I use Street View in Google Maps to pick a Gas Station on down the road. The zoomed in map view also gives an idea about how to get around the station. Proven very helpful in the small towns where there may not be very many choices.

Sounds like a good way to see if they have diesel also. Either the price signs or even the green pump.

My best suggestion is to become VERY Comfortable with backing your rig up. If you get into a situation where you can't go forward, your ONLY option is to back it up. If you are uncomfortable backing up YOU ARE IN TROUBLE !! If you are comfortable backing up, you can get out the same way you came in. Also, Practice backing up for a long distance in a straight line ( a very under rated skill ). If you are comfortable backing up, a lot of your "Scared" goes away, beyond that, look WAY ahead of yourself to see how you are going to get out if you decide to pull into a spot.

While driving with the refrigerator running on propane is controversial be sure to turn the refrigerator off when refueling. Don't want an open flame around the gas pumps!

I learned after our first trip to get gas when it is convenient and not when you need it and make sure when you see that it is available at the next exit that it is not a couple miles away from the exit and not right there. One thing we found as we just got back is on the Ohio turnpike the have gas at the diesel pumps for the tractor trailers in the back where there is more room and a little more open to maneuver.

Excellent tips. One additional rule that we have when towing our Airstream is that we start looking for a gas station when the tank hits 1/4 full. That way we have enough fuel to reject a station if the ingress/egress doesn't look good.

After reading how many people carry extra gas and or upgrade their tanks to hold 98 gallons (900 extra pounds) maybe I can start a new business refueling rv'ers with a fuel tanker big rig while they drive down the highway, similar to refueling a plane in midair. Imagine how much safer and time that will save! Love your videos keep them coming!
@douglasgroff7648
@douglasgroff7648 7 лет назад
Yep, the extra fuel is definitely extra weight. But as long as you aren't over the truck's limits, perfectly safe. We weighed our rig fully loaded, and have plenty of capacity on each axle and are about 10,000 lbs below our GCWR. Keep on trucking!

I have crossed the country several times pulling a RV trailer, I do not see a need for a larger tank than what came with my truck. I have a 500 mile range.

You need to watch for curbs and concrete barriers in these gas stations. They will take out your trailer tires and rims. A slight bump can blow out a tire and bend the rim. A wide turn is needed to avoid tire damage. The shotgun passenger can help by looking out for these curbs and tire clearance. The diesel pump is usually on the end and you can loop around to it. Always verify that you have a clear exit before pulling into a situation. If I can't see how I am going to get out, I'll walk over and make sure I can get my trailer out before pulling in. If you have diesel, you have to use the CAR diesel pump not the high pressure big rig pump. Most large stations will have both.

This is our number one issue. And the first time we traveled I got stuck in a gas station. Luckily there was a helpful man who helped me get out. I have dropped the trailer and gotten gas when I need to. I carry extra gas and use the trucker path app.

Thanks for another great video kids!! Not sure if it's been mentioned here yet, but don't forget about the 'tail swing' of your trailer, or motorhome. If you are fueling with the pumps on the left side, and you make a sharp right hand turn as you leave, you can strike the pumps with the back left corner of the RV, and vise/versa for the right side. Normally, when you make a sharp turn while towing in a straight line, the back corner, (opposite of your direction of turn) of the trailer/motorhome will 'swing out' from the outside edge of you trailer tires about 1 foot for every 3 feet of distance behind the center of your trailer axles. Like Sean & Kristy sez folks: PRACTICE/PRACTICE/ PRACTICE!!! Happy and safe travels everyone!!

We have a small trailer (17' Casita) so there are few stations that might pose a problem. That being said however, when the fuel tank is at the halfway point I start looking for a large station to fill up the tank since I do not like to tempt fate. Also, by then it is usually time to take care of other business.

I pull a 35 foot goose neck 3 horse trailer with a living quarters for my goats. Am a crazy goat lady and enjoy showing the goats and staying with them at the show. I scan the area and move on if not enough room. I got caught once in Ga and the owner of the gas station was kind enough to send a spotter for me to back the rig out after fueling up. So all was good. If you get in a tight spot, ask for help to spot the back of the rig. By the grace of God I was able to get fuel and back the rig with no problems. I also have to be careful of which shows I go to. If the unloading and parking is a problem, I don't hit those shows. Have hauled a 16 foot stock trailer all over the country and can put that thing in your pocket. That gooseneck is a bear... I think I prefer a bumper pull. Love your videos, and have learned a bunch...

This a great video. Great advice too. When I first started pulling a 30 foot fifth wheel, this was a major concern for me. I wish i had this video before I made my 1st attempts. I can only add that I took the approach of taking small trips (4-5) that I knew the route and gas stations along the way. After those trips, I started understanding what to expect and consider. Having a co-pilot is extremely helpful. Again, great advice.

