Thank you for this great video. I am a hardcore FM fan since 2010 and even if I was aware of everything you said, it was a pleasure to listen to this while playing FM.
No 5. quote: "computer is gonna work you out". FM is based on expert system that makes decision based on implemented rules, but there is no mechanism that could 'adjust' to your tactic. It is true that with time it could be harder to play with a particular tactic, because if you are consistent and successful, the computer will be maybe more cautious and your tactic works better against more attacking strategies. Also, there is no golden tactic that could exploit the match engine so that you will win everything with one setup. You need to tweak your tactic during the season and also during the match, but is up to you how big the changes will be. But nevertheless I agree that one need some backup tactic, it is always better to have plan B :)
FM16 is basically the precursor to Skynet. it reads your emails and facebook page and learns your tactics to use against you. That's the only reason for losing that i can think of? But yes as I said in the video there is no one tactic that works forever, however if you tweak a tactic over time you can extend its lifetime
thx a lot 4 the advice!!! started playing the game yesterday & i chose to manage Manchester United....starting to feel the pressure but im confident that i can thrive on it!!!
Great introductory tutorial... Perfect for beginners like myself breaking into the franchise for the first time. Thanks a lot for this information...very informative and very well described. Thanks a lot. Respect 👍👌🤟
Hey mate, just wanted to say cheers quickly. Brilliant video and brilliant channel. Very informative and clearly learned after a fair amount of experience. I've put 250 hours into FM15 (saw it on Steam cheap). After many frustrating seasons with various clubs, I think i've learned enough to commit to one save long term. My only major issue that I can't solve is players being pillaged. I have great man management (19) but I haven't yet been able to convince a player to stay after interest creeps in from bigger clubs. Any suggestions? My first season with Leicester, managed to make 7th, after being picked as relegation contenders. Yet Kante, Vardy and Mahrez all decided they wanted to leave to play Champions League? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Cheers man and again, good job. The channel will grow soon enough :)
+JoePlays Many thanks and to answer your question I would recommend trying to be proactive about it so if you have a player who you know is playing well and is going to be a star but has attracted interest then sign him up on a long contract around december even if he has a few seasons left on a current one and if possible put as large a minimum release clause in his contract as you can to deter interest. If a bid comes in and you reject it and its below the asking price i usually find saying that you are holding out for a fair price works with the player. however check out the personality of the player involved, if they are volatile they may react badly to this. sometimes you can also convince them to stay for another season but thats tougher with older players. The final option is to straight out say no, if the player is under contract then that is an option, they will probably react badly to this and may take a while to repair relations but i find that if you start winning a few games they will often come back to you and ask to be taken off the transfer list but its risky. Otherwise I would just try and get as much money as possible for them, always think ahead, if you think a player is attracting interest then line up a replacement as soon as possible, then you will have months to scout possible replacements, if you leave it too late you may not be able to scout them as much and end up with a dud. hope this helps and good luck!
+JP Play Cheers mate, will try that! Also, just another quick one. Is there any way to scout personality types, by that, I mean specificially search for professional-minded players for example. Obviously I can search for older players with decent mentals, just wondering if there is a quicker way, or if I should simply just build up my scouting knowledge?
This was a really good list of things to do. I'm completely new to Football Manager and honestly not really much of a football fan in real life either, so I'm being forced to learn a whole lot in a little time, not only about the virtual game but about the real game. So this video gives me a lot of helpful information about how to do things. I did want to ask about one thing though, that's kind of different than what you're talking about here. I took the advice of someone and actually started my first save as the manager of a national team. This obviously has a lot of differences to a league team. I don't have to worry about money as much, I have more players available to me, training is a different thing because my players spend most of my time with their normal clubs, and, along with that, there are a lot fewer games. I wanted to know if you had any tips specifically for how to play national teams, so I can get better at that.
Thanks, as far as national teams go in some ways it is easier but you only have a tournament about every 2 seasons and if you so badly you may only get 3 real games against good opposition before being sacked so it's like a condensed pressure rather than constant with the league. as for tips I would say my preference is pick on form rather than reputation, but obviously a messi or ronaldo would probably make it into my team no matter what, tactically I think you want to form a formation around the players you have rather than pick a tactic and pick players to play that way as you are limited on who you have. out of interest why have you decided to get into football and football manager?
