In this episode of #footworkfocus we’re taking a detailed look at hip rotations & hip switches and how to control your space on the court with the different options available. 🏀🔬📖
🔹
Definitions:
- ‘Hip Rotation’ - a players ability to partially pivot on either foot while rotations their hips towards the target in order to access another footwork (drop, spit, etc.)
- ‘Partial pivot’ - the act of beginning to pivot on one foot & then interrupting the pivot by lifting the pivot foot mid turn so that both feet are airborne (only legal while dribble is live)
- ‘Single leg foot replacement’: the act of stepping a single foot back under the center frame of the body for the purpose of transitioning to another footwork.
🔹
Options:
1. Outside hip rotation (90 degree turn)
2. Inside hip rotation (90)
3. Hip switch
4. Forward hip rotation (180)
5. Reverse hip rotation (outside, 180)
6. Inside Reverse hip rotation
7. Inverted hip rotation 360 turn

Hi Nate, just wondering what are the advantages of these hip rotations/switches and drops versus simply stepping forward by putting pressure on the back foot is it all about space?

I was wondering about the same thing. I guess it has to do with body positioning. If we directly step forward out of a closed/protected stance to drive by the D, the body automatically opens up and we kinda hit them with the chest if they slide over. Ideally it would be the other way round: we do a cross step and lower the shoulder so that at the moment of passing/contact the ball is maximally protected and it is easier to get around them. So you open up before the drive in order to be closed during that all-important first step. Just my theory :) Also it seems a quick way to reset your feet from any position to an attacking position. And I guess it helps to throw off the defense's rhythm. Anyway nice video! I haven't seen this type of information anywhere else.
