You are a rare intellectual that our country should revere... Keep up the good work, our country desperately needs academics like you to bring rationale into our thought process !
We Pakistani are suffering with inferior complex. Saudi Arabian Muslims will never accept us equal to them, doesn't matter we learn Arabic or not. Yemeni people speak perfect Arabic but face utmost discrimination in Saudi Arabia just because they're poor.
Learning a language should be an elective for students. (We had a choice of Persian or Arabic at Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur). Unless the Arabization brigade wants to keep the masses working as labor in these Gulf countries, there is no need for compulsory Arabic. Promote math and science as compulsory subjects if this country has a chance to come out of the third-world lifestyle.
After 70 years Pakistan is still searching for its own identity... And faltering in the endeavour miserably. How do people get such ideas... ? Very short sighted move. The language we speak is like the air we breathe, it's no different. It's only through directing the air in a specific way when we exhale we make sound & language.
European countries school children learn at-least one foreign language besides English. Means 3 languages: Native + English + Optional. Dr. sahib is making hue and cry on this; he should have known how Hebrew was revived from a dead language to National language. Arabic is part of Muslim civilisation and culture, why not he is accepting it, he is now enemy of his own mentor Eqbal Ahmad, what a pity.
We are so obsessed with enforcing other languages and suppressing our own. We lost Bangladesh because we wanted to suppress Bengali. Even our national anthem is all Persian.
@@imgguru1277 What he's trying to say is that we never promote our regional languages like sindhi punjabi pashto etc. Even urdu was not a native language of Pakistan, people from bengal never really connected with urdu and it was only shoved down their throats...

When Nehru said "Hindi will be national language of India" Tamil Nadu not only rejected but they started to say we want tamilnadu a separate nation. Nehru gave equal importance to all languages.
As a muslim majority country it doesn't mean that we can only progress by learning Arabic. Arab ky log aap say Achi Arabic language ko samjtey Hain Kia vo aik ideal Muslims hian state away not at all It is pertinent to mention here that maximum Arab countries including Saudi Arabia their all educational institutions is running on modern English based learning system. By spending whole life teaching Quran Hadees our Molana didn't speak Arabic with Arabs. Ko nation apni language ki respect krti hay wahi nations my world may no 1 Hain like Germany, France, Australia, Russia, China America etc. Nations ki taraqi may education Foundation and pillars Ka kaam krti ha, Agar Pakistani educational system ko modernize and sab keleay equal nhi Kia Gaya to Bo waqt qareeb hay ky ham apni identity loose kr dain gai aur hamari new generations apny rich cultural moral ethics and history ko bhol kr world may only slaves say ziada inki koi hasiat nhi Hogi.
It makes much more sense to strengthen pakistani identity of students by providing deep understanding of urdu language and additionally teaching farsi to point out the development of the official language of pakistanis against the background of a past lingua franca. We should stop associating ourselves with the arab world and start identifying ourselves with our own history and language.
Although Arabic is language of Islam but it does not fulfill the need of strong education system today. The main topic is "Education" not Arabic. The senator should focus on modern Education which is the key to survive in the world
Urdu should be declared the sole official and national language of Pakistan. And, the Roman script for Urdu language should be adopted, so that Urdu language can easily be used for the medium of instruction and even at government and judicial level. Script doesn't make any difference to any language, so I think linguist should think about making modified form of Roman script for Urdu language. Turkish was also written in Perso-arabic script, but later Turkish government eliminated this script and implemented a modified form of Roman script which, in turn, surprisingly facilitated huge jump in literacy rate from 30% to 95% within a span of a year.👍
I'm sorry, I think Urdu should be made a little less important. Regional languages should be promoted as well as promoting Urdu. Whereas Roman script of Urdu is considered, I think it's an controversial issue, I'm not in support of this, I think that would be kind of cultural slavery, that decision was very unpopular, even among the moderate and secular Turks not to mention the religious Turks. English should be promoted as it's an international language.
@@maxpayne3628 Who told you English is an international language. English is natively spoken only in 5 countries, and these are UK, USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand. Native language should be developed and promoted, where as English should be learned only as a second language.
Few years ago (not sure if still) news in Arabic used to be broadcast which hardly anyone would listen. Now how the students gonna learn and understand Arabic as for the last 73 years our students are still struggling to understand English. Instead of improving English and improving our educational standards, don’t know what we want to do.
I'm Indian and we never force anyone in India to learn any language. Language is very personal choice. Nothing wrong in learning Arabic. But truth is English is dominant language of world when it comes to science and engineering. So learning mothertongue and improving English should have highest priorities. After that, you can learn any extra language.
Janab you are among few Pakistanis who speak up their mind. It's unfortunate that the political class is so insensitive and irresponsible that it does not understand what it is doing to Pak. Please keep up speaking about what you think is right for Pak.May be someday they will realize. We this side of border want Pak to progress , trust me a very vast majority desire it.
Once I met an Arab guy who was head of a big institution, He told me "if Pakistani's learn to speak Arabic they will rule the whole middle East" currently Egyptians are working on big positions in middle east.learning any new language is a skill and learning any new skill make you superior to others.
There are countless Indians (Hindus) working at high positions in Middle East. Even White Europeans too. In fact, Burj Khalifa was built by non-Muslim European engineers. Science, engineering has nothing to do with religion/language. If Pakistanis have skill they will definitely triumph in world. Not because of religion/language.

