@@MotoringBoxTV When I put it in for a service at 95,000km at our local garage who are also Ford dealers, the army trained female mechanic who took a shine to it suggested she changed all the flexible pipework around the motor as they are inclined to get brittle over time. From memory I think there are 14 in all. This done she flushed the system and the first thing I noticed was the better fuel consumption and a much cooler engine after a long run. The cost of the pipe replacement was around $250

I quite like the AU , when I first moved to NZ from South Africa , where I was a police officer , I joined the New Zealand police , and they had a few AU's as patrol; cars , but the majority were VS and VT Commodores , so the AU was one of the first NZ police cars I drove , but I have to admit the Commodore was much better as a patrol car . every police car in NZ now is a VF or ZB Commodore , I don't know what the next one will be .

I remember fitting those phone presenters when I worked for a ford dealership back in the day. They also had a handsfree loom that came with them for the nokia phones. The most popular phone in its day. From memory their was plug under the console they plugged straight into. Never saw that table though, thats awesome👍 they must be rare.
@MotoringBoxTV
@MotoringBoxTV 4 года назад
That's cool. Your dealership probably had the tables, but I guess they didn't really need to be installed as such. I've heard about the plug too - I'll have to do something with it, like install a flush-mount USB charge port.
@gregmyatt9932
@gregmyatt9932 4 года назад
MotoringBox that would be great if you can do that. They also had a Motorola loom that was harder to fit as it went right up the back into the stereo system and a microphone that poked out at the top of the A pillar. Those chrome skirts are very similar to an actual skirt that was on the LTD and fairlane ghia as an option. Fitted some of those aswell. Fitted allot of the twin rear spoilers on the XR models as the option, you dont see many of those id say they are pretty rare aswell. All in all the AU was a very sorted out car by the 3rd series and very reliable.

My '07 BF XR6 had a badly peeling front right fender when I bought it, like someone had spilt brake fluid on it or some corrosive liquid that peels clear coat. Also had a dent in the top. Got a new fender for $50 with next to no damage aside from a few minor scratches which are practically invisible from a guy wrecking one nearby. Was the same colour (lightning strike, same colour as the AU here) with no paint fade. Replaced that and now it looks like new. So it's not impossible to find replacement panels, I'd definitely have a crack at searching for some before spending $200 on fender flares or getting it repainted/repaired.

I miss my AU more and more by the day. It doesn't matter that it had a million issues, it was just so good to drive and it was so damn comfy! Even though I manual swapped it, it was still soooo much comfier than my Honda Civic that I have today. I reckon an XR8 might be for me in the near future

Those chrome things are a good idea. The bumper on my AU GHIA was nearly factory condition however I loaned my Fairmont to my dad and he lives way out in the sticks, he accidentally hit a wombat while driving home one evening, so I’m going to have to fix the front bumper now :(

cant say i agree with the chrome strips but then again im not much for chrome period! but you build your car for you :-) and the blinker reminds me of a funny moment in my life, i had an EL Falcon who's passanger fender blinker use to pop out at speeds of 100kph (i was too lazy to put a bit of glue or something so i left it lol) i was traveling home from Brisbane with a mate when i hear that blinker flapping about, long story short i get sick of pulling over and putting it back in & i get sick of it flapping about so a plan was hatched! my mate says "dun worry bout pullin over I'm pretty sure i can reach it" so at 120kph he's out the window and I'm in the drivers seat hanging on to him, but we got it!, then we pulled into a servo 5 minutes later anyway to refuel lol

I got a guy that is on Facebook to replace my head lining on my Ford Territory. He came to me and it cost me $250. It is now better than new. In the factory the material is not wrapped around the edge. This causes fraying. He wrapped it around the edges. I think your AU is in good enough condition to warrant spending this amount. This would make a big difference to a car that is in otherwise decent condition. Keep up the great work. The videos are awesome.

Yeah mine has come apart in a few spots but is still holding on at the moment. I still cant believe that they used the same fabric on the FG. My dad used to have an ED and that was made out of a nice velour material. I'm tempted to used some tack nails or some adhesive spray as I dont wont to spend money to replace the lining.

Ford were pretty sneaky making the front support for the table being the auto shifter. This makes unusable when you put it in drive. I love (and hate) old Fords, I had a 2002 Focus until recently, which was a great car, but with some quality niggles that are typical Ford.

@@MotoringBoxTV yep all good mine is the AU2 Forte,but unfortunately it says nil stock on 1 eBay and 1 set left on another showing the same picture. I'll keep checking thanks. Mine sister-n- law owned it before I bought it with 186,000 on the clock. I've put Ford Territory wheel caps on it using the Territory wheel nuts .They look way better than the Falcon wheel centres you find on the AU Ute's.
