The fact that the Soviet-Afghan War never happens in this series is going to change quite a lot of events throughout the rest of the series. The first change is that Afghanistan's Communist Government could collapse earlier than it did and the Muijahadeen would never have formed. This in turn would not give us organizations such as Al Qaeda, or the Taliban, making the 9/11 terrorist attacks wouldn't be possible. The USSR would still collapse, but it would take longer than it did in our timeline. Perhaps the State Treaty would still be signed creating the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics, but we will never know.

@Quinzerrak well they didn't have a vietnam and the moon minerals kept them afloat. they state they have a hybrid economy. a lot of people don't realize is that the soviet union economy was in the toilet for a number of years with their bureaucrats falsifying reports that in a capitalist society would get exposed.
@AlexanderUnit-731
@AlexanderUnit-731 Год назад
@quinzerrak4975 Yes i remember these "stagnant 5-year plans" which made USSR the superpower in 10 years, caused economic wonders of 1930's and 1960's, and made the USSR the 1-st economy of Europe and 2-nd economy of the world.
@AlexanderUnit-731
@AlexanderUnit-731 Год назад
@quinzerrak4975 Quality of the Soviet products was very high due to socialist competition and due to characteristics-oriented mass production which ignores the color of the package and without overprized private owner's interest. Soviet microwaves and refrigerators from 1970's and 80's are still working today. Soviet prefab apartment blocks provided millions of people with free housing, free schools and free kindergartens. Something that capitalist Russia didn't have. Planned economy in theory and in practice made Russia a superpower. In the conditions of the military invasion from 14 capitalist countries in 1920's, in the conditions of economic blockade and political non-recognition of 1930's - only planned economy saved us. Russia had 100 mln poor and ineffective individual farmers who would never afford themselves a tractor. But united under central management in Kolkhoz (collective cooperative farms) and Sovkhoz (state-corporate farms) they have become a big one inner consumer for heavy industry, boosting our economy and launching it into space.
@AlexanderUnit-731
@AlexanderUnit-731 Год назад
@quinzerrak4975 *But I have heard, especially from conservatives, that the USSR was still behind in technology and that they only got to space because of international competition which is a trait of capitalism rather than socialism* - I can't imagine any owner of the means of production (aka capitalist) to seek any competition. Every capitalist wants monopoly and a minister chair. If capitalism was a competitive society, then it would consist of a smale-scale individual craftsmen instead of mass-production industrial giants supported by financial monopolies. *Not to mention, what about the economic calculation problem Ludwig Von Mises talked about?* - I personally don't see any problem. Even capitalists themselves are not engaged in any calculation process. In capitalism everything is done by mercenaries who work for wage (aka proletariat of all levels) - they count money, they manage, they distribute, they trade, they analyze, they advise, they design, they build and they produce. Communism is about the fact that in the modern world there is no need for a capitalist who only owns property that can easily be managed by public. - I think the modern computing power is able to calculate the number of screws and nuts that the industry needs daily. Especially since a socialist society does not require 100 types of beer bottles, but only 5 types. It does not require consumer goods and cars with unique parts, everything fits together and is interchangeable, which greatly simplifies planning on a national scale.

Would Star Wars (the movie series and expanded universe) still exist in this timeline? I would assume so since George heavily took inspiration from real life American military interventions on foreign countries and the ongoing space race to write the movies (besides of course many other Sci-FI/Fantasy franchises previously released and also a bit of ancient mythology) and since the space race in this TL takes steroids I still see all the apparent factors that compelled George Lucas to write Star Wars, but that might be something I can't put my finger on.

