I special ordered my 2000 F350 with a 6 sp manual and 7.3 PS in 2000 for $26K. Its a 4X4 XLT not Lariat and I had 5" straight exhaust, chipped and a Garret Power Master turbo and cold air swapped. Love the truck and with the 6 SP trans I easy get 20+ mpg, but usually pulling trailers.
Charlie, would love to see more old cars tested, see if the other staff at daily motor are willing to donate their cars. I knew someone 20 years ago that had the 99 f series with the v10, and said he averaged 9mpg. So under this test that would get about 13mpg highway.
MPH is everything in these trucks for MPG. I never run faster than the line between 65 and 70 in my 2003 7.3 and I always get 17.5MPG in my F350. I commute 250 miles around DC on I95 each week and always refill around 16-17 gallons in a 40 gallon tank.
I have a 2003 7.3 f250 xlt, I did some mpg testing and found that if you keep the tac at or below 1800 rpm, I get 19 mpg but if I go 70 mph it drops to 16mpg. and found out that on the oil dipstick keep it about 3/16" to 1/4" below the full mark it gets 20mpg, I wish I had bought the lariat with the mpg gauge!
Really appreciate this vid. In the market for a work truck and will drive quite a bit for the job. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I hope there’s more vids like this out there!
I found a nice 99 F 250 7.3 4x4 super cab short bed last November. l drive rural, no city and no highway, I consistently get 17 mpg on the button. I am easy on the gas pedal 75% of the time, cruise in the 60 mph zone. The occasional stomp on the gas just because it is damn fun to hear that roar bellowing out of the 4 inch exhaust. Hope you find a nice one 👍
Add some injector, turbo, and intake exhaust upgrades and I know guys getting 20+ Apparently certain tunes also do really well but idk anything about them.
What kinda fan boy corn ball buys a 7.3 Powerstroke for fuel economy 😂 I drive my 7.3s for love and tons of horsepower after proper love and thousands and thousands of dollars of engine work ;) 💪 just take them to the junk yard and leave them for the guys like me that live for them .
The 7.3L has no DPF, SCR, no complex emissions systems, nothing. Some had cats, but that isn't a big deal. Basically, as long as it doesn't smoke and isn't modified, it will pass any emissions test.
My 02. 7.3 4 door dually rear wheel drive gets 19.5 empty highway 12.5 loaded and empty combined 3 car hauler local hauling all stock except 6 position that I keep on #5 or 100 extra horsepower add.
I have had 3 7.3s my first was 1992 it got the best mileage an easy 25mph as long as not over 64mph. But my 1999 tubo get average 12mpg i still will buy another one. They are getting harder to find.
I'd say if you take off the topper, cruised at 65mph and used an additive in your fuel/oil. You would be at 20mpg pretty easily. If not a headwind or anything.
@rustyshackleford7265 toppers actually decrease mpg, and tailgates don't really create drag actually. I have seen a few other videos on people experimenting mpg with and without toppers on.
Just got done with a 400 mile trip in a 99 F250 ext cab 2wd w/ 326k. Mostly 60-65 mph driving, mixed with stop and go for a while and some 70-75mph. Managed to get right between 21-23mpg average. Only burned 8 -8.5 gallons of fuel for the 187 miles up there first. I run hotshot EDT at every fill up, I believe it helps these monsters quite a bit.
I rock an 02 7.3 Lariat Crew cab dually 4x4 through the winter months and for hauling. I usually get around 14 with my mostly back road driving. They are less powerful than the modern options for sure but they are dang near bullet proof and will haul well overall. I just love it.
Charlie, While the longevity of the truck and mpg are quite impressive, the same cannot be said for the hideous plume of heinous particulates that follow this pre-DEF Diesel down the road.🤨
electric vehicles through 24 years will be on the dump, batteries pollute earth before their production and after. This vehicle can work many more times
