My husband loves your review but he wants to say that this truck is perfect for him. He's an electrician and loves that it comes with a generator feature and all the other features he can use on different job sites. It has great torque for towing to sites around town he says he won't need to tow further than 50 miles. It has a good load capacity he says he can carry all his tools in that awesome frunk.

I always find it amusing when people are upset when someone buys a light-duty pickup truck and doesn't do "Truck Things". They don't have anything to say when someone buys a 700hp Shelby Mustang and never takes it to the track. When someone buys a fullsize SUV like the new Cadillac Escalade V with 600 plus horsepower to drop off the kids at school. Lol People will buy what they like and what they can afford and the automakers know that. The Lightening is just another option for F150 customers to choose from and the reality is Ford can't build enough of them to satisfy demand.

When they rate Ford as a company, they use it as a whole company and this is why is lower. There is a reason why f150 is the most sold truck because it os reliable and fun to drive.

Form a driving expense I derived this from the video. 60-90% charge on a DC charger was $21. Standard range 370km x 30% = 111kms. F150 Hybrid 3.5 ecoboost rated at 9.8L/100km combined. Therefore 9.8 x 1.11 = 10.9L - regular gas in Alberta is around $1.25/L or less, $1.25x10.9L = $13.63. That is 37% less $ per KM with the hybrid. And... no towing limitations, no range limitation, you can run your tools, run your house. Hybrids are by far the better solution for a working truck at this time in my opinion.
@MrDomestosWC

Correct, that’s assuming your ford has a relatively good kWh usage during winter months and trust me as an EV owner I’ll tell you that kWh usage below -20 is outrageous. Charging at home would be cheaper but you won’t be able to charge to 100% overnight and nevertheless EV trucks are a total nonsense. I own a Tesla and ram 1500 and each one of those have their own purpose and place on the market. Check hummer EV it costs twice as much to drive than it’s ICE cousin.
@kirklins8411
@kirklins8411 Год назад
I think the big advantage would be if you can charge at home. At 12 cents/kw and a 98kw battery that would only be $11.76 to charge the whole battery to full.

I've owned a 2017 F-150 Supercrew for about 3 years now. XLT, 4×4 and base (non-turbo) V-6. That engine even has more HP and TQ than a V-8 truck back when I was a young man in the '90's. I'm happy with it, but would like one of these if I could afford it. Living and working in the city, most of my driving is supposed and go, so extended range EV a charge would last me a couple of weeks. For a homeowner like myself that only occasionally uses the truck for dump or Home Depot runs this would be fine. That almost $100K pricetag is just too much. Great review folks, thanks!

I've driven an F150 for years and love it. I tow on rare occasions but for the most part it's my daily driver from work and back. I have hobbies that I use the truck for on a regular basis and would be lost without my truck bed. The lightning would suit my needs just fine. All the benefits of a gas light duty full size pick up without the massive cost of filling the gas tank. If the lightning was the same price as a gas powered F150. The lightning would be my choice.

Its crazy everyone gets so caught up on towing long distances. Only a small portion of towing is long distances. A lot of people tow local and the Lightning tows great. If you need to simply tow your boat to the Lake or a contractor around town the Lightning tows better than any gas/diesel truck. Everyone gets upset over the one use case it does not work, but Ford sell 900,000 f150s a year with various uses. The f150 Lightning knocks it out of the park for most uses. I own one and its a fantastic vehicle.

A practical plug-in hybrid should have been Ford's priority with decent cold weather and towing range. 40 to 60kms of battery range for short commutes and daily activities with a 4 cylinder ICE to tow and when the mercury dips.

Today my buddy drove me from New york to Syracuse. On the way we stopped near the end of NJ at the Penn state border. There was a row of people yawning in their teslas with umbilical cords to their creepy chargers. As we sat down and pulled away, I said No thanks, this joke's on you. The range is great but we had to get somewhere by a certain time and the snow was falling hard. The last thing I need is a battery charging time upwards of 40 minutes, alarms going off because we're using too much heat and it's cold outside, and then hunting to go to a charging station where 50% of the plugs don't work.

I was fortunate enough to be an early reservation holder and got the first Lightning (Lariat ER) in Western NY early June 2022. I have 18,600 miles already (trouble free) and love the utility and versatility. I'll only towed 5k or less locally and towing performance is great but obviously as with all EV, aerodynamics is the deciding factor on how far you go. Pricing is high but I was in early when an every option Lariat ER was under $80k. One key feature vs a traditional half ton is the independent rear suspension. The ride is more full size body on frame SUV than pick up. Great road tripper as 270 miles at 70 mpg is doable and 320 around town. Charging curve is solid and will hold 170 kw for 10-15 mins and is always in triple figures until 80%. Overall, my far the most impressive vehicle I've owned and we've owned 40+ in our family since the mid 1980s. P. S. Max towing is 10,000 lbs with the Max Tow pkg

Yeah I was going to bring up something similar. There was a study down on how often truck owners tow or use the bed, and the vast majority didn't. They liked the fact that they had the ability too, but very rarely did. The Lightning will serve these people perfectly and if you are in the minority, you are already looking at something more capable than an F150

Trucks are not just for hauling long range. Granted, you don't want it if hauling long range until they have longer range batteries and more pull through charging locations. But there are tons of truck things this truck can do, and Ford did a nice job with it. A list of "truck things" I've done with a pickup truck in the last couple of years that didn't include any long range towing: towing a dump trailer in town, towing a pull behind auger in town, hauling large gravel, hauling pea gravel, hauling mulch, hauling scrap concrete to the dump, hauling generic garbage to the dump, hauling rentable equipment like compacters, hauling concrete sacks, hauling construction supplies from home improvement stores, moving furniture. That is a ton of stuff, most of which could not have been done without a pickup truck.

