely under utilized at the NFL level. Only issue is that if the linebackers don't bite, you can be dead in the water if there's no underneath or short options.

The tight formation is or used to give away this concept but now there have been years of route and run concepts executed from these tight formations the "yankee" concept is far less predictable and a great way to expose a defense predicated on snuffing out rub routes and/or short yardage run plays.

@@WeeklySpiral That's true regarding the ideal blend. I just think leaving an obvious five blockers on each play leaves you more vulnerable to overload pressures, bad matchups, and the stunt game, so the less or more balanced use of it leaves your QB in a better spot. True on the linebackers not biting too on the play action, that's why I think for this concept a check-and-release from a tight end or running back has to be put in.

@@EricA-kl7by True. I figured a guy like McVay especially when he used a bunch of condensed formations a couple years ago benefited from this. Multiple plays out of fewer formations or with added window dressing with motions and shifts.

What would be a good defense to contain this? I appreciate your work and thank you..

Disciplined linebackers and safeties or a spin call from the dig-side corner. As soon as his receiver goes into the dig, he can spin up to help cover the post which allows the safety to jump down on the dig. Usually the formation forces defenses into 1-high looks so you're a little limited with either Cover 1 or Cover 3.

Would the traditional Post-Dig fall into this category?

Post-dig on the same side of the field is usually called a Mills concept with a drag from the opposite side. Yankee is pretty specific to needing the dig and post on opposite sides
