Just ordered my torque convertor which is making a heck of a rattle - sounds like a lifter or rod that went bad, but it's clearly the TC. Thanks for this video Nathan, it will save me a ton of money. I've replaced clutches, so it's very much like that.
HI I have a question. Followed your video with 100% success. Now the bad thing is the torque converter is out. Got used tranny and is doing same thing as ur video. Did u have any issues after changing it?
The Drive shaft bolts are 12 point 12mm bolts. I think I said...5 or 6mm, why I said that...I was getting tired I guess. This was a tough Job for one guy ;(
Finally started pulling mine today. It's a beast when you do it on your own. However, I'll be doing my first transmission rebuild on my 03-5.4L . It's amazing when you realize how much money you start to save when you do your own work. Thanks for the handy tips.
I’m doing a rebuild and reman torque converter for $552.25 (everything except hard part well that’s with the sprags) for a friend and I’m throwing in the labor for free. I want to thank u for this video. I hate taking off exhaust because everything heats and cools so much it makes the bolts and nuts brittle or locked into place. It was the one thing that I was actually concerned about doing. I’ve rebuilt a 42rle before and the one that’s in this is a 4r100 aka e4od I believe they call it. I just want to let u know ur knowledge is being paid forward. This is a great instructional video! Sorry u had to do this urself it is horrible to one man it! So thank u a million times over!
When i got to the torque converter bolts, I found out that a 14mm socket works better than the 9/16, the 9/16 was a little loose around the bolt which is probably why yours stripped. Just thought I'd let you and whoever else know before another torque converter bolt has to be grinded off. Your video helped me out alot, this is my first transmission drop and your video is the only one I could find that actually helped me out. Thank you sir.
Solid Video Sir, THANKS!...... But on the heatshield, I disagree. Remove side mount on the inside then just bend the shield down till you have access to the 13mm top bolt from inside, (ratcheting wrench only, no room for a socket with solid fuel lines right above) no need to remove wheel well splash guard (tranny dipstick mount bolt still accessible with guard mounted, just pull up rubber flap). Also, if you have the 4R100 (and you likely do if you have the 5.4, but the 4.6 never came with them)...YOU MUST REMOVE EXHAUST!!!!! Trust me. its a bigger longer tranny and you'll have no way to pull the transfer case out with crossover pipe in the way. Good luck everyone!
Awesome video! I think Im having problems with the Torque Converter in my 1999 Expedition 5.4/4R100/4x4. What symptoms were you experiencing with your Expedition that led you to your TC diagnosis? Thank you
Thanks . I'm replacing the driver side catalytic converter assembly which includes everything from the exhaust manifold to the clamp where the left side ties into the right side , so that cross member has to come off .
Thanks for the video .and 1 quick question: I got a 2001 ford expedition 4.6 ,not a 4 wheel drive , can i swap the transmission to a 2001 Ford expedition 5.4
What symptoms did you have? I have an old 99 f150 that started lurching and stalling every time you put it in gear. Wont run in gear at all. Ive since bought a 97 7.3l f350, so its not my daily driver, but it's time to fix it up and sell it. I'm suspecting the torque converter too..
The same thing you described!! Yep I tried everything brainwashing my self thinking is was NOT the the torque converter...But it was. After I replaced it....it ran like new again.
does this apply for 2006 Ford F150 trucks same motor size 4.6L, how would you diagnose the if the transmission is bad... i am planning on doing this on donar truck to have some experience on removal and replacing.. what to check, i don't plan on repairing the transmission, i might bring it into a shop to do the work.
oh i think i should be ok, slow and steady i got all week to have the transmission out and the other one will be arriving on Friday, but i will be doing some checks while i have it out
I'm about to take my expedition In next week because it shut off at a stop sign. No check engine lights ever. Shifting into a high gear it jumps. Giving good gas it will screech loudly after jumping. It lets out a loud clank underneath when I let off the gas. This all after I took it to padilla autos in monterey california n told them to check everything. Got it back with bad transmission problems.
@@FixingWithPassion Thank you for answering. Can I ask this follow up, would you be able to tell me what to look out for on my vehicle's flex plate in terms of signs of wear, or what to look for that tells you it's still in good shape? Thanks again for your time.