When we are going on a trip that we know we will have to stop for fuel we try to pre plan our fuel stops. We use google maps with aerial view and street view along with Gas Buddy to get a good look at the station to make sure there is room to get our rig in and out safely.

My wife and I just recently purchased a travel trailer. We take long road trips already even with out a trailer attached. One good rule of thumb that we try to live by is to never let our tank go below 1/2 even if we don’t need fuel we still fill up. It just seems easier. That’s actually saved our butts more than once. Love your show by the way.

I have a 40 gallon Transfer Flow system that gives me a total of 74 gallons of fuel. The auxiliary is computer controlled and feeds the main tank in my pickup so it's operation is transparent. A readout on my dash tells the amount of fuel remaining in each tank. I am a member of a major card lock fueling system and we carry a directory with us that gives the location of all of their stations. We pick fueling facilities that are along our route of travel.

Seems like the trend in filling stations these days is the ones that you pull into facing the convenience store. That arrangement makes it very difficult to pull out of, especially with all the other traffic too. We avoid those types of stations.

Excellent points. One thing to consider when getting Diesel at a truck stop is the price. I find the price of Diesel at truck stops is much higher than you will find at a regular service station. Usually after going through a tank of fuel, over 300 miles, i'm ready to pull over for the night. I do what you recommend, unhook and fill up.

We have a 36' travel trailer and will only use truck stops. Flying j preferrable cause they have rv lanes , dump stations, lp etc. pilots are good to but have no rv lanes. You can get a nation wide book that has all the flying j and pilot truck stops and there ammenities for every state. We use it exclusively and we have traveled from coast to coast several times. Plus if you are a good sam member you get a discount on gas, desiel and lp. Also sean i watched your video about all the tire failures you had going to alaska and wondered why you don't use a TPMS. I won't pull out of my drive without mine on.

Great tips LoLoHo, lots of drivers forget about their rigs height and off-tracking when making wide turns. Less not forget the other point-of-view, the ground. Some locations have dips and inclines to pull into a gas station. Its very easy to bottom out your bumper pull at the hitch stand or to bottom out at the rear of the trailer while traversing a dip or incline.

I pulled into fuel my 40’ Diesel Pusher in a regular gas station in Iowa and the pump islands weren’t straight...they were on a slight angle to the left which I noted on the way in. However, 20 minutes later as we were pulling out, I forgot about that slight angle and did my normal pulling forward and turning to the right and scraped the red pole that protected the pump! No damage to the facility but minor damage to my rig, the worst part being the side blinker cover and a huge red streak down the rear of my passenger side. I was able to remove the red streak with rubbing compound so a great lesson with minimal damage. Note to self, make sure you pull out at the proper angle and pull forward enough to clear all obstacles 😀😀😀

We just came back from Carrabelle fl. 350 miles one way. My Silverado will get me about 250 mile towing our camper then I need fuel. We found it better to plan your route around the flying j pilot ta loves even though it might add a few miles to your trip it's safer. We were traveling with my 81 year old mother in law so we passed several stations the I couldn't see an exit, don't stop!!! Use the truck stops and you won't get in a jam. Thanks for the great video.

A very nice addition for fueling is if you are pulling a trailer or fifth wheel is an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed of your truck and set yourself a cushion of fuel for a refuel point. It also really extends the miles you can drive on a fill up.

We began watching your videos and those a few other RVers a few years ago when we were debating if buying an RV was even the right thing for us to do. We had the Grand Plan to sell it all, slap 1/2M on a diesel pusher [with a dishwasher and wash/dry no less] and be gone. Long story short - the Grand Plan was nixed when we found ourselves in an emergency animal clinic at 1am with a very sick Greyhound during a test trip in a rented motor home, motion sickness. We've re-grouped and decided on a Class C from LTV to use for short trips ranging from a few days to a few weeks while the 2 Greyhound stay with a sitter. We've had Tazzy since March of 2017 and we plan to take her along. We saw a video from another RVer last year that discussed fueling an issues with gas station layouts. We began checking out the stations in town and there are a few we won't use with our cars much less a 25' motor home and none are suitable for anything larger than a work van. Plus 9 times out of 10 the diesel pump is always 'out of service'. Your video confirmed what we had learned but with a bit of humor!! Since we met, husband and I have done many cross-country car trips and we've come to favor FlyingJ and Pilot for gas stops, especially after dark - clean, well lit, a mini store and the coffee's not bad! We've pulled the trigger on the RV thanks to your videos!!

A note for those towing with a diesel truck. At regular gas stations diesel is almost always located on the outside pumps. Makes it easy to get in but getting out requires a plan. 14 years 32 foot long trailer. Been everywhere lower 50. Frenchy and Lucy

This video is right on! Another problem with towing a trailer occurs when you want to back along side a dump station that's situated in a tight corner. I once had a trailer with two grey water valves, one in front and one in back, and sometimes I couldn't empty one of the grey water tanks because I couldn't line it up tp the dump.

