This is one of my favorite George Harrison songs, I love how he brings the band together for something simple that they can all have fun with. The instrumentation on this song is also unique and gives this Beatles classic a distinct character.
For the Piano, I taped newspaper to the strings and under the hammers. I listened for which notes buzz, were completely muted or were unaffected by the piano and tried to get it right per string. I added slapback delay to match the Phil Spector version, but for the rest I was referencing the Naked version.
The Hofner 5140 Hawaiian Standard Lap Steel Guitar was recreated with this Guitar Center Lapsteel made by Rogue. The pickup brightness was rolled off to zero, it was way too bright. Also, the lighter John used turned out to be important. A steel bar was to straight sounding and missing the boing-y-ness of the original. I picked up the dispoz-a-lite vintage lighter from Ebay and was blown away by the sound. I also discovered after the fact that a regular bic lighter would have been fine, don't use steel though (unless you are playing live)
George's acoustic was recorded live while singing, the vocals were overdubbed next year in 1970. When The Beatles found a chord they liked, you'll see it show up in a bunch of songs. The I've Got a Feeling and Dig A Pony chord pattern also shows up here (x02225 to x04235). Capo'd at the 5th fret and the intro figure comes back during the slide solo.
Ringo is using brushes and a stick for this song. He can also be seen with the brush in the Get Back film.
