I had a 2002 Exploder as my first car from 2013 to 2018. 4 road trips down the east coast, 3 girlfriends, 2 Radiators, a transmission and an immeasurable amount of skipped classes in Big Blue Bertha. She wasn’t perfect, but I loved her 😢❤️.

My parents bought a black 2002 Explorer back in 2004 when I was 1 year old, and now I'm driving her 19 years and 172,000 miles later as my daily. Granted, her suspension is shot and she has a few coolant leaks for the A/C, but I love her still. She was the first car I ever drove in my grandparents field when I was 9. I have a lot of memories with her. She's still running strong.

I’m so glad we have had similar experiences with our Explorers. Mine has a massive centimental meaning to me. I absolutely love it. I’ve replaced the transmission twice, the A/C currently doesn’t work due to a refrigerant leak, but I’m in the middle of replacing the seals. The 4.6L V8 in it sounds absolutely amazing, and runs forever. I’m slowly but surely approaching 200k on it.

Yo guys my first car was 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer😂 what’s funny actuallt ima tell you guys a small story my parents owned literally the same exact car 02 Explorer we called it the hulk becauee as we were kids it was big and green to us. So me and my younger brother loved it so much that i told my self I was gonna buy one and now i did 16 year old driving a 02 v8 has terrible gas milage but the only thing that was wrong with it was the intake manifold put a performance mustang in it and boom 116 k miles and i fixed every thing that could possibly go wrong so this thing is now bullet proof and i want to keep it for as long as possible because my dream was to keep my first car for a hella long time

I own an 99 XLT with the 5.0. My late dad was a mechanic and owned it and even put a custom pin stripe on the side himself. For awhile back in 2008, it was all we had. It got us to school, to the grocery store, and both of my parents to work. Every time I press the gas I feel a bit of him there with me. Now with 250,000 miles I'm picking up the torch, and busting out the tools he left for me, to bring her back to her former glory.

Decent size without being obnoxious, has over 150k miles and many more will be added. 1. No mention of the Explorer trim level, Explorer was originally a trim level on the F series 2. the 1st gen Explorer had a 4.0L Cologne Over Head VALVE (aka pushrod) V6 not Overhead Cam, the SOHC 4.0L Cologne was introduced in the 2nd gen Explorer 3. The Rollover clip at 7:54 is a 97-98 Expedition, not an Explorer 4. The 5th gen Explorer was released in 2011, and the only engines available were the 3.5L Duratec35 (NA engine) and the 2.0L Ecoboost I4. The 3.7L Duratec37 (NA Cyclone V6) & 3.5L EcoBoost (Twin Turbo V6) were added in 2013. 5. What about the Explorer Sport Trac and the Adrenalin? You guyz are slippin' man

What you really need to know: Ford knew that the A-pillars on many of the Explorers weren't strong enough, but decided that it was cheaper to pay off the eventual claims rather than issue a recall. They didn't tell their customers about this though, and instead let people die. One of those people was my mom.
@revolver265
@revolver265 5 лет назад
This really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. Ford tended to do this sort of dumb shit - profits before people, and I hate them on a personal level and I resent every time I get into a Ford vehicle. They're liars. --------- For anyone who didn't know, on unsafe vehicles, Ford would calculate how much the R&D would be and the cost of any fixes, and weighed it against how much court settlements would cost. If it cost less to fix it than the estimated court costs, they fixed the problem. If it cost more to fix it on every car, the long and short of it was they let people die in their motor vehicles. I can't believe the executives at Ford continued to do this, even after the book _Unsafe At Any Speed_ was written, documenting how an $11 fix to the Ford Pinto's notoriously explosive fuel tank was knowingly overlooked, effectively allowing people to die even in slow-speed accidents because execs had calculated that the lawsuits and settlements would cost less than the fixes.

I remember my dad bought the 2nd Gen Explorer in fall of 1995. He ordered it new from the factory. I remember him picking his customizations in the buyers catalog thing from Ford. Got to choose his exterior/interior colors, types, styles, etc.. I was 12 years old and it was the coolest feeling in the world. I remember I kept asking "is it ready yet?" I think it took about 3 months until finally right around just before Christmas week he got the call from our local Ford dealer that his Explorer arrived. It was Forrest Green with tan interior, absolutely gorgeous. I remember one of the interior features was the built in digital compass and I thought that was the coolest thing. That was a great time!

I love mine. Regardless of what engine you have, unless the transmission has been replaced already, plan on it, especially the V6 with the 5 speed transmission. If it's a 4wd one, check and see if the transfer case and rear differential have been replaced, because they are expensive to fix and go out a lot. Mine were replaced by the previous owner. But overall, like I said, I love mine, so I would highly recommend it.