I Installed a 90 gal fuel tank and with my 35 gal tank in my diesel pickup which gives me a range on the avg of 1500 miles when pulling my 5ver. I use google satellite map to preview fuel stops, most of the time you can save .20 to .40 cents a gal over the major truck stops. I'm a truck driver and I avoid the majors all the time with no trouble when trucking. Gas buddy and planning is what I use for pleasure and business.

I did the same with an auxiliary 98-gallon tank from Transfer Flow, which gives me lots of flexibility and over 1,100 miles between fill-ups. I also fuel up at the BIG truck stops (normally Pilot & Flying J) and use my Good Sam Club card and most will give at least .03 cents off per gallon. I like filling in the BIG truck lanes as I fill up so much faster with the large fuel nozzle. Not all RV lanes are long RV friendly.

Have you ever used "The Next Exit"? It's an app and a book. I am so glad I had the paper version on the road this summer for our cross country trip. Tells you who has diesel, where the station is (2 miles north). It also tells you all kinds of other things, campgrounds, Walmarts, tire stores, etc. Lifesaver!

Once in the middle of nowhere on the res we could not find diesel. My mechanic friend mixed up oil plus kerosene and we staggered to the closest station with diesel. Only harm done was being the butt of the joke when buying kerosene at the trading post--very expensive kerosene that day. Lesson learned.

Since we upgraded to a longer trailer we have got a "Card lock" gas card (Co-op) and locations brochure. It's like a tuck stop refueling station, all that's there is just pumps, And a keypad/card slot. And swing room.

Wish I had seen this before I took my camper out for the first time ever during the Fourth of July week. On the last day I was filling up to come home. Didn't have any trouble getting in but pulling out it had gotten so crowded that when I was pulling out I turned right too soon and had a small argument with the safety metal pole and cause $1000 worth of damage. Not a good ending to my first trip. Love your channel. I have learned so much from you.

Thanks for the video, I've been pulling a travel trailer for many many years and I still fret about going into a gas station with it. Yes, like any real life situation if the situation makes you nervous, get outta there (LOL). There have been times when I've had to back out of a filling situation because someone had pulled in front of me whereby I could not make the turn anymore, they left enough room for a car to make it but certainly not my truck and trailer!!!

Good video. We have a small travel trailer, 18 ft overall, and Even so I have gotten into a couple of sticky spots. The worst for me have been when I used the first of two pumps and another motorist boxes me in. Now I always try to use the second pump of two in a line.

When we picked our TT up last year I thought I, too, would use the ol' truck stop trick. As I pulled into the lane all I saw were diesel and DEF pumps. Sooo I got to BACK all the way out of a long line of trucks. Lol...so for the gassers out there, don't be afraid to "abort mission" and see your way out a gasoline refueling stop. Love your vids, guys!!!

Good video. Take our new rig to an open parking lot, set some cones out and practice some. Practice backing while you are in the parking lot. Watch your rig in your mirrors (mirror on the inside of the turn). You will be able to see if you are going to contact anything and therefore need to stop. Just be aware and careful and you will be fine.

In the short time we have owned our RV, we always opt to use a truckstop for fuel. Makes it nice since most have the separate RV lanes.

I tow our Airstream 25fb with a Ram 2500 Cummins. I don't like truck stops unless they have an RV island because of the large fuel nozzles. Sometimes the flow is too much even at the lowest setting. Once the wide nozzle got stuck in my filler tube, it took me several minutes to gently jiggle it loose. I notice a lot of the truck stops have cash/credit prices that normal stations don't. Good thing about truck stops is the DEF pumps, more affordable than the 2 1/2g retail containers but LOLO doesn't use DEF.

Great information. I always vary two 6 gal gas cans and one of these jigger hoses so I get all of the gas in the can into the truck. If I can't pull into a gas station I'll stop next to it and fill the cans and 12 gallons will get me to where I can fill up. Of course carting an extra 6 gallons with you all the time can't hurt either.

My F-250 came with a 22 gallon tank. At less than 10 mpg that meant less than a 220 mile range between fill ups. We found ourselves having to stop twice in a less than 350 mile trip. A a two dog friendly rest stop and we were losing a lot of time. Solution. Upgraded to a 50 gallon Titan fuel tank. We can travel more than 400 miles on one tank. We typically set up in a camp site, then I’ll take the truck out and fill up for our next day trip. Well worth the cost.

