These were the fastest road legal car of their time. Still a small block by US terms but out of the box put out big block power. They reputedly had 100 BHP more than spec at the rear wheels. These cars were basically built for one race the Bathurst 500 which manufacturers needed to build 200 identical spec road registered example to pass homologation for our US friends. They then ran in a year long series called the Australian Turing car series. We also used to run them in a series called the Toby lee series at Oran park south of Sydney under lights at night. The most fantastic racing you have ever seen, and the track was jam packed with fans cheering on their favourite brand. The Torana XU1 a two door coupe with a big straight six that weighed in at approx half the weight of the big HO and the Chrysler Charger e49, again a big Hemi 6 running triple Webber carbs. They were the great days of Australian touring cars. This was an exceptional replica thanks for sharing.
GT HO owners have a lot of friends .....everyone knows some one who has one...... like said before only 300 made but 30 000 still exist some how ..... nothing beats the sound and pleasure of driving a GT Ford ...any of them
Only 8 XY GT's were ever built in black, 7 were autos, and one manual. Only one black Phase 3 was ever built which is a manual for a total of 9 genuine GT's in black, most which survive. I like the black with the white trim combination on this vehicle.
If i only knew back in it's days. i had one but they were worth nothing. sold it for 7g's did plenty of them trim wise did my apprentice ship in 75. know them in side and out.
Most replicated car in Australia the XY Falcon 500 to GT. This is a very nice XY Falcon sedan and the white interior is an unusual choice for a replica (the most common XY variant today) but I like it over the usual black interior.
Here is a story. There were 2 XY GTHOs bought in Mildura Vic new. One by Bill Fisher and i forget the other guys name. Anyhow Billys car is the white one that was the first $mill HO sold i am told. Anyhoo the story is that both owners were sent an update exhaust to replace what i think was a louder (nice) stainless system with a choked up steel system. Billys car was famous for rattling the shop windows in Langtree ave Mildura, he also stated jokingly that compared to his Jag sports car of the day, he could get the crows with this one (of course you cant in reality). Billy neglected to fit the "update" exhaust and the other guy was probably shattered with his. I also remember Billy sold his car in i think the late 80s for 25K to a store manager of one of his Supermarkets. Bill Fishers HO remains the most famous car ever in Mildura. One last thing, a friend that worked for Billy used the car in his wedding along with a GT and i think a couple of mock ups. Word is none of them could run with the legend.
My father had the Fairmont model purple with white interior he used to wash it with kerosene mixed with water the paint never faded. It looked like it out of the Ford show room. Then a millennial snow flak P plate ran into it wrote it off
Were it genuine, brand new it was only worth $ 5,000. Now the same value as a good low mileage Aston Martin, without air conditioning and no power steering???
ONLY 5 grand ?? That was a lot of money in 1971. Keep in mind a house and land package in that year was $14,000.. Not many could afford to pay 5490.00 for a car !!
@@johnsmith-ce2tq More of these things than Ford ever built. You want a genuine car, you buy a genuine car, not a replica someone has put together in their back yard. End of the argument!
@@johnsmith-ce2tq Looks great john, but that's about all. I restore original cars to factory & better. General rule is....Original condition, restored original, replica. Big difference in price between all three & replica is way down the list, far behind restored original. Fifty years of restoration & a number of Best in Show awards tells me I don't talk bullshit. Seeya!
Itd be nerve wracking driving thiis jewel in suburban /city traffic. Too many Karens in their Toyota Landcruisers waiting to jump out and sideswipe ya. Anything is fair game to a Karen, specially when she’s taken a couple of Mogadons and she’s off to pick the kids up from school three quarts of an hour late.
lol....a 4-door. That car would be stripped of its drivetrain and crushed if it were in the United States. If I live 1000 years I will never come to understand Australians’ obsession with four-door cars.
large 2 doors never sold well here, just because it's 4 dr doesn't make it a granny car or what, more useful as a family car too, we're different from the US and US cars fall apart on our roads, like to see your muscle cars race for 500 miles flat out like ours did in the 70s, most likely drop it guts by half way or run out of brakes !