I have a question if anybody wish to to US or UK then he will have to study english also. Further is not acceptance of pakistan that till date Pakistanis not understood the holy book quran..
Thing is we teach English forcefully so it makes it difficult to argue against forcing any other language. Though English is so mixed in urdu and popular culture which calls for an exception.
prof. hoodbhoy, is it possible that fawad choudhary and pakistani polity secretly believes that arabic is a better and more efficient computer programming language? 😀
Mr Hoodbhoy what would you say for new education policy of india wherein upto class 5th I think only the students will study their mother tongue or choice of language, after that only will be allowed as per the student's interest any stream out of science maths arts commerce geography.

The Pakistanis are predominantly of Indo-Aryan ancestry. Why don't Pakistanis acknowledge their ancestry and ancestral language, Samskrit and stop speaking a language with predominantly supplanted Parsi, Turkish and Arabi words rather than the indigenous Indo-Aryan words?
The analysis by PH is largely correct, and I concur with that. However, I'd much rather keep the study of Arabic as mandatory, particularly the classic Arabic aka Jahiliyyah Arabic. Muslims actually don't understand Quran. And they go through teachers who have a vested interest in reinterpreting Quran in light of traditions, rather than the other way round. I can tell you the core language can be learned very quickly by the Urdu speaker; Dr Israr created a six month course, and it is a good course, purely on pedagogical grounds. So my argument is that benefits exceed the costs.
@@Jam4ever-345 Thank you for your interest in my reply. The term Jahiliya is not necessarily pejorative. It is a synonym for classic Arabic. It simply refers to period before Islam.
Our children at the same time learn 4 languages 1. Punjabi 2. Urdu 3 Arabic 4. English. Is it beneficial as children can learn upto 7 different languages in a day? Or an extra load on our innocent Children?

Jinnah imposed urdu on pakistani people and sowed the seeds for the birth of Bangladesh. Now by imposing arabic , pak is taking to the same direction ! This law imposing arabic on pak people was writen , debated and passed in English !
I don't agree with the Arabic of the Quran being too complicated. Yes, modern Arabic, like any other modern languages has transformed quite a bit but understanding classic Arabic is not difficult at all.
Introducing Arabic is purely going to reduce sectarianism in terms of Quran Understanding. SECONDLY Arabic is one of the major languages to work in Arab Countries
Your own Prophet Muhammad was illiterate. Moreover, the father of Arabic grammar was born a hundred years after Muhammad's death. The vowels did not exist during Muhammad's time I don't know what you Pakistanis think learning Arabic will do to you. The "Rasm" of the Koran does not have vowels. It only has components. The vowels were added later, like in 1924 with the Cairo edition of the Koran.
A discussion by secularists and the initiative is politically motivated. The move to make learning Arabic mandatory is a good one but not for all the justifications offered by the government. It would benefit learning Urdu since Arabic is a major source language like Latin is to English. Above all, it would go some way toward enabling students to understand the Quran if not thoroughly. The employability argument though is not valid. What is valid is uncovering why local/regional languages are neglected. Surely, they deserve to be studied as well!
The indigo wolf. Thats what Pakistanis are trying to be. They say they are Turkish sometimes they want to be Arabic. They have forgotten that their forefathers were all Hindus, once upon a time forcibly converted to Islam. Also, does it matter what faith u believe in? At the end of the day there is only one god that everyone has a different imagination about. I think the nation needs to sit down, relook at its priorities, especially their duty towards the poor citizens of the country and work towards uplifting them, rather than keep creating nuisance in the name of religion.
When UAE is going to Mars, and Saudi Arabia doing things to educate all locals for all jobs in 30- 40 years when oil runs out and population can survive, how forward thinking it is to teach other language which is not universal, for a small nation to survive 30 years from now how for thought idea is this?

@Fareed Waseem Learning science is not the question at all. Here we talk about forcing language. If any student dont want to learn English why you people forcing English to him making English compulsory for him. We don't have a right to force any thing on students. We need to give right to students to leran language which they think is right for them. English Arabic French Spanish. No Arabic English. Please don't do hypocrisy these people like hoodbhoy always criticise molvis on arabic. But never ever criticise their own agenda on English.
I think Classical Arabic is not that problematic. My problem is not with this decision. It's an overall good decision. My problem is I think this an politically motivated decision in order to run away from other domestic issues which has not to be thought thoroughly hence the good things about this are almost negated. Is there an good classical Arabic teaching system? I recommend the darus ul lugahti Arabiyya, it's a very good book provided it has a good teacher. As a Kashmiri, I know an very good Arabic teacher locally who teachs in such a way that it's not even exhaustive and we used to love studying Arabic from him. I also think minorities should be exempt from this law. However, have they thought this thoroughly? That's the big question which Pakistanis should ask, practicing as well as non-practicing Muslims should ask this question.