I did mine in 4 hours by my self if started with drive shaft then wires and linkages then transmission mount and muffler .. .ooops 🙀 nah but had no problems also I just removed part and placed bolts back in the same holes .... work smarter not harder and dont have to buy paint
I have a Expedtion 2005 it start up but does accelerate do you know what the problem may be before it stop driving I was having problems with the gear getting stuck
The torque converter could be broken OR you leaked out all of your transmission fluid, I would check the transmission fluid and if its empty then get the right kind of fluid for it and fill it up. But if it has a leak then you may need to replace the transmission gasket. I'm not a mechanic though.
I've got a 98 f150 4x4 4r70w trans, issue is it works fine in reverse, but when in drive it won't move unless i rev motor high, after moving it has all gears till I come to a stop, I have no code so I'm not sure if it's a bad torque converter or bad pump, any ideas
Hard to say until you look inside. Sounds like a piston seal perhaps...or front clutch pack it almost gone. Wish I could tell you but I'd be guessing. But if you can take it apart you could actually fix it. I never though I'd be ripping trannys apart and fixing them.
Hey I got the same truck I been running in to a problem with my truck at times when it was still driving I push on the gas an the truck would rev high rpm for a lil then it would go in gear an drive then one day it just stopped going in in gear beside reverse
I'm gonna say no. The 4.6 will probably have a 4f60r transmission and the 5.4 is probably gonna have a 4f70r. If you have access to both vin#s, call and have a Ford dealer double check, that will tell you exactly what it has
how in the hell did you get that transfer case out like that i fighted for hours i ended up taking the drivers side exhaust/cat off, ended up having to torch one of the manifold studs but soon as i got exhaust out the transfer came right out
I used a tranny jack to lower the transfercase, tilted it and lowered it...The exhaust, well there was enough room or me to work around...except that dam'ed head shield on the passangers side...one bolt.....30mins! ugh....after all that I had room to work with.
see thats prob why then i left my heat shields on next thing to do i one passenger side top bolt and trans will be ready to drop out mine a 99 eb with 174 thousand on it trans started slipping bad
That bold in on top of the frame...(were the heat sheild is) I had to use a small 1/2 wrench...and painfully s- l -o -w- l- y take it out with hardly any room....just small turns at a time through the pasangers side wheel well. After you get it out of the way then you can access the side tranny bolts much easier....FYI
TVWXMAN32 could I drive my truck with out the front driveshaft? just about to finish my transmission install,,Thanks to your videos it made it much easier!
hi I have a 2001 Ford Expedition XLT I bought it at auction it turns on when I put it on Drive and it feels like it's stuck on gear it doesn't want to go eventually it takes off any rides perfectly but whenever I coming to a stop it happens again I try to take off and doesn't want to go it feels like it's on a low Geer does anybody have a suggestion it's not the catalytic converter because it don't let out that egg smell so I know it's not that if somebody know can they please help me
You really don't have to mark the drive shaft it will work any way it won't viberate if it's not put back in in the same exact spot if that was the case they would make it where it only go's in one way . that's a myth.
The purpose of showing someone how to remove the tranny is to show what you're doing step by step not pausing the video and then remove the bolts and then talk abt how you did it. You need to show what you did and how you did it. Not a good video to learn from! 👎
Turn to Jesus people he died for your sins. Repent of what the New testament describes as sin. Believe the gospel get baptized and obey the teachings of Jesus. The gospel and the teachings of Jesus are documented in Matthew Mark Luke and John. Jesus is the only way to be saved God bless you all. If you have faith in Jesus through your faith you will live life with him as your example.
i know how to pull bolts! I thought this was about HOW TO REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION. It's about pulling wheels and driveshaft and transfer case and everything else BESIDES pulling the transmission. . HOW DO I DISCONNECT THE SHIFT ASSEMBLY AND THE ELECTRICAL PLUGS WITHOUT DAMAGING THEM?!?!?! THAT IS WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW! As a hint. REMOVE THE EXHAUST. REMOVE THE HEAT SHIELDS. YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM TO GET TO EVERYTHING IF YOU DO THOSE THINGS! Sorry to be grumpy, but I am tired of watching 30 minute videos that never answer the question I need answered. If you want to remove the transfer case, show that in a separate video. Pulling the exhaust? show that in another video. Strip everything out, THEN START WITH THE REMOVAL of the transmission. That is what this video is supposed to be about, and it is about everything BUT that.