Well, honestly I've never been much of a sports fan at all, and really still am not, but I got into football a little bit around the last World Cup, which piqued my interest somewhat, and have followed it a little since then. Aside from that I'm just a strategy gamer in general. I like grand strategy games and business management games in general, and I heard a lot of good things about the last iteration of this (2015) so I figured it might be worth a try. There's also at least a little motivation to learn more about football in general, which I imagine this would inevitably help me do. So it's a number of things, really. I don't have any favorite teams or players or anything, either, since I'm such a novice about it, so I'm not invested in anyone and can just experiment with whomever, which is kind of nice.
Tbh not having preconcieved ideas about players or clubs can be a good thing, I can often not sign a player on fm16 because I don't like them in real life even though they would be a good addition to my squad!
Good start for me so far...already failed the first tip. I thin I have added way too many players without really thinking it through. anxious to hear the rest and maybe I haven't botched this as well! ;)
+Patrick Mo Its not the end of the world just focus your training on team cohesion and don't expect to hit your peak for a good few games, its best to avoid signing loads but sometimes you have to
Interesting vid - I made it all the way through, but it wasnt loud enough. I`m buying FM17 after many years out [ some Fifa ] I`ll watch for more tips thx
geat video mate! but i do have a question, training tactics in general training can help you get if fluid faster? or i should just concetrate on balanced training?
yes training tactics will help as will having coaches with high tactical stats coaching tactics, can be a good idea to train tactics pre-season then switch to fitness/balenced once your happy with the level
"never focus on youth" lol. you're using Valencia here. have you ever used a lower league team? and i don't mean championship or liga adelante level. over the last 3 FM games i've played, i've always shot up 4 leagues in 8-10 seasons (varanama > sky league 2 > sky league 1 > championship > pl). at much lower leagues, you can't afford to buy players that can win you promotion. you'd be lucky to even be able to sign ONE player who's able to play in one league above the one you're in. that's how tight finances are. don't forget that you must be able to attract these expensive players too; they must decide to sign for your club. i've only ever gotten promoted at rapid rates because of my extremely extensive attention given to scouting the best youth talents. you can afford a handful of them, who have the potential to develop into one league above the one you're playing in. the first season, they'd keep you mid-table. the second, promotion. that's the usual pattern. your tip might work for the likes of starting off signing for clubs of Valencia's stature and finances. but you included "lower league" for that tip too. that's just plain wrong. even if you're at championship level, what makes you think you can afford one premier league level player, let alone the several you'd need to even get promoted to the prem? lol. stick with Valencia and specify that your tip is for top level clubs.
Hi, thanks for the comment, I think you might need to watch the video again as I think most of the points you make here I agree with in the video. Firstly I didn't say "never focus on youth" tip no.7 was "don't concentrate on youth to begin with" as if you try to build a good youth team you either may not be around when those players mature or your team has risen to a level those players are no longer capable of reaching. I have extensive lower league experience, there is a short playthrough on this very channel in the old conference league. In order to succeed in lower leagues you rely on loan signings and usually free transfers, but most of the time its players who will come into your first team straight away and hopefully improve it as you don't have the budget to take a punt on a 17yo who might be decent in 2 seasons time. There is a big difference between youth players and players who are young and in my first team. One particular save I remember was as lewis who i took all the way to the championship by the time i reached the championship after about 6 seasons there was not one single player from my first season including youth team players. Please don't be blinded by the fact that team I am using for examples is Valencia I more often than not play lower league sides but for tactic purposes I use teams in top division as that's where most people play or aspire to take a team. But again thanks for commenting I always appreciate it!
I am good at FM and all but usually many of my players get injured, in my Manchester United save, I bought Higuain, and he got injured after playing just 5 matches for 4 months.
I had the same issue with Higuain at United. I sold him, he was shit and when he was getting playing time then injured. :D It happened often. So I get angry and sold him. He needed more time to adapt to new league and team so it was hard when he got injured every time.
+smiis Hi, the quality of the player does not affect tutoring, player tutoring is affected by the personality attribute and determination attribute, so if the older player has higher attributes in these two sections then it is worthwhile tutoring. The benefit is that it will bring the younger player up to the older players level in these two areas, it won't affect his other ratings
Cm 97/98 took over my life and I was hooked, we only used to have one computer back then and no one understood what the hell kind of game this was, it was just flashing words! Loved that game, still can't get my head around the back ground picture of the guy with the ridiculously large nose, not sure if that was some type of photo error or real!
