I know this was almost a year ago but THANK you for posting this. I have been googling for weeks to find this exact sound!!!! My 2012 F150 started this few weeks. Now I know exactly what needs replacing.
I have 17 Fusion Sport with 119k miles. Same sound plus random intermittent loss of assisted steering. Dealer cleaned some water out of motor. Wanted $4200 to change it out. Thanks for the info!
I drove it. I'm not sure I'd take it on the highway, but I drove it a couple days around town while waiting for my appointment and was just fine. It actually made some weird loud sound when I would take off, and it steered pretty heavy, but to my surprise, having the dealership reprogram it, fixed these issues and it drove great.
Thank you. I have that exact sound in my 2018 Escape. Ford dealership wants $2200.00 to fix. Do you have any information on how often the EPAS goes bad? I only have 53k miles on mine, but you had 117k? So are they going bad every 50k or so?
Finally! you diagnosed the fault. Wish you slipped the belt off the motor just to prove the bearing. And then greased the bearings or pulled to see what failed in the bearings.
Awesome! Did you have the same sound I did? Seems it's very rare, couldn't find any videos or comments in forums that were similar which I why I made this video. SOOO glad it helped someone! :)
I know I'm late to the party. But my 2013 MKS Ecoboost started making this noise, a few months ago. It was right after I drove through a flooded road. To be fair, all the roads were flooded. It's consistently gotten worse. I knew it was the rack, cause it couldn't be anything else. Will be doing it my driveway this weekend. I'll be posting a how to video, when I'm done.
Hey I checked your channel and didn’t see a how to video. I believe my 2013 Taurus sho would have the same bearing and would like to know the part number
I wonder if im alone about this this, got a 2014 taurus limited. Sometimes, powersteering just stop but aint just stoping: its forcing to stay in the position, like its working perfectly fine, take a turn, and the wheel wont come back until im forcing it to do it. Cant fond anythings about it, located in quebec, canada
Unfortunately the whole rack is going bad most likely especially if u here the noise if u get the advace trac control light and service power steering etc trying pulling your powertrain control module relay u can find a diagram online should be unde your hood by battery I think taking it out for a while and putting it back in should get rid of the warning lights but maybe easier to steer but if it's still noisy probably will need new rack which suck I'm in the same situation om 2013 taurus price to fix it 2300 dollars crazy
So I was told my steering gear is out. Only symptoms I have so far is loose steering in the front. Car takes on every groove and goes in all kinds of directions. Steering ability has diminished and little skips when turning the wheel slow. I don't have this noise or a code. Was told it's not my gear, but the computer has become inoperable and is not communicating with the main computer. I'd assume I'm fucked right?
Sorry I'm just now seeing your comment and you've probably already fixed the problem....but....if you have the electric steering and it is a problem with communicating with the computer, I'd have the local Ford dealer reflash/sync it....I don't know what the correct term for it is, but after I replaced mine it didn't drive right until I took it to Ford and had them hook up their computer and sync/flash it so that it could recognize the new unit and work properly....cost around a hundred bucks unless you can get a nice tech to do it quick for free....only takes them a couple minutes. Loose steering is odd symptom because usually when the electric steering goes out in any way, it just locks up and becomes almost impossible to steer. Problem is, it is a "sealed system" so it doesn't matter much what the problem is (unless it just needs computer flash or an issue with the column) because the repair is the same for almost all issues in the EPAS, you have to replace the whole unit. Hopefully you got it fixed and it didn't cost ya much and I'm wasting my time typing this... haha :)
@@therealnomadtrading no it's not fixed yet. I've been stuck on this issue and the only place it's been was the dealer and received this diagnostic. I really do appreciate your opinion because I was wondering as well why I'm still able to steer even though it is shitty but it's driveabke and not locked up. I'll take it to another shop and see what they find and hopefully maybe it can be reflashed or synced. Job cost between 2800-3000 for part and labor. I'd like to change it myself but I'm worried about damaging the system before I get it flashed. Am I able to replace it myself and just take it to the dealer after to flash? There. Isn't risk to damage any of the components on the rack? If that's the case, that would surely save me a lot of moneu
@@therealnomadtrading So this is a plug and play kit but you do need an alignment after it’s installed? Also when all of that is done, can I drive it to Ford to get it programmed or it has to be towed?
@@King_Bari Yes it's plug and play and yes it has to be aligned. After they get it installed, yes you can drive it to Ford (at your own risk - disclaimer so you don't sue me lol) but yes I drove mine for a few days until Ford could get me in.... only took them a few minutes to get it programmed and I was on my way. Hope this helps!
I'm in the process of having to do it all over again, my remanned rack and pinion failed...luckily the parts are covered under warranty....but another 800 to a 1000 thrown away...perhaps I'll make an update video when I get the car back and the bills.
@therealnomadtrading rock auto has new ones made by ford they are the motorcraft brand but yeah it sucks having to do things twice. Thats why i always buy ford parts new
@therealnomadtrading im going to bring my to a shop because the rack works perfectly fine with 12v but for some reason shoots up to 24v module supply voltage then it cuts all assist so it might be a wiring issue
You mentioned that the problem is just in the bearings, so instead of replacing the entire EPAS, isn't there any way to just fix/replace the bearings and save money?
