Burqa gives more confidance to female and do speak out as they want. I have also been teaching for the past 35 years and it is much better to have female who are covered according to the way of Islam.

Burqa doesnot mean peechy rakha jaey, it is just a choice of cloth that someone is wearing. aagr aap ki burqa = peechy ki logic ko lia jaey to phr revealing clothing = invite for men to see them? No, a piece of clothing does not generally have big meaning like the meaning Hoodbhoy is giving to it. This is painful even to endure this interview. Women stay trapped in bondage because men remain fallen. They remain fallen because they inherit an impoverished culture. In this impoverished culture, religion simply regress. Few decades ago, putting on this absurdity on women used to be the hallmark of the lower classes. Now the middle-class joined this class. "Past is not past yet, past is present.' In the absence of any intellectual development with the general political failures, the past asserts with rage. In between the 19th century lunacy and the current Islamic hysteria, there was a brief interlude the professor talks about. Lunacy is here to stay. Poor women end up paying the price for men falling from grace. A tragedy!

Pakistan and every country running like Pakistan needs people like you only then we'll understand women are also human and capable of doing any thing that human can. Pakistan can become very successful if our mothers are educated and live like a human, feel all human emotions and have passion for knowledge and not afraid of trivial things. Pakistan was made in the name of Islam and yet there is no Islam. Islam doesn't teach inequality and injustice, it doesn't teach to hide women from men, the only body parts we need to hide from one another are our private parts. Hiding hair, face, neck, feet and hands is totally unreasonable I mean if it's a woman's choice to hide everything (except face) then it's her choice everyone should respect her choice but if she is forced to do it or was brought up in a way that made her to believe hijab was part of Islam and she should obey then as a human we need to help her and tell her the truth. Islam is a lovely religion but many of its followers are very ignorant of Islamic interpretation and are very extremists.

Let me play the devil's advocate. All men as well as non-burkha-wearing women still dress according to some social standard. I wont go to office wearing banyan and boxers, or something ultra colorful and fancy, like the attire we wear to weddings. So who gets to decide which standard is to be followed, the western one, the conservative local one, the liberal local one, or the religious one? PS: I'm socially quite liberal, and agree with Prof. Hoodbhoy in this issue. I'm arguing against my own opinion here.

Western liberalism and Islamic conservatism are two sides of same coin when we see the conflicts from the lens of "individual freedom". In fact "liberalism" is wrongly adopted word in contemporary western politics and is misleading meaning-wise. The most suitable words for western liberalism I can think of is "ant-conservatism" or "anti-religiosity" and is "dictatorial" in nature. I respect Hoodbhoy for his effort in modernizing Muslim community, but I oppose his affiliation to western liberal politics.

Respected Sir, being a scientist can you please back your comments by any solid data? What was ratio of female inclusion in higher education in 1960's and now a days. Dont you think women coming to universities 30-40 (My parents era) years back were from affluent or middle class urban families and now due to increased access girls from rural backgrounds are also joining higher education. I do agree that a lot of conservatism and Islamic symbolism was brought in during Zia's regime and we are still getting radicalized.
