Foraging for Wood Ear fungus

Here's a common edible fungus that I have enjoyed collecting many times in the past.
It grows on Elder trees and can be picked at almost any time of the year - in drier months, it may be found as shrivelled, hard little pieces of material that look like plastic or dried rawhide - in wetter months, it can be found fully hydrated and looking often disturbingly ear-like

These are the best videos. Such comfy, warm and down-to-earth feel in these videos so they are the perfect thing to watch with cup of coffee and a warm blanket while its -26°C and snowing outside.

Very nice! I found Wood Ears coming out the ends of Cottonwood logs in western Kansas this autumn. It's amazing how floppy they can look, lol. Your description of leather for the dried ones seems pretty right! It would be hard to mistake the Wood Ears for anything else! Happy mushroom hunting! :D

I've only ever seen them on Elder, but my books do say they grow on other broad leafed timber, (favouring elder)

I haven't eaten wood ear but the sound of you cutting it brought back memories of a jellyfish dish I ate in Shanghai. It had that crisp, jelly-like texture, except it was thicker giving it a reminiscence of cartilage.

Wood ears are one of those fungus that it's next to. Impossible to mistake for anything else. At a glance possibly winter polypore could be mistaken. But those are lighter in colour and have pores on the underside. Plus there's no toxic polypore species in the UK. Plenty that are inedible but none that will kill you
@AtomicShrimp

Agreed - Wood ears have such a distinctive texture, shape, appearance and habit, I think they would be incredibly hard to mistake for something else

These are very commonly used in Japan, often sold dried but sometimes fresh where available. I usually prefer to cut them into larger pieces or just tear them. I also like the massive thick version which is almost black on the upper side and white under.

The sound the wood ear fungus makes when you cut into them reminds me of the sound of chopping aloe vera leaves. They have the same-ish smooth outside skin and the inside is like a jelly but a hard jelly. Super interesting!

The missus turned me onto wood ear years ago, she's Chinese yah see. What it lacks in flavour it makes up for in texture, which is rubbery, with a satisfying resistance when you bite through it. It can also be dried and stored for years if done properly.
