People are so quick to say that Minnesota isnt an ideal state for living because of our dreadful winters, but I must say that I find winter to be a beautiful and majestic season. My advice to anyone that complains about the cold is to invest in some high quality winter gear. If you are a permanent resident of Minnesota, or any semi-artic location, you may be surprised by how magical it can truly be if you just bundle up appropriately and step outside.

A perfect place to start would be to acquire some waterproof boots that can withstand negative degree temperatures. They dont have to be brand new and they don't have to be fashionable ... Their purpose is to keep your feet nice and dry and toasty warm.

Hi Richard; The property you are on in Northern Minnesota, you mentioned it borders what was Potlatch land. Would that be near Bemidji/Cass Lake? The lay of the land and the plant environment looks a lot like the Nary/Farris area. Growing up I used to hunt Potlatch land. It is nice to know I am not alone in knowing the "columbine" as honeysuckle. I have always known it as honeysuckle. It was always called honeysuckle. The dandelion seed head, blowing it off and making a wish. LOL We always did that. You must have grown up in the Cass Lake area. I have never heard of anyone else doing this in other areas. Also never heard columbine called honeysuckle anywhere but the Cass Lake area.

So question: are the raspberry leaves for making tea better when they are young or early in the season vs later in the summer/fall? This was very interesting to me and would love to learn more. So glad I found this video. I really enjoyed it!

I find most greens are better young but have used them at varying stages and enjoyed them all.

I thought Honey Suckle was poison's ? Or are we thinking of a different plant. The one I'm thinki9ng about is bush or tree like and has red berries.

The red flower he called honeysuckle is actually a red columbine.

Question… did you notice how much the draught affected plant growth with the severe draught we had this last year (2022)? In the metro area I noticed the wild strawberry, raspberries and black berries were dried up and of those I did find were woody from lack of moisture. Maybe up north the draught wasn’t as bad? but the lack of rainfall was significant central to southern mn. I’m really hoping this year we’ll get the moisture needed for the trees and plants to bounce back.

Definitely had an effect there and even across the country. Heard that the mushroom season in Washington was not very good. Here in Florida foraging was tough. So yes I think it was a tough year all over.

Columbine= wild honeysuckle vice versa. Didn’t know you can eat them- will definitely try this spring