My first car was a 1998 stick shift Explorer 2 Door with the 4.0 in red. It was low revving, clunky, 299,998 miles when I bought it (Clocked over on the test drive with my parents outside the guy's home) and it lasted me all the way to 340,000 before I got it towed out yesterday to the scrapyard. I jumped it over a bridge (banged gears up to 45 on a dirt road up to a bridge down a hill) and got maybe 2-3 seconds air time. It drove still, so I ran it off the road not paying attention one early morning for school, but it was rolling up into brush on a hill, so I just pulled it in neutral and it fell back out. I drove it through my woods, through my creek, got it stuck in my yard after it poured the day after my birthday that year, and had it in a rut that had the mud up to my bumper. I slammed it into a curb on a diamond interchange during a flash blizzard, knocked it out of alignment that I never fixed, but did all but the actual alignment to fix it up. I learned everything I needed to about maintenance, and general wrenching on it. I changed my own oil for the first time with one of my best friends and we got it on these narrow ramps made for tractors onto trailers, but held up with stacked bricks. Finally, after three years of great service, I bought a Buick lesabre. But it was shit, and I went back to the Explorer after just three months. After another 3 months, I bought a newer used car from a dealership, a nice 2014 Mustang 3.7, and traded in that buick. The Explorer still served us well as my dad drove it safely and cautiously, but unfortunately the idler got dirty, vacuum lines failed, and you couldn't drive it without holding three pedals down. It got in an accident when a new kia hit me in the rear after failing to stop at a signal, but only lost a tire and got a nasty dent. A month ago, the starter failed, and we decided we didn't want to mess around with it, and got a newer Ford Focus to replace her. just had it towed away, with all my memories in it from the best years of my life so far. I loved it, and would give my mustang for a clean, low mileage identical one.

I have a 2002 ford explorer bought brand new on 10/31/01, with normal repair problems, 4 sets of brakes, 16 replacement tires, 6 wheel bearing hubs, 3 alternators, 4 batteries, a heat blend door problem, a main door switch replaced, all the struts replaced twice, a broke rear tail pipe, replaced, upper ball joints, replaced fuel pump once, replaced, leaky thermostat housing and most expensive on my 3rd transmission. However, have never had any engine problems, never used or burned a quart of oil between changes, no radiator leaks or problems, no rear or front axle problems, no driveshaft front or rear problems or u- joint problems, no transfer case problems, never a problems with fuel injectors or fuel rails, original starter, all gauges work and are accurate, power steering pump original and last to say original spark plug wires and the vehicle has 326,000 on the odometer and still driven daily. I am retired from Ford Motor and now work for the Detroit Tigers as a n usher drive 64 miles round trip to Comerica Park for the last 14 years at least to 60+ games. I think this Ford Explorer has done me well and i got my $29,000 out of it and more.

I myself own a 1997 ford explorer sport 2 Door. Father owns a 2002 ford explorer sport Trac. 4.0L V6 in the 1997. Same engine but with a turbo In the 2002. My baby survived so many different types of abuse over the years including the engine running without coolant for half an hour (at least) in the winter when the antifreeze valve blew. (Battery died, got it boosted, left it running when my father (when he owned her) went in to do about 1 hour of paperwork. Came out to a smoking engine.) Engine survived with minimal damage (as what can be expected) and is still running strong today on the same engine. I love her so much. She ain't much, she's got her flaws, but she's mine. I have a 07 mercury mountaineer as my second car, I loved driving it because it was comfortable and extremely roomy with decent visibility compared to my impala. HOWEVER besides the pathetic 4L v6 it has another tiny issue, THAT MOUNTAINEER ALWAYS WANTS TO FLIP!!! I have an off ramp I take to go to work, and I’ve almost flipped it 6 times just on that low speed turn! The closest I ever got to legitimate massive rollover was in the winter on some icey road in Ohio, it lost all traction and I rescued it from hitting a pole but the sliding left and hitting grass made the mountaineer jump up on two wheels and it tried to flip fully but I got it into a slanted ditch and caught it right before massive rollover. I believe all the sway bars are broken on it too so when I hit those annoying bumps on the highway the momentum makes it lean and bounce with the weight all on one side. The old explorer/mountaineer platform is so unbelievably dangerous I can’t believe how long it was manufactured! They put a very high center of gravity on a very heavy vehicle and then gave it a really small wheelbase, that’s criminal levels of engineering stupidity.....

Great video as always, Mr. Donut. Interesting story on the history of the Explorer. However, I would like to point out that you glossed over a couple significant changes: The fifth-gen switched to a shitty transverse engine layout with FWD bias that included a couple major design flaws. 1. The water pump was mounted behind the timing cover and was driven by the timing chain. This made the water pump replacement much more difficult and costly, but also could result in internal rotating assembly damage in the event of a water pump failure, since coolant would leak into the crank case rather than externally. And 2., the PTU which replaced a traditional transfer case could not be easily serviced, and was recommended by Ford to NOT need servicing (fluid change) was located very close to the cat, resulting in cooking of the fluid into a tar-like sludge, and resulted in many costly failures of the PTU. The 2020 6th gen saw a return to longitudinally-mounted, traditional powertrain layout with a RWD bias. I imagine the shitty water pump design is retained, but I dont know.

I got pined between the seat and door while we was rolling. it broke my leg, gave me a concussion, fracture my hip and collar bone. my father was ejected from his seat landing on his head. this gave him brain damage and crush parts of his spine. my father was never the same after the accident and it took his life 10 years later.
