How to determine the cause of a lean condition on a Ford 5.4 engine.
How to locate a vacuum leak without a smoke machine.
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.

I got the same two codes popping up on my 98 f150. What ended up being the issue? Mass air flow sensor? Throttle position sensor?

It appears to have a new injector, and you have to lift the fuel rail to replace even one, so the leak could be multiple broken injector seal contacts from lifting the fuel rail. Even a very small piece of particulate matter introduced during the movement of dirty parts can prevent an injector o-ring from sealing. I prefer to use Berryman's Carb and Choke Cleaner with a capillary tube for pinpoint checking but there are those who are afraid of a potential fire, so it is a matter of preference.
@everyhome9936
@everyhome9936 11 месяцев назад
EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw that new injector. Not very precise to slosh water / liquid all over the top of the engine....is it multiple injectors not seated or bad seals.....or is it really an intake gasket bad in multiple areas. Would be easier to pinpoint with a shot of carb cleaner through the tube

So I'm having the same issues with my 02 4.2L except I just had the intake gaskets replaced upper and lower. I hooked up my scanner and was looking at the live data. My readings were stft -0.7 to 8.2 for both banks my ltft for bank 1 was 17.2 and for bank 2 was 24.5 engine was fully warmed up. Can someone give me some info on these readings? After the intake gaskets were replaced I cleared the codes and they didn't appear for awhile until I was out running errands and shut my truck off and started it back up to hear a gurgling noise coming from the fuel tank. Soon after that noise occurred I got codes p0171 and p0174. I notice that noise only happens when the truck is already warm/hot. It doesn't happen on cold starts.

The rubber stopper where the MAF sensor wires go into the intake tube can come loose and trick a guy. I was at wits end knowing there was a vac leak and not being able to find it. The rubber stopper dangling there underneath the air filter tube lets air in past the MAF sensor and will throw P0171 & P0174 codes. Cleaned the parts & connections all up and short fuel trims finally swung negative settling the long terms to about 3.7 each over a drive cycle. Ref...2001 F150 5.4L

Hello paul, not sure if u would be comfortable anwsering this question, if not np, but how much do u charge for the diagnostic u did on f-150
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
$70 for me to just show up at a garage and this includes up to 1 hour of diag time. If it takes me 5 minutes, it's still $70, if it takes me 60 minutes, it's still $70. Then we go from there. 98% of cars I look at, this first hour charge is enough, but sometimes you get those oddball ones with multiple problems and things change.
@chrisvill54
@chrisvill54 Год назад
I must be doing something wrong because I can never find vacuum leaks with water. Does the vacuum leak have to be past the throttle body? Because I pulled a hose before the throttle body to create a leak, to see if spraying water around it would make a difference and it did not.

Like the way you diagnose! It’s nice to see and here what I should be looking for in the live readings from my obd2 app. I’ve been curious of what the numbers should look like for everything. If you don’t have a video on just that it would be a good and helpful video to make for us! Just going through all the standard live readings in a basic obd2 app. Like the one I use which is called Car Doctor with a wifi obd2 connection. It’s cheap and a great way to keep tabs on how my vehicles are running or being able to view my codes if they are thrown, and clear them when needed. You got a new sub out of me today! Take care.

I just released a step by step video on replacing the intake manifold gaskets on my C4 Corvette LT1. Sometimes people don't realize it's not just oil leaking out but ALSO causing a vacuum leak, causing a poor running engine. I like how you used water to check for the vacuum leak instead of carb cleaner which can be dangerous. Thanks for another cool vid Paul and welcome back home to all the ice and snow - Glen

Great job just as usual. You got an awesome understanding of how STFT and LTFT are calculated in relation to an engine performance condition. I really impressed by your approach. Man, you are an expert. By the way, can a mechanic be paid for troubleshooting an engine performance issue? If they can be paid for that, how can I know how much to charge a customer for performing such a task? I have used alldata to charge for labor but not to charge for diagnostics or troubleshooting. Thank you and God bless you.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
Hey, it's you again :-) Absolutely! Keep watching my friend. I will teach you how to charge for diagnostic time. For me it is a minimum 1 hour okay from the customer. Making them aware this first hour is a flat fee. Meaning if it takes me 5 minutes or 60 minutes, it is the same charge.

I've seen those STF1 and such mentioned on forums Do you know if these scanner apps can load say... a particular vehicle factory profile to which compare your vehicle's current performance and from there telling you what's out of place? Good video...though my boss doesn't like the water test lol had a jaguar that had a vacuum leak, our smoke machine was broken so I did a water test. He states that you can hydro lock an engine by doing that. I tend to think with a small vacuum leak issue, that's not gonna happen. Also, on hondas with idle problems. First step, check coolant level, if that's okay, go directly to iac. 99% of the time, that's the issue.

Hey Paul I was talking with some others here in my town in az. We were thinking why don't you make a video that goes more into how you desire whitch way your going and how you come to the conclusion to test the components. It would give more insight to why you chose the right and what brought you to that discussion. Also on your book why you don't put a practice test in it like your classroom test. Then it would help us to know where we are week at and what to study a little harder on. And kind of a test yourself kind of quiz. Thanks for everything its really made a big change on how I now look at things. Its brought way more to my table. Thank you keep it coming. Transmission seems to be a big testing problem for us now. What's up with that ratchet Pete had. The damn thing looked to be three feet long. Is he working on a locomotive engine. Wow!!! Really liked the AC/DC "For those about to Rock," music in the background. Angus and the boys are the best.

What technician does not have a huge ratchet? You should see some of the 3/4dr ratchets that are available....love them. You might have to sell some bodily fluids just to afford one, but oh well, lol.

i don't think its a good idear squirting all that water into your intake manifold u even got a refill. it will do no good but mix your gasoline with all that wotah ending up in your engine block. you were right at one point "you see how rough the engine sounds? the engine is pulling in water now" and why would you want that. shouldn't you be spraying it with carburetor cleaner instead so you'd quickly know if there's a leak cuz you'll hear the engine racing as your spark plugs burn the carburetor cleaner sucked in the manifold gasket leak? am i wrong? i'm not even a mechanic, i just saw one of Mr. Scotty Kilmer's videos and put it together. may i suggest you take down this video to save your other good ones. peace.

Brazzch Guy I was thinking the same...you could also get ice build up around the throttle cable which could be dangerous...there are baffles with sweep holes in the intake tube/elbow on a lot of cars ...I always use starting fluid spray which immediately cause the rpm to jump when you hit the leak...I know I know...that is also a no no...but itbworks and ive never had anything come of it

Is there a scanner that is less price that you would recommend for new techs that can perform close to what this can ?

Hey tanner scanner I have a 96 ford f 150. when it's cold it will start but father it gets warm if you shut it off or come to a idle it will die or not run. check faults it has one for p1351. but once it cools it starts right back up

When it doesn't start, you need to find out what your are missing. Spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse. Report findings and maybe I can help. It's not about guessing on this channel. Also what is the definition of the P1351 code? Thanks
