I review and compare my 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor to the 2011 Chevy Caprice PPV to see which is the better car. I review their specs and provide a behind-the-wheel driving experience of both cars. Both clearly have their pros and cons and both are amazing cars but one has to be better than the other. Join me to find out which it is!

Yea I love the vic from a visual and traditional standpoint. But the Explorer Interceptor is a better vehicle in every way, more powerful, faster, better handling, space, view, safety, traction and while they looked ridiculous in the first gen but after a few facelifts I think they're a more imposing presence then a vic when in police spec

I flipped many former highway patrol, and city cars. 90% of them being CVPI's. We would drive the Fords from Denver where we picked them up, to San Antonio. Never, never did we have a one of them leave us sitting along side the highway waiting for a wrecker. We found the common failing is the alternator and some rear end issues. I had one that the fuel pump (located in the fuel tank) went out. That was the biggest expense of all of them. Most of the Fords we bought had anywhere from 80000 to 125000 miles on them. Another thing that was not mentioned here is the idle hours. Ford advises the idle hour is equal to 33 miles. You can find some of these cars that will have in excess of 9000 idle hours. Again, never did seem to effect the performance though. If you are not familiar with how to obtain the hours, push the "trip meter" twice. The second push will give you the hours. That Chevy looked good, but for my money, I'll stay with the Ford Crown Victoria.

you're making me want to get another Caprice. Car to car, without considering price & repair cost/frequency, the Caprice is far better. As a GM BBody owner I'm more a fan of the Caprice PPV but I love the Panther platform for being so old school and simple. I have used both on patrol. The Crown Vic is more comfortable and has a better ride. The Caprice is a beast, rides like a rock and is uncomfortable on a 12 hour shift. That riding like a rock feeling is called handling in the rest of the world. American cars are still poorly built barges, which wallow and can't steer with accuracy. The panel and internal components gaps create squeaky sounds very quickly.

Vic is just reliable and cheap and power wise does what is needed just fine. So I prefer the Vic. It's so easy simple not so flashy. There's a reason cops drove them for so long. And as a vic driver I love em. I can work on them I don't have to take them to the shop I don't have to pay out the ass Auto Parts or labor and to be honest there's no shortage in Parts they are everywhere. So to say the least Vic is better car. Just cuz the Caprices has more horsepower doesn't mean anything it's all about the driver not the vehicle. Hey man, first of all, great avatar! One of my favorite comedians. The dude's a genius! As for the Displacement on Demand, there are some short-term fixes like a DOD disabler that plugs into the OBD port and keeps the DOD turned off, there is also a oil screen on the back of the engine that sometimes gets clogged and is suspected of causing DOD issues. The only real fix however seems to be to delete the DOD system. Kits range from $300 - $1200 depending on how far you want to go into the engine, but the real cost is in labor. -Chris

You will not find another car besides the crown vic that is as cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, easy to find parts for, and has the space a vic does, with still decent speed. These newer unibody police cars are really expensive to maintain, they don't hold up in a crash like a crown vic and there's no room in them, besides the ford explorer or tahoe. The tahoes are complete duds. The explorers have great speed even without ecoboost. The only thing I can knock the crown vic for is how slow it is and how plain it is, but everything else is spot on. The ground clearance in a vic is another staple that you won't find in another car. The chargers won't even clear a small ice chunk on the road and they bottom out on uneven ground. Good luck even clearing a curb let alone going off road in a charger.

If I were trying to catch someone, I'd use the Chevy/Holden...if I wanted to smash another vehicle off the road, I'd want the Vic. The Vic is also tried and true (meaning it's easy to fix and maintain). My experience with vans was similar...the Ford van I found the steering "imprecise", but I could drive over huge rocks and smash any other vehicle into pieces, as necessary. When I was later issued a Chevy van, I could outrun and outmaneuver everything. Although the Chevy was more comfortable, I didn't think it would have held together as well in the event of some unforeseen "road trauma"....

That's probably because it's built by Holden (GM's Australian division) A much newer, solid, modern, etc alternative to the technically dated Crown Vic Although the Vic was a solid product, it was the lack of modernization that killed it. The Caprice, well in Australia it was the complete opposite of pursuit vehicles 🤣 Same chassis designed & engineered by Holden (Zeta) Also went on becoming the underpinnings of Chevrolet's 5th Gen Camaro Hence why replacement parts are expensive, because of the Australian production.

