I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

if you're just getting into jig fishing and i usually always have my little 7 year old daughter with me who just wants to have what i have tied on on hers too would you recommend a casting jig or swimming jig? i know she doesn't have the patience for a football head and am thinking she may even get bored with the casting jig lol. i'm in the south i live on lake logan martin and the one public fishing area on the whole lake is pretty pressured but i consistently get bites if i throw something they aren't used to seeing such as the hover rig has been killing it for me (thanks for that one) but i was just curious as to what your stance may be or some tips to help me keep her interest in fishing as i'm really enjoying teaching her as i learn new things as well from your channel

I've noticed line tie positioning of any style jig makes a huge difference when fishing different types of cover. Unfortunately I've lost alot of jigs trying to figure out what degree line tie works best where. I'd be really interested in you going into detail on this. Also your take on tungsten vs lead. I've come to prefer tungsten for both better sensitivity and it being much smaller profile. I can sometimes even hear my tungsten jig heads come into contact with rock bottoms.... it seems to give me a much more hightened sense of what my bait is doing. Thanks so much for all you do! Love your channel!!!! 👍🏻

Man I got tired of having to have multiple jigs tied on. I like to fish deep stumps and rocks. I also like to skip docks often in the same day. I started do both with the same jig and I don't see any difference in the amount of bites or the hook up. The one I use is arky head with a heavy duty hook

arkie is a great all around jig that i would consider a casting jig.

@@MattStefanFishing I just found YOUR video about 11 months ago called "jig fishing 101". I re-watched it and it Answered a lot of my questions. I thought in one of your videos I heard you say that the perpendicular tie combination with a particular head, hops the jig over branches easier. Do you recall what head style you were referring to?

What's best use of horizontal line-tie?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
generally a horizontal line tie is made for fishing wood and a vertical is for grass. On a football it doesnt make as big of a difference in my opinion as to line tie direction.

I mainly fish Florida ponds and small lakes since I don’t have a boat to take out. I’ve caught a few larger bass on a swim jig with a trailer, but I guess my question is can I still fish a casting jig from shore say a 7/16 Dirty Jig w/ trailer?

@@MattStefanFishing Matt thanks for the reply! I’m not sure that you would call what is on the bottom “grass” lol you hit the nail on the head that every pond seems to have snot grass down there. I’ve also noticed a lot of the ponds down here don’t have natural “cover” and seem to just be open. Any tips for fishing those successfully?

@@kenmartin7129 I think a swim jig is primarily for imitating a baitfish and you primarily swim it, mostly higher up in the water column. A casting jig is meant to hop off of the bottom.

@1965JB
@1965JB Год назад
@@kenmartin7129 The main difference is the shape of the head. Swim jigs have “pointier” heads to help them swim through weeds. There’s also probably something in the design of the head that makes it easier to keep it higher in the water column, but I’m not 100% sure. I’ve always been confused by the term “casting jig” because we cast all of them, but it’s starting to make more sense to me.

Right now and every winter on my home lake which is 90% Rock Banks we throw a football head jig on our bluff wall Banks matter of fact we pitch it to the Buffalo bank and then Cascade it down the side of the bluff cuz we have a ton of boulders and big chunk Rock on our banks so we don't get away with a casting jig very much one of my favorite things to do in the winter time is pitch a football jig a jewel baits heavy cover finesse football jig to be exact down bluff wallbanks. I've been surprised how well the little micro football jigs have worked for me. I just started fishing jigs this season really- I mean I fished them before but I didn't catch much on them and never could get myself to stick with it. But the little micro fb jigs got bit so often and so easily they helped me build enough confidence to keep me engaged and fishing different jigs until I figured out how to apply the different styles and be somewhat successful. The little keitech jig was what i started out with but, the Pee Wee by Jewel has turned out to be my favorite probably. Nishine also makes a good one, and missile baits- they've all worked great but the Pee Wee is least expensive. I pair them with a baby paca chunk or a 4' double tail grub. I love pitching jigs but, downsizing there doesn't seem to work as well for me. I throw the little Canterbury compact casting jig but it's quite a bit larger than the little micro jigs.

Nice, good reasoning using the percentage of bottom contact and weedlessness desired. I've not figured out when a football jig is better than a shaky head in the winter on the fluctuating highland reservoirs I fish, I usually use the football jig on rockier more vertical areas and the shaky head on more gentle inclines. Maybe this is wrong.
