Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he rolls through the day and replaces the front disk brake pads and rotors on a 2013 Fords Escape Titanium. Now this is a pretty simple job to do but it would be best before you handle this yourself to make sure you have the proper tools, equipment and manual. As always be safe!

Just want to add a thanks - this video and another one got me through my first brake job! Only hurdle to overcome was a piston that would not compress. Had to go to Auto Zone and rent a compression kit that would turn the piston while pushing on it. Worked like a charm and since rentals are free with deposit, cost me nothing! Unless I don't return it! ;)

Eric, this time last year I had to change my rotors and pads in the from of my Escape. I went with Brembo because that is what they sold at the place my son worked at. I got a super deal on them, or at least I thought. Over the course of the last year my brakes were getting worse and my front rotors were severely warped. I took off the front tires to find that these great Brembos (not), the pads were wore down to 2mm friction thickness and like I said earlier the rotors were warped. The place where I bought them from said that Brembo had some quality issues around that time and they did exchange everything for free. If OEM Ford ones were not so damn expensive I would have went that route. Well I have learned my lesson. Always go OEM.

Used to work in an electronics factory, and we used white heat sink compound. Just as nasty. People would play pranks by putting it on people's safety glasses on the bridge of the nose piece. Rule number one with that stuff, WIPE IT OFF DRY, DO NOT USE WATER OR IT WON'T COME OFF!

I too was initially taught to use anti seize. Many years ago, I got to meet a bendix rep. The rep told me anti seize is a petroleum product that deteriorates the rubber boots. Of course, the rep introduced me to some bendix brake lube that does work well.

Thanks. Always great to see a detailed video of this. I have rudimentary tools, but enough to do a proper job. An old torque bar, which is why the wheel needs to be turned so it can fit . By the way , 129 ft-lbs is not so easily done! It was a little concerning as the previous Brake job, done by a place starting with "P", had the Caliper plate bolts at 60 ft-lbs! I looked at a few different videos to get a good sense of what to do and look for. You cover the bases so thanks again.

Leaving the turkey baster with brake fluid adds flavor. Also mazda uses a very similar design on most their cars, I think it's the same since the oem parts have fomoco in the Ford script cast in them. Great design for here in ny.

Thanks for the help doing my wife's brakes on her 2014 escape. Well you know what I mean, this video took the mystery out of them and I had the right size Alan socket to take the calipers off. I also picked up the took to clean around the wheel lugs...HUGE help. I also got the hook to hang the caliper which is much safer than balancing it. Keep up the good work.

A good idea to step on the brake pedal a few times after putting everything back together to push out the pads. And also good to take the vehicle for a short drive and make a few stops at varing speeds to bead in the pads and check for proper operation and noise.

@throttlebottle5906 7 лет назад
surely he does that, but good advice to folks watching and doing it themselves, don't need any accidents. I nearly always do that, except for folks that were "race car drivers" or "mechanics" for years, they like to break in their own brakes :)

LOL yes I do. I bought a cheaper set since I will only be using it on the Escape and my sons Fusion. I would still love to see how it is done. Even if on a similar vehicle. Seeing it done helps so much towards the little things one might run into. Hey thanks Eric.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 7 лет назад
the biggest thing, make sure you rotate the "piston/tool" around some once it bottoms out to free up the internals and align the piston 180 degree from the brake pad width, ( the "pin" on back of brake pad needs to seat into the caliper notch. I've had them hang up and rotate on initial brake apply (slack take-up) so always check that before placing wheels on, use a mirror if needed :|

I like to open the bleeder screw when compressing the piston. It prevents fluid reentering the master cylinder, it gets a lot easier to compress, and more importantly it prevents the possibility of triggering an ABS code.

Just did a brake job on a 2012 Town and Country yesterday. Rear pin was frozen causing a spongy feel to the pedal. Rotors were stuck brought out my snap-on air hammer and couldn't get the rotor to break free (weak sauce), brought out the IR (Ingersoll Rand) and took only two squeeze of the trigger to break the rotor free. Heated the bracket with the frozen pin and got the pin moving, only casualty was the rubber boot, which I had to cut before applying the torch to the bracket. Don't really like breathing burning rubber. Great video!
