What a privilege it is to speak with the celebrated artist, Alan Rankle. Together we look at how time affects perception, how paint is both technical and conceptual, and consider how external influence informs outcomes. Rankle's work demonstrates a keen awareness of art historical contexts, including such diverse inspiration as 17th century Dutch landscape painting, traditional Chinese painting, and the 20th century movements of Abstract Expressionism, Conceptual Art, and Expressionism. Yet, to remain with such influences is also to limit what Rankle does and can do; his underpinning psycho-spiritual values and awareness of the sublime is fused with a powerful and dynamic visual understanding that transforms surface into place, familiar flatness to the ever-deepening void, and the obvious to the oblique.
Thank you, Alan, for a most illuminating and inspiring discussion.