+Kris Conway First couple of seasons I usually leave it to staff, unless there is a particularly brilliant player who turns up then I will sign them up asap, but as i said in the video youth is not that important to me first few seasons as good youth players can become bad if you go up a league or your club stature increases, once you are happy with the place you are in then you can build up the youth team
how do you set up staff to deal with youth contracts cos iv tried loads of times and still it asks me to do contracts and you mentioned team training on fitness do you leave it at fitness through whole season or change it nearer 1st game of season.
Hi, its under staff responsibilities in the staff section, you go to contracts for youth team players and can set who is responsible, usually I would do my head of youth development but if I was a smaller club without one I would go with another trusted staff member. I do leave fitness on for the whole season, I find it most beneficial towards the end of the season
If you mean how do your players learn about a specific formation it comes with time basically, usually about halfway through a season if you have been using a similar tactic most of the way through they will have learnt it, which means they will play better in that formation
i just wan to comment on young players.. i play with atletico, have been for over 10 years (in real time). so, not bad, but weren't always at the top level.. but never in danger of relegation. i always (i mean ALWAYS) steal good youth players, if they're not too expensive.. and i just put them with the main squad but make them available to play for the U19s, tutor them as well. so, this means they'll train with the main squad and be trained by the main coaches.. just let them play with the kids. loan them out when they're 19 or 20, not if they're 17. let them go on loan to a small club in the season you'd have to register them (but you're not gonna)
+Leo Hajder thanks! your example is the perfect way to build for the future but if you had say 1mil budget and spent 500k on great kids and get relegated when you really needed to spend that on a backup striker who could have saved you when your main one gets injured then you will never get to reap the rewards. if as you say you know your gonna have a stable season then it sounds like an excellent plan, my point is to not sacrifice your present for the future cos there won't be one.
yeah my striker has 16 finishing and 15 composure cant score one on ones and now is getting stressed about it cause even if he beats keeper will probably hit the post wtf the game shouldnt generate so many chances if they go wasted and the opponent crossing is lethal its like they throw grenades and if your team tries something spectacular it surely wont score
Hi, thanks for the comment, after my initial disgust that someone would dare to criticize my "art" (that is a joke!) I realized that you have a good point, 42mins is a long video although I try to give context and real situations to back up my tips which is why it is long. however it gave me the idea to make a short version - less than ten mins - with just the tips (ooh er missus) then if anyone wants more detail they can watch the longer on and I can also put time stamps in the longer one to help with finding them. so thanks again!
you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know you know............
Not even 4 minutes into the video and I'm already cringing. Don't change the backroom staff? What? That's literally the most fundamental thing you NEED to do whenever you take over at a new club (assuming you're at the start of a season, not halfway through one). Getting your scouting network going, setting up your training schedules with coaches GOOD enough, having the best physios at your disposal, it's all absolutely necessary to do as soon as you get into the game. Why wait? All you're doing is delaying the inevitable. The level of instability it brings is no where near as harsh as you're making it out to be. It usually lasts like a month at the most..? If you're starting a new save then your club will have settled before the season even begins, so why on earth would you suffer an entire season of average/worthless backroom staff when you can bring in a whole new team to function the way YOU need them to straight away? Pointless. Not sure I even want to watch the rest of the video honestly.
Kevtro CFC I don't see how it is a matter of opinion though. Unless you're joining a big club that already has a fantastic backroom setup, then changing the staff is vital to steer the club in the direction you desire.
hmmm ok so if your back room staff is rubbish then by all means change them but i would struggle to name a club where the coaches and scouts are so bad i would feel it necessary to make wholesale changes, adding one or two in can help for sure but the financial impications of sacking so many at the start of the season could be pretty bad for a smaller club so its not worth it until there contract runs out, unless its a very long one. Also my point through out this video is to stop worrying about long term so much as you may not be around long term, its very unlikely that you would have a youth team in your first season that is so good you will still have most of them by the second, so worrying about what training they get is not really worth the time or effort, I personally always change backroom staff at the end of the first season so i have had a good feel for the club and I have a better idea about what I will need going forward - no point building a great team of youth coaches if your facilities and intake is rubbish for example. I hope this explains my point, there are positives and negatives to everything i say in this video and in all honesty most of the time its not a black and white situation and how you approach your game will depend heavily on the circumstances involved...
