Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

Just so you know. A good rule of thumb is to tack the housing ends on dead last. Any gussets or additional weld on parts should be completely installed before you weld your ends on. This allows the tubes to warp with out any misiliment to your axles.

Actually the reason a 9 is the preferred rear is that gear changes can be done at the track in 15 min and an 8 has to be torn down to change them. They are also supported by gear manufacturers in many forms, ie lightweight, heavy duty off road and virtually every gear ratio you can dream up.
@MatthewBerginGarage
@MatthewBerginGarage 6 лет назад
The real difference between the 8.8 and the 9 inch is the fact that the pinion gear is supported at both ends. So the 9 inch is way stronger than the 8.8. The 8.8 is still plenty strong though. I added those ends to my 8.8 so I could run a spool. Much better than the C clip eliminators.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 лет назад
yeah I could see them having less pinion deflection. It usually the ring gears that fail though.
@MatthewBerginGarage
@MatthewBerginGarage 6 лет назад
I have seen an 8.8 pinion snapped but not on anything I own. My 8.8 will do the job unless I get carried away with my 4.7 L Teksid build ( AKA John Mihovetz's Mustang ) but I would need to win the lottery. :-)

Need to have that housing checked for straightness after you welded those gussets on and..welded the tubes to the housing.. The 8.8 may not be as bad to bend.. But a stock 9"housing is horrible to move all over place after welding
@lesgray3355
@lesgray3355 6 лет назад
Kevin Luck totally agree! Housing ends should always be done after any other welding on the housing, brackets, braces, etc.
@Thefabforums

straight as it gets...
@lesgray3355
@lesgray3355 6 лет назад
More than likely is plenty enough straight to never cause a problem but I personally prefer to weld on housing ends last. And also we use a 1.25”alignment shaft for maximum stiffness to ensure perfect alignment.
@robssm2
@robssm2 6 лет назад
@@lesgray3355 i agree.. we use a 1.5" bar because we actually had a rear end redo over about a half inch tweak we missed on a crown vic rear going on a buggy.. because it was so long one of our guys could feed in the rod so it looked ok. 😕😔kept pulling and couldn't figure it out or fix it. if it's simple you missed something. other then that hell yes a stock 9" isn't worth the trouble an 8.8 31 sp with 9" big bearing ends beats a 9 everytime.

The majority of YT 8.8 narrowing videos show someone cutting the tubes, which is the cheap (as opposed to inexpensive) way to do this. As Kyle said the point is not just to narrow the housing but to get rid of the c-clips and add larger bearings at the ends. You're likely going to buy axles anyway so spend the extra time and money to do it right.

Hey, so I paid to have this done. Here is the thing, I changed out my rear studs last week and my axles basically came right out. Just unbolted the bracket to the caliper. Is that the only thing holding the axle in, it was this done wrong? I would really appreciate the answer. My life is dependent on it. I liked and subscribed. Thanks

so now you just put in axles from a 9 inch with the same spline count as your original 8.8 axles? Is the axle length gonna be perfect? and what about the drum brakes that would be present like on a f150 ? I have a passenger side axle that slides into the diff to far and causes the c clip to fall halfway into the diff while still halfway holding the axle( scared its gonna throw the axle and c clip gonna tear up gears in diff) im thinking about doing this to my f150 just worried about how those axles and brakes all line up

Bing difference between the 8.8 and the 9 is with the smaller ring gear and pinion only 2 teeth mesh at a time and with a 9 inch 3 teeth mesh at a time. It's not just the axle bearings.

Needle bearing? That’s a roller bearing. You could just buy a Moser M88 axle housing, all of that is done with bigger stronger components including much bigger main caps and hardware.

I have no experience with the 8.8 [we did not get them here in Oz], the C Clip axles do not inspire confidence but as for the rest I guess it depends on what gear sets are available. And what size the pinion ends up in shorter gear sets. The 9" has not been made for 40 years, it has always been an overhyped thing. IF you throw away all the Ford parts and fit aftermarket they are ok, BUT the pinion is too low and that drags horsepower big time and fries the oil as well. And they are so bloody heavy! In comparison too a B/W Dana 78 series they are 35lb heavier, all unsprung weight. I used them in road race car for some years and never actually broke one,, but regular inspection was required and I junked a couple of gear sets as they had cracked. The clip shows '9" ends" but which bearing? Tapered bearing? double row bearing? large diameter or small as they had several styles. And the old Ford axles have a very bad habit of cracking outside the bearing at the shoulder the bearing pushes up too. In mine I used GMH axles cut and resplined as they are far better material. Though I did break one of those outside the bearing as well so cracktested them regularly after. Though it was probably the axles street use before that did the damage. They were from a 1 ton ute. But for any racecar a floater is the only way. As for those reinforced housings? Really use some engineering sense. Using very wide wheels with huge negative offset is plain stupid. Make the axles longer and use a central or better positive offset wheel and you do not need any of that reinforcing wank except for off roading,,, maybe! A longer axle too has more area to 'wind up' and not break like the ultra short ones favored. Painting a line from spline to bearing will show eventually how much they will wind up before breaking.