One thing puzzles me about the Space Shuttle. Why did they still go for the external tank and SRB method of launching when in this alternative timeline they would have had the funding to build the original, crewed, reusable liquid-fueled booster?
@toomanyaccounts
@toomanyaccounts Год назад
because the boosters despite what people think were recovered and recycled. the space shuttle program was super expensive because of the reusability aspects. its cheaper and quicker to build the boosters then recover then and reuse them which takes a lot of time and money to make sure they can be used again. the sea dragons were projected to be incredibly cheaper since the booster was made out of cheap materials that when the booster burned up or was left as space junk one could easily and cheaply build a new big dumb booster at sea
@AbelMcTalisker
@AbelMcTalisker Год назад
@@toomanyaccounts The point I`m trying to make though was that the External Tank and SRB configuration wasn`t the original design but was adopted later as a cost-saving measure during development. The original concept was to have a carrier vehicle with a crew consisting mainly of fuel tanks that were fully reusable and could glide back to the launch site after the Orbiter separated. In this alternate timeline, the funding to develop the carrier vehicle would presumably have been available. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d0_WL0z4--g.html It's interesting that some later versions of this configuration show an Orbiter similar to what we are familiar with with the booster evolving somewhat.
@toomanyaccounts
@toomanyaccounts Год назад
@@AbelMcTalisker it was ditched not only for cost saving but if something went wrong the crew would be killed. it would be more risk of personal for little gain. there is also the issue of weight. a manned booster wouldn't enable the space shuttle to have more cargo since more fuel would be require to have the crewed booster land back on Earth versus fall into the ocean. so there were reasons besides cost saving that the manned booster got dropped.
@Jogeta5
@Jogeta5 Год назад
That was the budget limitation for season 2 and the showrunner went with sets that are recognisable and cheaper to use. The nuclear-powered Pathfinder shuttle likely ate some of that part of the budget as well.

Yep, the timeline only really diverges when the Soviets land on the Moon first in June '69. Star Trek: TOS predates that by about three years. In fact, it already wrapped up its third season by the time of the lunar landing.

The communist world undergoes transformations due to the need to modify its structures, the reforms dynamize the states without weakening them, in the ussr, secretary Gorbachev manages to put his project into practice successfully, as well as, the union resists nationalism, giving you as alge the yeltsin prison, and others linked to the west CIA; . in the western world, capitalism enters into crisis, as a result of neoliberal reforms that increase unemployment and deepen inequalities, in response, states use coercion; in the US, President Bush militarizes the police and President Clinton intensifies war policy; . the bipolar world, us vs ussr, begins to disappear with the rise of new powers, a multipolar world begins to form, with China, Yugoslavia, India and Brazil gaining ground, highlighting China and its space program; . in 1994 the USSR once again surpasses the US with the landing on Mars, a result of the Salyut and Buran project, however the US slows down its space program due to the crisis; . Fearing losing the US's hemonic position, President Clinton strengthens NATO and creates a new military alliance in the east, the Pacific Treaty, and brings Israel into NATO, as well as entrusts NASA with funding for the project to surpass the soviet landing on Mars, the first starship.

I doubt Gorbachev will be in power giving that Andropov are still alive and heallthy (IRL he died because of declining health after he get sick by smallpox in Afghanistan after invasion). After all he was chosen by party to lead because of his young age, not pertically because how influenced he was. But there is a good part in that - most of his policies Gorbachev took from Andropov ideas. Perhaps we still would see something like Perestroika and Glasnost' but slower and with less confrontation from old hardliners giving that Andropov was respected by everyone and had more political power as former head of KGB.

The meltdown at TMI wasn't known until much later after the event had occurred and even then it was only 1.2%, the meltdown was triggered when the operators at the plant were overwhelmed with conflicting data and acted according to their training, it was human error that caused it, not technology, Lennon wasn't assassinated, he was shot by a manic fan, no chance he would have survived his injuries in any timeline, at least make your show believable!

The Soviets not invading afghan? Camila being welcomed by the crown! You don’t have to be past it to know the significants of those two events alone! Let alone 3 mile island! As a 20 year old, I do know, and do very much care, I am happy that every reference, even if I don’t get it, is in there, as it just makes the show more authentic and more nostalgic for a time none of us sadly got the chance to live through, older or younger.

I was surprised by the genuine lack of wokeness in the series, a few hints here and there of a few issues of the times but no woke garbage.. surprisingly refreshing. As a famous man (apparently racist now) once said: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"