I asked the same question to my mechanic and he said for the labor to even get to the ball bearing, it'd be the same cost as just replacing the whole unit. 🤦
2014 mkz with 125k just started doing it. Ford dealer quoted me 2800. Cardone and others make rebuilds for what you paid. Thanks for opening it up. I thought it was in the motor but its on the lead screw. Bad deaign. Great video!!
Im a Honda dude just trying to get my fiances car back and running, and I gotta say this is the most knowledgeable and explained video Ive seen in a while. Thank you.
The first 2min into the video, me screaming " Please dont be the sound that my Exploder makes". But when he starts wiggling the steering wheel, all I hear is "$2k- $3k"
I have a 2012 Fusion that was making the same noise. Replaced rack and pinion and the noise went away but the steering is still hard. Took it to a local shop and he says that it was a bad rack, so I replaced it again and still hard to steer. He swears that we got 2 bad racks. Is there anything else to look for before I replace it a 3rd time?
Who replaced it? Ford dealer, or another garage? Electric rack just like mine? Once the electric rack is swapped they have to sync the computer...in my town, only Ford could do it, and it cost me $130 or so and it drove better after that. That was my experience. I do recall mine being much tighter and harder to steer right after I replaced it before Ford did the computer update/sync magic vudu
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2010 FORD FUSION 3.0 I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO WHEN I WOULD BACK UP IT WAS LIKE MY DRIVER SIDE WHEEL WAS STUCK !!, AND THE STAIRWELL WAS HARD TO TURN !!, FOR 2 SECONDS !!, BUT I THINK THE POWER STEERING WAS GOING BAD THEN !!, BUT A LOT OF FORD FUSIONS HAVE A STEERING ANGLE SENSOR !!, RIGHT UNDER YOUR STEERING WHEEL !!, BUT THE 2010 FORD FUSIONS DO NOT HAVE THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ON THE STEERING COLUMN !!, IT'S JUST A CLOCK SPRING THERE !!, BUT THERE IS A SPOT WHERE THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR SUPPOSED TO GO !!, BUT THERE IS NO STEERING ANGLE SENSOR THERE !!, AND THERE IS NO WIRE HARNESS !!, TO CONNECTED TO !!, NOW YOU CAN GO ON EBAY AND ORDER ONE BUT HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO CONNECT !!, WHEN THERE IS NO WIRE HARNESS !!, I BELIEVE FORD PUT THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR IN WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING UNIT !! . LIKE THEY DID THE 2011 AND UP !! .
You're welcome, and thanks for watching. Glad it helped, I had a heck of a time finding anything on it which prompted me to make that since I already had a channel. :)
JuST learned the hard way, bought 13 cmax with the issue, and I thought was the rack, but stupidly hoped it wont be such a big deal. Live and learn. costly mistake at auction. thanks for video
Save your money up it's costly amd when it breaks u will not be able to drive anywhere it has caused 4 accidents has an csp but it been over ten years and past 150 thousand miles that ford will no longer replace it
Sorry I'm just getting back to you...that sounds dangerous...if you have the electric steering then I bet by now you've had to replace it. I'm sorry to hear you had that problem....expensive and dangerous.
Considering the current cost of vehicles, is it viable to purchase these Tauruses cheap, go ahead and do the timing chain and pump DIY, the EASP system as DIY as possible and resell them for profit. I’ve heard people saying that the auto market might crash and vehicles will suddenly be much cheaper. Anyway, until/if then, a Taurus is a nice AWD vehicle. I’m ignoring any carbon buildup issues if theses are are only direct injection and not multiport.
I'm pretty sure I have the exact same mechanical issue. Do you know what might happen if I don't replace it soon? At the moment I have a budget and I can't afford it at this time
I'm sorry to hear that. Well if it makes the exact same sound when you turn the wheel, car on or off, it's very possibly the same thing. I had driven through high water before it started and I believe that was the root cause... a leaky seal allowed water to get in and rust out the bearings...I drove mine for quite a while like that because it wasn't affecting the power steering...just annoying grinding sound. If the actual motor goes out on the EPS, it gets dangerous....if it's just the bearings like mine you can probably drive on it for a bit until they eventually wear completely out...hard to say how long that would be. Drive at your own risk - disclaimer :) I didn't take mine on highways or high speeds just incase it failed completely but around town I drove it quite a while...probably a month or two before fixing it. Hope this helps.
I can tell you, once you hear that noise, you'll have at least 100 miles of driving before a total failure bearings will seize any movement. Happened to me.
Yeah my focus did the same thing this past Friday just ordered the part today hopefully have it fixed and programmed by Friday. Northeast Snow storm might delay it though.
100% I have this issue right now, driving me crazy. I was told this needs to be done by the Ford Dealer and reprogrammed by them as well, not liking that but let me know if you had to have the Power Steering Module reprogrammed by Ford.