It is...I didn't say the nine inch isn't good. I didn't even say the 9 inch isn't better. I was just trying to make the point that the 8.8 is a very strong rear and in most cases it isn't worth the upgrade.
@robertford1329
@robertford1329 6 лет назад
The 9 inch also has much more friction/drag because of the big offset from center. The use of a good cover with the cap supports and some billet caps the 8.8 is a very strong unit, after all it was basically copied from the chevy 12 bolt

"If the C-clip breaks or the axle breaks the axle can just slide out." Okay, so I get that the C-clip is the retition system for the axle and the statement is absolutely true with drum brakes. BUT when running disc brakes... The axle is behind the brake rotor and what's over the rotor? The brake caliper. Now granted the brake caliper's purpose was never to retain the axle, but in the event of an axle break wouldn't the caliper prevent the axle from sliding out of the housing since it sits over the brake disc which the axle is behind? You can't get the axle out when disassembling without pulling off the caliper.

c clips with disc is even worse.. broken axle locks up by wedging the rotor into the brake and spins the car, sometimes it flips.. there is a reason why many tracks are saying no c clip and no c clip eliminators. just weld on the ends and be done lol

I have done a bunch of these and I've never had to do anything special when welding the cast housing....It is a little tricking with all the contamination though.

I have cut an inch off some stock length moser axles in the past and there was plenty of spline

Who makes those 9inch ends?
@jgilbert4756
@jgilbert4756 5 лет назад
Those looked like Strange ends. The are the shortest ones I've seen. Allows the most width to be cut out. H1137 is big ford 9" pattern and H1138 is original 8.8 pattern. Let's you use stock mustang brakes.

So question. I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna LE AWD MiniVan. I’m building my rig for rally racing and off road with rock climbing in mind. I need a lot more flex and reliability for the rear end. I have a loaded axle beam suspension set up. That’s stock. Also, a differential with cv axles. I am looking for a axle or differential that has the capability of a air locker. Dual brake caliper set up. And sway bar hook up for when I’m going super fast. And of course sway bar disconnect system that’s easy to do for rock climbing. My engine will make 400HP + and 350+ torque. It’s going to have a SuperCharger and will be hooked up to a E352F 5-speed manual transmission with a matching T-Case from a 05 RAV4. Apparently I have to keep the 2.929 final drive that the rear differential has! That’s because the 4.14 Something Final Dr. that the transmission/tea case has apparently the rear axle has to be lower than that I don’t know why but that’s what everyone is telling me. If that information that I told you do you by chance know of any differential or axle I can install for the rear end? Thank you.

I’m doing 8.8 with 35 moser. Sorry but this is my first go at this I’m having a company do the rearend and I’m sorry but could u be alittle more detail like what parts exactly. Man any help I could get that would be greatly appreciated. Love the videos keep them up

@@MichaelGreen-ox4lp yeah you just basically cut off the 8.8 housing end and weld on some 9 inch ends. The weld on peices can be purchased from companies like moser or strange. This mod just let's you use a 9 inch style axle bearing versus the 8.8 c-clip elimnator type of bearing. As for brakes you will just order the 9 inch brake brackets...companies like strange, wilwood and aerospace have options.

What wire did you use to weld to that cast pumpkin? Won't the weld break right around the cast?

Good work, Kyle. I've never looked into it, but always wondered about the difference between an 8.8 and 9" (other than the obvious .2" lol). This video summed it right up. Thanks for showing the alignment tips.👍 Looks good, man! Also, I may have missed it, but who is the kickass song by? Thanks.

Are you kidding? Bro its common sense to make you bearing ends the very last weld on the axel... you lost all credibility . That's a rookie mistake caught on camera. I cant believe you posted this as a how to video. This video will prematurely ruin alot of rear ends..... the rookie welding the bracing should have told you that.
@dcc5931
@dcc5931 2 года назад
How long did the front pinion bearing last? I can't see it lasting very long as it looks like you welded the brace where the bearing sits in the housing.

I have a question, when you weld ford 9 inch ends on an 8.8 rear axle do you use ford 9 inch axle shafts then or keep the ford 8.8 ones? trying to figure out if i do this and narrow a rear end from an explorer if i can then use cut to length aftermarket ford 9 inch axle shafts to make it all work. I figure if they are all 31 spline it should fit but im not totally sure and cant seem to find an answer.

when you order the shafts you just tell them it has 9 inch ends on an 8.8