I think the hybrid version is the best powertrain for the people who go on longer trips or tow loads any distance. It can save gas innthe city and that mobile power pack may be appealing. For the full ev. People who have their cottage/cabin fairly close to home. It should be able to do most daily driver duties with out a trailer no problem. If it had a stripped down work truck model it could be a good companion to a gas model on work sites. Work sites that don't require long hauls.

My partner and I have a 2022 Mach-E (and a 2023 Kona EV) and love it. However, we will definitely be investing in a Ford Lightning this year as we live in rural Canada and need to regularly power through lots of snow and ice and generally rough terrain - as well as move/haul heavy items that simply won't fit in a car or SUV. This is pretty typical with rural living (we currently use a Dodge Ram for this kind of stuff). Ford Lighting is perfectly suited to a rural lifestyle so I believe that's the main market.

I think this truck will appeal to a small segment of the population. Those who are: 1. tech nerds 2. have a household income of at least $300K 3. have a husband that spends a good deal of time doing projects around the house and is therefore in the big box stores very often 4. doesn't tow very often and when they do, again, it's power equipment from a big box store, less than 20 miles from their house I personally don't think there are enough people such as this, which is why this will always be a niche truck. Now since Ford produces so many other cars, this isn't an issue. There are companies like Rivian and Lucid, however, who are having major issues with sales. Simply put, not enough people are buying their incredibly expensive cars.

Lightening's on fire at Dearborn Assembly did create a "Stop Build" order until the battery issues can be investigated. Also in Oregon one of these was "bricked" at a charger and they have no idea what happened after taking it to a dealership. As a Ford owner for the last 5 vehicles Im exhausted with all the recalls on my 2021 Explorer ST, its at 5 now and counting. Ford's SYNC3 and SYNC4 is the most poorly executed automotive software available, their mobile App FordPass barely works 60% of the time. Time to look elsewhere for quality at these prices.

I believe Ford did their research and found most commercial buyers want reliable, versatile, low maintenance vehicles which travel less than 100 miles per day. They can easily be charged overnight. People who tow large heavy trailers long distances will have to look elsewhere until compact efficient range extending technologies advance.

You’re right about first-gen automotive tech being OK from Toyota. I had a 1998 GS 400, which was loaded with brand new tech. After 8 years the only thing that malfunctioned was the seal on the gas cap, which cost $10.

@@genericreference6969 Thanks for the warning; I hadn't heard about that. Ironically the issue sounds like it is old technology, but scary nonetheless. Technically speaking, Toyota has shipped a variety of EV's in the past, including PHEVs and at least one BEV from over a decade ago.

Contractor towing, in town where it all happens, cannot do better, the towing issue is only high speed highway with large high and wide trailers with lots of drag, such as a RV not a good choice.

Im a plumbing contractor, few things to consider such as with an incorporated business I can only write off $35k of a work vehicle unless its full electric then I can write off 100%. Also Im seeing these lightnings for sale for $69000 CAD, and you get a $9000 givernment incentive. So now were looking at $60,000 truck I can write off 100% of the cost of. 300km a day range with apparently the payload not having a detrimental affect on the range, unlike towing. Few reasons Im considering a lightning over another diesel.

BEVs make the most sense as smaller, more efficient vehicles. IMO there should be a "mineral guzzler tax" over 85 kwh that discourages manufacturers from building massive vehicles that demand equally massive batteries. Hybrid and maybe PHEV makes the most sense for pickups.

Thanks, Andrea & Zack. Interesting that you mentioned the hybrid. Andre, TFL Truck’s main man for Roman recently sold his F150 hybrid. Personal vehicle and he absolutely loved it. A great compromise as he tows a boat regularly fairly long distance for recreation with his family. Onboard powerbed capability another plus. I think he even charged a friend’s Model 3 while at the lake where they go if I recall. I always wonder how many of the full sized pickups sold annually are used for serious work/towing/hauling 🤷🏻‍♂️

Towing range is mostly determined by the aerodynamics of the trailer, not so much the weight. Edmunds did a towing test with a 7,000 lb trailer and got 170 miles. In my case I tow 7,000-8000 lbs 25-30 times a year (at harvest time), but I only go around 40 miles (and back empty), so I could charge it over night and it would work perfectly (and cost a LOT less than gas). Now if they could just reduce the eye watering purchase price....

I do agree that people are overly harsh on one manufacturers over the other. Tesla do have a pretty good list of combustion but somehow it has never caused a big enough splash to investigate why (or perhaps all investigation points to a one off occurrence?) Hyundai and Kia is deserved though since iihs wrote a study and it confirmed that on average Kia and Hyundai car are significantly more likely to gets fire claim from 2011-2016 and it increases with time,

This is what Ford did: They build an all-electric truck to show the others(Chevy & Ram & Rivian) that they could. It doesn't matter that it can't work like a gas truck because it is not designed to do that. And Ford knew it all along. This is not a surprise to them.

I had a reservation for over a year. However, when the promise of a relatively reasonably priced electric truck was devoured by Ford’s greedy bait and switch tactics, I bailed. We bought a BMW X5 45e PHEV for much less than the truck would have cost. I’ll keep driving my old truck for a few more years until competition can temper some of the greed in the truck market.