You probably already found the answer...can't remember but I thought I put this in the end of the video, maybe not....anyway, the answer is yes...some mechanics have the tech to flash it or sync it but mine didn't...the car is drivable after it is replaced, just not optimized....so I drove mine straight to FORD and they quickly reprogrammed it for $130 bucks
I got a 2013 Ford Explorer it’s not throwing a code for mines either and it has the same sound when I turn the wheel when I go straight no sound !! but that’s the same noise I’m currently going through like it’s rubbing and mines got 98,000 miles
No, I don't have a life and this would be a big pain in the ass to do without a life....and it needs to be aligned after as well so I wouldn't be able to do that either. Mine is a 14 all wheel drive....if yours is similar and has the electronic steering it's probably the same one.
I have a 2014 Ford Fusion. Was making same noises and advance trak light came on as well as hillside assist. Then suddenly power steering went. It’s at ford now, just curious as to what you think issue might be or price to fix. Thanks in advance
great question....sorry I'm just getting back to ya....it is drivable...mine drove pretty tight and I was a bit worried, but the dealership hooking up their computer to flash it did wonders and it drove differently afterwards...but to answer you question, yes it is drivable.
Hi there, No, it was just the noise and I drove it quite a while with the noise.... if you lost all power steering, then it's almost certainly not the bearings but the motor itself.... either way the fix is the same and replacing the EPAS system should fix it right up. Sorry it took so long to get back to ya. Hope you get it fixed fairly inexpensively.
Good sweet Lord! That's a LOT. Thanks for watching and commenting and letting me know....glad I went around them then and only paid them to resync the computer. :) Sorry you paid so much though...that's crazy.
Hi there, it was drivable... it made a strange loud banging sound (I never figured out what it was), and the steering was very heavy, but I drove it a day or two around town until my appointment, and after they programmed it, all sounds went away and it drove great.
No, mine is a 14 so there is no warranty and it isn't under a recall...there were recalls for the EPAS...quite a few of them...but not for the 14 Taurus limited unfortunately
Are you sure it's got the electronic steering EPAS system? Also, I'm not really sure if you can buy just the bearings...Through parts stores like Autozone or through the dealership, the part (in my case ER1002) is the complete epas unit, there is no break down part numbers for the internal pieces. You may still be able to find them through a junk yard, or online like through Atlantic automotive which I believe is the company that rebuilds the units for autozone where I got mine....but there are a few companies autozone uses to get these remanned units, and they have access to the parts somehow, so contacting them might result in answers on how to get just the bearings....with some internet skills and persistance you may be able to track down the individual pieces. Good luck to you, hope this helps.
At first I thought that was my issue and hoped lubing the shaft or something simple would fix it but I wasn't so lucky. It FELT like it was in the shaft rubbing on something etc....I was shocked when it ended up being the bearings inside the EPAS unit honestly.
Good video. This winter (we live in Canada) our 2013 Taurus rack and pinion would not steer until the engine had warmed up. Turns out water had filled the cavity where the motor and that small belt is and was a block of ice until the engine had warmed it up. We have not been able to find a replacement yet. It was put back together and now make the same noise as on your video until we found a replacement. According to Ford they are year specific and we think it has to do with electrical plugins. The scrap yard tells me there a two different numbers for 2013, the newer version for me because the car was built after March 2013.
Did the new rack have any sort of upgrade to prevent moisture intrusion? I watched another video where a guy attributed the failure to the motor being to close to the catalytic converter without adequate shielding and cooking the substance/grease used to protect the circuitry and thus the moisture. His was a Ford Flex.
@@matthewmoore661 It has worked good until about 3 weeks ago. Sometimes works good and then steers hard. Have found another rack which we will replace when we get a chance
Mine is in the shop again because the re-manned rack I got from Atlantic has failed after a few years....the one I'm putting in it this time is slightly more expensive and different brand because Atlantic is out of stock indefinitely...I'll make a video updating all this...hope you got yours taken care of...
I can't remember off the top of my head but it tells in the video.... probably around the 9 minute mark I started talking about the costs and breaking it all down, if I remember correctly.
Yeah I'm not sure about your warranty, have to check with the dealership to see if you have a warranty that covers that issue or not. If you're lucky, perhaps. Mine is a 2014 so it's long past the warranty.
@@therealnomadtrading i bought my 2014 taurus and i got an extended warranty. i pay so much a month(actually i just paid it off in January) and it covers everything from drive train, transmission, engine, suspension to anything electrical on the car. the only it doesnt cover is brakes n tires.
@@stephancobb13 That's awesome! Wish I would've had that, sounds like you'll be set on this and not have to pay all the money out of pocket like I had to! :)
@@stephancobb13 definitely not. gotta save the money whenever possible, many things I'd rather buy than steering parts for my taurus and I bet you're the same! Hopefully you can get it done with the warranty.
Oh yeah? Sounds familiar. I could tell mine had been full of water at some point, but By the time I pulled it apart it had been a while, so I just had the debris and no lube etc. Never would've guessed driving through water was going to kill my power steering, but I won't make that mistake again.
I wonder if my electric power steering in my 2010 Ford fusion has water in the electric power steering !! . My car was sitting about for 2 months !! . I drove it up the street and back and parking it !! .