I've towed a TT and now have a class c towing a car (toad). The best idea I came up with is to look for stations that have their fueling lanes parallel with the road. It requires no sharp turns to get in and get out. I have nearly 50 feet of responsibility behind me so giving myself an extra buffer from problems is at the top of the list. Plus there is no backing up when you have a toad so you have only one shot at it and it always has to be a good one.
@LongLongHoneymoon
@LongLongHoneymoon 7 лет назад
Excellent point about the parallel fueling lanes. Also with regard to the toad -- no backing up! Indeed, not much room for mistakes... :O
@ChrisRI1000

Long Long Honeymoon Yeah the only choice is to disconnect and then reconnect somewhere else. Backing up destroys the tow bar and then big bucks to replace it. I do miss that second and third bite at the apple...

For Jordan: avoid stations that are oriented perpendicular to the road way or store front (4:45 to 5:00), if at all possible. These have been the very worst for us and we have learned to keep on looking. This might also be where a jerry can (like Sean mentions) will really come in handy if you have no other choice.
@knutblaise9437
@knutblaise9437 7 лет назад
Mic Tod Yeah. I hate the islands which are perpendicular to the road and gas station front. The stations are designed to allow vehicles to park perpendicular to the gas station front so exiting can be very hazardous.
@mic982
@mic982 7 лет назад
Exactly. I guess the thinking is, if you're facing the store, your more likely to see the ads and run in to buy? Not set up at all for those of us hauling trailers. I like the truck stops where I can buy my DEF fluid via a self-serve pump instead of having to buy it at Walmart and dump it in 2 gals at a time. (I drive a diesel).
@johnthomas3034

Plan your route using one of the many route planning apps. And call ahead and ask about canopy heights, fuels available, and if you’re long hauling call ahead and see if the showers at truck stops are for professional drivers only. Especially if you’re boondocking. If they let you use the shower it will save some tank space and keep the air a little fresher in the tow vehicle and the trailer. If you find yourself stuck and have to back into a busy hwy call the local police and most of the time they would rather stop traffic for you instead of working an accident.

I just purchased a book titled "Next Exit" that gives RVers info on what is coming up at the next exit on the major highways, state by state. Looked at it briefly and it was updated for 2021, but haven't used it yet. I know there are apps etc to do much of the same, but I like to have a resource for when mobile devices don't work.

I occasionally come upon small stations that have pumps perpendicular to the road. I know I can't pull forward and out after filling, but it's usually not an issue. I just back the rig up 10 feet or so (with wife spotting) and pull away. I have a 30 ft trailer and haven't encountered situation where the backup maneuver would put the trailer in the road (yet)

I don't have time to research gas stations. I start scoping when I am down to 6o miles till empty(of course, your location might warrant scoping with more DTE). I pull off the Highway, when there are multiple (not single) fueling stations (which are almost always posted on signs before the exit) Go slow and scope out the entrance and exit and the lanes. If no go, keep on going to the next one and repeat. Works for me, been traveling FT 1 year.

I once thought I was making a loop around an empty bank parking lot and accidentally pulled into the ATM drive thru. With inches on each side I successfully back out but it doesn't take too many of these mistakes to eye ball the situation before pulling in.

You could do what I have done a couple of time. I parked and uhitched out at the end of a large parking lot nearby or at the gas station. Then fill up and on your way. Grated it may take a few more minutes but whorth it to stay safe leave with no damage.

I just drive a Prius car, but there are still some good ideas. Gas Buddy has saved my butt on more than one occasion. Note to new people, if a station has been Real Good for you, or has a better lane for fueling, leave a review. That way the next RVer knows. Gas Buddy works because we do the reporting. Also check your Auto/RV club, some will bring you a 5 gallon can a fuel for just the cost of the fuel. Yeah, I got the highest AAA membership, because I travel by car. But there are others out there more geared for RVs.

There is a great app called "Truckers Path" that shows Walmarts, all truck stops, and rest areas. We avoid Love's because they are ALWAYS higher priced in diesel than the other truck stops. The Pilot app is a good one too if you want to try to exclusively fuel at Pilots for their rewards program.

We have found that size (of the gas station) doesn't always matter. We have been through some small ones that were super easy to get in an out of (pumps were parallel to the store) and big ones that were truck stops but difficult (gas pumps were close to the front entrance of the store). I have asked Gas Buddy to add a filter for "RV Friendly". If more of us ask, they might do it.

hahaha! That ending almost made me forget what your subject was! I got stuck in a narrow gas station with my 22' ClassC. People didn't want to back up behind me....they had no choice. There was not enough room between the station & tanks to get through. Bad design. Another issue is steep step up type of driveways. I hate bumper drag! ugh!

I have not had the problem yet with my 5th wheel but once with my living quarters 4 horse gooseneck I was in a situation where I did not feel I could pull through. There was a local officer on site and I requested he help with traffic as I backed out . Also when traveling through a large city and fuel is a question I try to always fuel before or after that area.