The Caprice in Australia and New Zealand is the top level of the GM Holden range, Aussies Cadillac. In fact Aussie GM refused to import the Cadillac (which nearly happened but was scuttled at the last minute) because they couldn't see the point in importing a GM flag ship to compete with their own GM flag ship. The Caprice PPV is de-luxuried or downscaled version. I used to have a 2002 model.

With a performance tune, ported heads, and a set of stage 2 cams, my 2011 CVPI is pushing 310HP at the wheels. Thats considered a minimal modification for a CV. I have a friend who dropped a 5.4L from a wrecked Navigator, slipped right in with no swapping motor mounts or trans. Never seen his dyno numbers, but his Crown Vic is dangerously fast! I spent $3k on the car, and $2.5k on the build, he spent $3.5 for the car, and $3k on the build. Both would out perform the Chevy. For the price of the car, repairs, and mods, the Crown Vic is the way to go.

I'm on my 2nd Crown Vic first was a 2000 bought it with 53,000 miles in 2012 kept it 5 years put another 50,000 miles on it with nothing more than a brake job, tires, plugs and oil changes. My 2nd is a 2002 Lx fully loaded bought it with 63,000 miles on it last year (mint condition) and have done nothing but get tires and oil changes so far. Despite the plastic intake manifold that will eventually start leaking and need to be replaced I have never owned a more reliable car this includes the 4 Toyota's I have previously owned. There is plenty of room under the hood for tinkering and repairs, comfort and ride in the civilian models is as smooth as it gets. I upgraded to a modern stereo system with blue tooth etc and it sounds great with the original speaker system that came with the car. I have considered the Police interceptor for the slightly higher horsepower but decided against it for the sake of comfort and options. I added a K&N intake system and upgraded the exhaust which seemed to boost my power a little and my gas mileage if I stay off it on long cruises. By far the best overall car I have owned in 36 years of driving. Sure, it looks like an old mans car but old men usually don't tear down the Highway at 90-100 mph cranking Heavy Metal tunes.

@@hullinger Taurus police cars are pretty nice. I would think they would be miserable to patrol in with the low roof line and multiple blind spots. The powertrain on the Taurus is a complete bare to work on for major repairs. Electric power steering rack fails around 100-120k. Transfer case has some issues and the water pump when they fail leak antifreeze into the engine oil with the potential of destroying the engine.

Yeah the Vic is slower than most offerings , but there are parts everywhere, they are body on frame, you can swap any power train into it, the programming is simple....I lowered and enhanced the suspension for forty dollars . Mustang gt500 rear springs and cut a coil out of the front stockers it also eliminates the 80 mph drive shaft vibe as it improves pinion angle. 90 % of mustang engine upgrades fit or work, the trans and engine can be removed in an hour, it's a very balanced platform.....most importantly the parts last a very very long time and even when they fail it can still be limped home.

It was interesting to see our Aussie Caprice in U.S. cop car form, the interior is the base model Omega not the standard top spec as here, also AFM was dropped here in Australia due to the reliability issues. GM Holden spent 1 Billion dollars AU in developing the VE making the all new Zeta platform it sits on and everything else unique to the vehicle,previously all Holdens from the Commodore era were based on Opel platforms making the VE the most Australian Holden of all. Sadly GM pulled the pin and Holden stopped local car manufacturing at the end of 2017. I have a VE Ute and wouldn't part with it, I know there are guy's in the States who are importing them and converting to left hand drive and people who have them love them and wonder why they were never put on the market. Police cars in the late 70s through the early 90s had full roll cages and could protect those people inside the vehicle from major injuries but when they wanted better MPG requirements the roll cages had to go because a roll cage adds about 500 pounds to the vehicle back in those days.
@jonathanrabbitt
@jonathanrabbitt 5 лет назад
The large A-pillar cross-sections are probably not as much for roll-over; more for offset frontal crash performance. Same with the raked windshield; which reduces the bending stresses at the top of the A pillar. Both are about improving cabin strength by reducing the risk of the A-pillar buckling under the offset frontal impact. I think that during this era, they were chasing better impact performance for the 64km/h offset crash test that was introduced for the published ANCAP safety ratings; even though only the 56km/h test was legally mandated. This "feature" was always merited a complaint from reviewers in Australia for the Commodore/Statesman/Caprice architecture, right from their launch in mid 2006.
